41. Stay

"What did you do?"

The question haunted Jungkook as he laid on his bed in the guest room at Rai's house, staring up at the ceiling. When he had come out of the apartment building that his future self lived in, Jin could tell right off the bat that something had happened. As soon as he had told Jin what had occurred, Jin lit into him. He treated him as if he were some irresponsible child, which perhaps he was. Jungkook knew that it was a risk for him to go back in time to begin with but then to allow his future self to go back to the past? Jungkook was just testing the parameters of time at this point. It's a wonder his whole world wasn't falling apart.

"Maybe it is..." whispered Jungkook to himself as his eyes shifted over the gray tiles.

As he laid there, his mind was turning over and over. Words that he had a hard time vocalizing were swirling about in his mind and lyrically patching themselves together. He sat up in the bed, moving to turn on the bedside lamp. Being a guest room, he knew there probably was nothing in the side table drawer. However, when he tugged it open, a pen came rolling down to greet his eyes; a small pad of paper tucked away inside next to it.

This was definitely the home of a musician and writer. No doubt there.

He grabbed the pad of paper out, beginning to write down what was roaming through his mind. What he had done was reckless. He knew it was for more than one reason, but what he had done he had done for love. He loved Rai. Even if Seol hadn't caused them to meet - even if they met just walking past each other in the street - Jungkook felt like they would have found their way into a romantic relationship with each other.

As he wrote, he heard a cry echo throughout the house. His pen stilled as he listened with bated breath, soon hearing it again. He put the pad of paper and pen aside, automatically going out the door and down the hall. There was no one else in the house aside from him and Rai. Panic started to flood his system as he heard the continued cries, opening the master bedroom door without knocking.

When he entered, it took his eyes a moment to adjust to the darkness. Once they did, he saw Rai lying in the bed on her side and curled up into a ball. She was crying out in her sleep. Jungkook walked towards the bedside table, turning on the light. Tears shone frozen on her cheeks; her face contorted in pain.

"Rai..." he said as he reached out a hand to lay it gently on her arm. "Hey, Rai. Wake up."

Her eyelids slowly fluttered opened, looking over at him. Jungkook could see the pain reflected in the surface of her eyes and swimming beneath the tears threatening to fall. He moved to sit down on the edge of the bed. It hurt him to see her in so much pain. He found himself reaching out a hand to brush his fingers gently through her hair.

"You were having a nightmare. You're okay now..."

"I...I wasn't having a nightmare," she whispered. "I was...I was remembering something."

Jungkook remained silent as she said that, continuing to twirl his fingertips through locks of her hair as he waited for her to continue.

"It was you, but you when you were older...You came to me in the past and promised you wanted to stay...that you didn't want a divorce..."

Jungkook smiled a thin smile. So that was what his future self was doing in the past.

"Does that make you happy?" he asked softly as he watched tears roll down her cheeks as she continued to look at him.

"I just...I...yes...is that selfish?"

He smirked a bit at the question as he shook his head.

"No. I'm glad to hear you'd want me back after the pain I obviously caused you. I know I don't know everything he did since I haven't done it yet - but for what it's worth - I'm sorry."

Jugnkook looked away from her eyes as he looked at the work his fingers were doing. He was only brought back to look at Rai's eyes when she laid a hand softly on his free hand, holding it.

"Jungkook, I'm sorry too."

"We both made mistakes," said Jungkook, "But that just proves we're human. The fact that we are both sorry and want to be together shows we're in love."

She gave him a thin smile as he moved her hand up to his lips, kissing it gently. Jungkook then moved to take his other hand out of her hair, gently wiping away the tears.

"Can you stay?" she asked.

Jungkook knew what she meant by the question, nodding. He dropped his hands away from her, moving to the side of the bed that had been abandoned for so long. Tugging back the covers, he slipped into the empty side of the bed. As he laid on his back to get situated, Rai rolled onto her side to face him.

"Thank you for falling for me," she said softly.

"Thank you for catching me when I fell," said Jungkook with a small grin.

He rolled onto his side to face her, gently brushing his hand down her cheek before leaning forward to press a sweet kiss to her lips. His dazzling smile continued as he pulled back after, snuggling down under the covers on his side. The two of them stared at each other until both of them fell to sleep in the blink of an eye; the dark fading out.
