9. Cross My Way

Seol didn't realize he was being followed since Jungkook kept his distance to not look like some kind of stalker. Seol kept listening to his music as he jogged along the sidewalk, coming to a stop a few minutes later when he saw a slushee stall. It looked so good, and Seol realized that his jog had made him thirsty. He patted his pockets even though he knew vainly that he wouldn't have any money.

"Here. I've got it," said Jungkook from behind Seol.

The sunglasses were still firmly on the other's face as he stood beside Seol at the stall, nodding his head at the menu.

"What flavor are you getting?"

"Um..." Seol was taken aback by the question as he looked up at the menu. "Blue raspberry."

That was the kind he and his father always got when they had spent time together on jogs in the morning before the marriage had started to dissolve. Jungkook nodded as he moved to talk to the man running the stall.

"Two blue raspberries please," said Jungkook as he slipped some money across the counter.

"Thank you," said Seol as Jungkook just nodded at him.

"It's not a problem," said Jungkook, handing Seol one of the blue raspberry slushees when the man handed them over.

As Seol began to lick at his, he noticed that Jungkook wouldn't stop staring at him. It was evident to him even with the sunglasses over his eyes.

"What's your name, kid?" asked Jungkook.

"What's yours?" asked Seol. "Technically, I shouldn't be talking to strangers. My parents taught me that."

"Smart parents."

"Yeah," said Seol with a smile. "So I should listen to them even though you were a kind stranger to buy this for me."

Jungkook turned to make sure there wasn't anyone in the immediate vicinity that would react when he removed the sunglasses. When he deemed it safe, he removed them, tucking them up on the top of his bucket hat.

"My name is Jungkook," he said with a bright smile. He held out his free hand towards the boy. "Now will you tell me your name?"

Seol's mouth fell open. Seol stayed frozen like that for a minute or so. The blue raspberry slushee that he had been eating started to melt out of the paper cone and over his hand.

It was his father. His Dad was staring right at him. Smiling at him. The last time he had seen his father, it had been the backside of him as he left after an argument with his mother. Seol hadn't seen him in months. Seol felt his eyes become glassy as he blinked them quickly to try to banish the tears back through the water ducts they came from. Seol's hand shook a bit as he reached it out and slipped it into Jungkook's to shake it.

"My name is Seol," he said.

"Seol..." mused Jungkook. That had been one of the names he wanted to name his child someday. "What's your last name, Seol?"

Seol hadn't had a problem telling his mother who he was, but there was something to be said about telling his father. He could feel his heart racing in his chest as he moved away from Jungkook a bit to sit down on a nearby bench. Jungkook followed him, sitting down beside him.

"Are you okay?" asked Jungkook. "You look rather pale."

Seol quickly nodded his head, moving to take a bite or two of the rapidly melting slushee in his hands.

"I'm fine. I just...My name - my full name - is Jeon Seol."

Jungkook looked at Seol for a long while after he had admitted his name. He sat there for a moment, studying Seol more closely. Seol could tell; the tips of his ears turning red as he kept nibbling at the blue raspberry slushee. Jungkook had gone and forgotten about his own, only looking back over when he felt the melting blue liquid running over his fingers.

"Jeon Seol..." he muttered to himself as he cleaned his fingers off with a napkin.

"You have questions," said Seol silently when he finished eating, crumpling the paper cone in his hands. "Ask them."

Jungkook looked back at Seol, knowing that his first question might sound a bit insane.

"Are you related to me?"

Seol nodded his head, which caused Jungkook's eyebrows to shoot up.

"How are you related?" Jungkook asked as a follow up question.

Seol crumpled the paper cone into a smaller ball in his hands.

"You sure you want the answer?"

"Why would I ask the question if I didn't want the answer?" asked Jungkook. "Yes. Yes, I want the answer."

"I'm your son," said Seol softly. "From the future."

In his shock, Jungkook dropped the slushee in his hands onto the grass at his feet.

"Repeat that please."

"I'm your son from the future," said Seol a bit louder, turning his head to look at his father's shocked face.

"How old are you?"

"Fourteen."

"Fourteen..." mumbled Jungkook before looking away, shaking his head as he laughed. Seol frowned a bit.

"Why are you laughing?"

"It's just...Jin was just telling me this morning how I was too immature to be a father, and yet here someone is telling me they are my son," said Jungkook. "I'd say Jin or someone else paid you to say that, but I'm the one that followed after you."

"I know it's hard to believe. Mom had a hard time too."

"Mom?"

Jungkook didn't know why his heart did a weird flip in his chest when Seol said that. There should be no part of him that was believing any of this. However, he found himself wanting to know the woman that made up the parts of this boy before him that were unfamiliar. Was it possible there was someone out there that loved him for him, and not for his fame?

"This isn't how you two are supposed to meet though..." mumbled Seol. "I'm already messing things up..."

"Okay...you need to stop and give me a second," said Jungkook, "But you're not messing things up. You're just blowing my mind is all."

Seol just nodded his head again, refusing to make eye contact with Jungkook once more as he instead looked at the grass at his feet.

"Tell me the story from the beginning," said Jungkook before quickly adding, "Please."

"Are you sure you want to hear it?"

"I want to hear every last unbelievable detail," said Jungkook softly.
