22. Alternate Plans

Ava knew that bumping into this man would cause what he was holding to go everywhere. What she hadn't seemed to fully realize was how big a mess it would truly make. She could hear the slushy ice clink against the plastic lids as the contents of the soft drinks showered both of them; popcorn coating them like sprinkles. The man that held the food dropped all the bins onto the ground. He had gotten the worst of the soft drink shower as he brought his freed hands up to his face. The liquid was dripping from his bangs, slipping down in small uneven rivulets down his face. Ava was blinking the soft drink out of her own eyes as she lifted her head to look at the man before her as he brought the mask he was wearing down to his chin so he could better mop at his face with his hands.

Holy crap. It was Kim Seokjin.

Ava stood there speechless as Jin blinked his eyes a few times before eventually focusing on the woman in front of him. He just stared at her for a moment before a tiny smirk graced his lips.

"Thanks for the shower."

"Huh?"

"I said thanks for the shower," said Jin with a chuckle before his brows furrowed in concern when he noticed that Ava was just standing there staring. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah. I think I just got some soda in my eye."

"Me too," said Jin still chuckling. "I actually think I have soda in places I never dreamed of it being."

"I'm sorry."

"You're fine," said Jin.

'Definitely fine,' Ava thought as she looked over the soda and popcorn covered man in front of her.

Seol was meanwhile half watching the trailer as Jungkook kept his hand firmly on Seol's wrist so he couldn't move. Seol was starting to panic. This wasn't part of the plan. If their plan really was to work, he had to get Rai and Jungkook by themselves for the movie. Him sitting here like an awkward third wheel would not work.

"I should go see what is taking uncle so long," whispered Seol as he leaned over towards Jungkook.

"No. He's fine," Jungkook whispered back without taking his eyes off the trailer on the screen.

"But I'll be really quick..."

Jungkook turned then to look at Seol in the dark, and even though Seol couldn't fully see his face, he knew he was getting 'the look'. Seol could spot that anywhere. Both of his parents had fixed him with that several times in the future, and it never failed to make him shrink in his seat. He did so now as Jungkook gave him 'the look', sinking down a bit in his theater chair. The grip that Jungkook had on his arm wasn't tight, but it didn't loosen at all.

"Trust me," said Seol as he tried to squirm free, shifting to sit himself back up. "I'll be right back. He could be struggling with carrying everything..."

"Fine," said Jungkook with an eventual sigh, releasing his hold on Seol's arm, "But you have two minutes. I'll be timing you."

Seol didn't bother to say anything else as he quickly scampered up out of his seat and up the aisle. In his rush, he almost ended up tripping up the aisle. Seol pushed out through the theater door, and saw that Ava and Jin were staring at each other in the hallway. Jin had taken some napkins that he had crammed into his hoodie pocket out, trying to pry the wad of wet napkins apart in a vain search for a dry one.

"I'd offer you a dry napkin for your face," said Jin to Ava as he tried to pull the wet ball of napkins apart, "But those are in short supply."

"Are you two okay?" asked Seol as he walked over to them, noticing the mess everywhere.

"We're fine," said Ava as she looked at Seol. "Next time give me more of a warning, Seol, and I will be able to come up with a better plan."

"Wait. You two know each other?" asked Jin.

"Yes," said Ava as she turned to look back at Jin. "He's my little butterscotch."

"Butterscotch?" asked Jin with a chuckle before he tried putting two-and-two together. "Wait...are you his mother?"

"No!...I mean, I'm flattered you think that, but..."

Jin chuckled.

"I get it..." he said as he looked at her and Seol who was chuckling.

"My Mom is in the theater with Dad," said Seol. "Auntie Ava and I were trying to parent trap them."

"Oh! Clever!" said Jin.

"That's why Auntie Ava ran into you. To try to stall you. You weren't part of the plan."

"Ouch," said Jin with a small grin. "Well, I suppose my plans are changing now too. I am going to go assess the damage in the bathroom."

"I'll go with you," piped up Seol, moving to follow after Jin before noticing that Ava had bent down to start picking up the mess. Upon seeing that, Seol immediately turned to go help. Jin paused before coming to do the same.

"Here," said Jin as he bent down to pick up one of the popcorn bins. "We can scrap the popcorn into here."

Ava nodded as she started to toss pieces of the popcorn back at the bin. As she did, there was a couple of times that her finger tips touched Jin's. Every time it did, it felt like there were small touches of static electricity present there. She retracted her hand as if stung, rising to her feet as she moved to throw the trash in her hands away.

"There. It's clean now. Thank you both. I'm going to go assess the damage myself. I'm sure I'll meet you both back out here in a moment."

Jin nodded. His face was passive; his eyes studying Ava for a moment. Ava wondered if it was possible that he felt whatever that feeling was between them too. Instead of answering, he moved towards the men's room with Seol in tow.

Even though the movie had started, Jungkook had a hard time paying attention to it because his mind was fixated on Seol. Jungkook knew Seol was up to something, and it was bugging him that he hadn't yet been able to figure it out. Jungkook was brought out of his thoughts when he heard a small sigh from the woman sitting on his left, turning to look at her as her phone screen momentarily lit up her face as she checked the time.

"Rai?"

Rai froze with her face lit by the screen, turning her head sideways with wide eyes.

"You..."

Jungkook appreciated Rai not saying his name out loud and causing a commotion in the theater. The two of them just stared at each other in shock for a moment, but it didn't take either of them long to figure out how they got where they were.

"I'm going to have a word with him when I see him again..." whispered Jungkook, "Because something tells me he won't be back for a while."

"Same thing with Ava," said Rai. "The two of them will get an earful."

Ava and Seol. The two of them were a bad combination. Awkwardness settled between them again as they both slowly turned their gaze away from one another towards the screen where the movie had just started to play. Neither of them were watching it; each lost in their own thoughts about what was going on. Jungkook knew that this awkwardness would have to break between them eventually. They had a supposed son together. He turned his head to the side to look at her. Someone had to take the first step.

"Hey..." said Jungkook as he leaned over to whisper in her ear. "Wanna play a trick on them to get revenge?"

Rai turned her eyes away from the screen. Though it was dark, she could still see an impish gleam in Jungkook's eyes; a smile behind his mask.

"What did you have in mind?" she asked with a whisper; a small grin of her own crossing her face.

Jin stood in a stall in the men's bathroom at the theater. He had his hoodie draped over the door, looking down at himself to see that the white t-shirt he had on was as equally soaked through. Who knew soft drinks could pack such a punch? Seol stood outside the stall, leaning against the sink as he waited for Jin to come back out.

"Seol, are you still out there?"

"Yes," he answered.

"You and Ava..."

"Like I said, she's my Auntie. She's my mother's best friend."

"Yes, but...you two really came up with this plan to get your parents to the movies and then leave them so they could connect?"

"Cliche, I know, but it works in the movies."

"And I got in the way of your plan so I got bathed in concessions?"

"I just...I didn't know you were coming along. I'm sorry she did that."

"Sorry? Are you kidding me? Sure it's not fun to be covered in sweets, but it's funny," said Jin. "I'm just not sure what to wear."

As Jin said that, Seol watched as Jin moved to open the bathroom stall clothed in his see through white t-shirt. The soda was causing his t-shirt to stick to his chest and make his hair a matted mess. He draped the dripping wet hoodie over his arm as Seol looked at him and chuckled.

"What are you laughing at?" asked Jin.

"You look like you got into a fight with a concession stand and lost."

Jin rolled his eyes.

"There's the inner Jungkook in you," said Jin as he listened to Seol's infectious laughter echo out throughout the bathroom.

"Maybe we can get a change of clothes nearby," suggested Seol. "Leave Mom and Dad to enjoy the movie together and go to a diner or something. Just us and Ava."

"Ava," said Jin as he stood in front of one of the mirrors above the sink, looking at his messed up reflection. A smirk danced across his lips when he thought about her.

Jin knew this was shaping up to be an interesting evening.
