7. Butterscotch and Movies

The house that Seol had woken up in had really been the only house he'd ever known. As he sat in the back of his Mom's car after Ava had dropped them back at the school to grab it, he kept wondering what his mom's apartment looked like. This was his Mom before she had met his Dad. What kind of things would he see?

"We're here," said Rai as she cast her glance into the rearview mirror to see that Seol was nodding his head. Ava pulled into a parking space right beside them.

Rai was one of the bottom floor apartments in the complex, and it was lit by a sputtering lamp light that was encrusted with dead flies. It was obvious the landlord didn't take very good care of certain things about the property. As Rai fiddled with her keys in the lock, Seol looked over at Ava standing beside him.

"Auntie Ava?"

"Hmm?"

"I don't suppose. In your purse...do you have a butterscotch?"

It was a very random question, but it still caused a smile to slip across Ava's face as she nodded her head. She rooted around in the bottom of her purse until she found a butterscotch candy, handing it to Seol.

"Thanks!" he said as he began to unwrap it, popping the candy in his mouth.

"My little butterscotch..." cooed Ava, making Rai spin her head around to look at Ava after she had unlocked her apartment door.

"Did you just coo at him?"

Seol chuckled around the butterscotch candy he was sucking on.

"It's fine. She calls me that all the time in the future. Dad's the butter, and I'm the butterscotch."

Rai almost choked on air as Ava's cheeks heated up with a blush. Seol looked back and forth between the two of them. He soon reached to grab one of Rai's hands in his, tugging her towards the apartment door.

"I want to see what your apartment looks like," said Seol. "Come on."

Rai let Seol tug her forward. When the boy was happy, he seemed to be nothing short of an eager puppy dog. Rai entered the apartment with Seol still holding tightly to her hand as she reached out a hand to flick on the light switch by the door. There wasn't much to the interior. There was a tan sofa in the center of the room facing the television by the door. In the back of the wooden planked apartment sat an open floor kitchen with an island. A small hallway shot off to the left of it which led to her bedroom on the right and the bathroom and coat closet across the way.

"It's not much," said Rai, fighting pressure to impress this young boy claiming to be her son, "But it's what I can afford on a monthly basis with the salary I get."

"You don't think you'll get a raise?" asked Ava half joking as she shut the door behind them as she entered last; Rai turning to shoot her a look.

Seol dropped Rai's hand to begin wandering about the apartment. He took in the lack of pictures on the beige walls before wandering over to where her television was, getting down on his knees to look at her DVD collection on the shelf under it.

"Are you looking for something?"

He nodded his head quickly; letting his dark brown eyes scan the titles on the jackets before reaching out his fingers to grab a DVD. Rai couldn't tell which one he was looking at from where she stood, moving to walk over and see what he had picked out.

Back To The Future.

Rai noticed his lips took on a trace of a smile then before he nodded his head towards it. He chewed the butterscotch candy in his mouth, swallowing it before he started to talk.

"This was one of my favorite movies out of the ones you showed me during movie nights with Dad. It was actually what inspired me to look into time travel. Though I'm not old enough to drive, I figured something else could work, and I was even more set on it when your marriage started to fall apart because you...you were madly in love before me. The older I got, the more you seemed to break apart. It was my fault."

"Seol," she said softly as she moved to get down on her knees beside him. The sadness was back in the boy's eyes. She reached out a hand to gently rub his back. "I still...I'm still trying to wrap my head around it all. What you're saying seems nothing short of a dream, but...lets say it's true. Lets say that I do eventually get married to Jungkook and have a remarkable son like you. If our marriage dissolved, I can tell you for a fact that it was never because of you."

"But you don't know that..."

"Yes, I do. Call it a motherly instinct - or in this case - a pre-motherly instinct."

The small smile returned as Seol turned his head to look at Rai. She moved to slip an arm about him in a half hug.

"What's say we put that movie on and have a movie night tonight?"

"Really?!"

She nodded. She hated seeing him sad or scared. If what he said was true...

She wanted to believe it. She really did. It was just hard to believe it since it sounded like a fantasy.

"Can we have popcorn with it?"

"Are you still not full, child?"

Seol chuckled and shook his head, bouncing to his feet. He held a hand down to Rai which she took. She started to move with Seol towards the kitchen, dropping his hand once they reached it to go look for microwave popcorn.

"Seol..."

"Hmmm?"

"How do your father and I meet?"

Seol paused in the entryway to the kitchen. Rai was standing by one of the cupboards in the kitchen, looking over at him.

"I don't think I'm allowed to tell you."

"But you're allowed to tell me you're my son?"

"It's just...what if I tell you and mess things up?"

"I just...it's hard for me to picture ever meeting him, let alone him falling for me."

"Well, it did happen," said Seol, smiling and pointing at himself. "I'm living proof!"

"You're a charmer like him, that's for sure," said Rai with a laugh. "Smooth with your words."

"Smooth like butter..." Seol started to sing, causing Rai to laugh again as Ava entered the kitchen.

"Or in your case, butterscotch," Ava said which got the three of them laughing like a family finally reunited.
