11. Awkward

An awkward pause filled the air between the two of them as Rai stared at Jungkook standing in her kitchen entryway. The Jeon Jungkook. She looked past Jungkook's shoulder into the other room to see Seol standing there. The resemblance between the two really was uncanny when they stood so close. Seol had a hopeful grin on his face as he looked at her. Rai reached out a hand behind her to grip the counter tightly. She could feel the cool slippery surface under her touch so she knew she wasn't dreaming. There was only one way for her to confirm this for sure.

"AVA!"

Jungkook rose his brows when Rai screamed Ava's name. From the bedroom where she still laid trying to get some sleep, Ava groaned and rolled out of bed. She reached up a hand to brush a strand or two of hair behind her ear as she slipped out of the bedroom and down the hall. As she walked, Ava rubbed the sleep out of her eyes.

"What is it this time? Did you find another note from Seol that..."

When Ava stopped rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she paused to see who had turned their head to look at her from the kitchen entryway. He was wearing a sweatsuit and his sweaty hair was a tossled mess on the top of his head. An adorable grin took over his face as Ava just stared at Jungkook with her mouth wide open.

"You're...I'm..."

Ava immediately turned after being unable to complete a sentence, slipping into the nearby bathroom and shutting the door. Jungkook couldn't help but to chuckle a little as he looked at Seol.

"I take it that's Auntie Ava?"

"Yep."

"You've talked to Seol?" asked Rai, realizing how dumb the question was when it left her mouth.

"Yes. I met him on my jog," said Jungkook as he turned back to look at Rai. "He told me everything."

"He did?"

Jungkook nodded, sighing as he stood there. Neither of them said anything else about Seol. Instead Jungkook changed the subject and nodded his head at the egg mixture that Rai had poured in the pan.

"Can I help with the eggs?"

Rai nodded her head. She was still in shock as she tried to process the fact that her idol was standing in front of her dressed so casually and now asking if he could help make breakfast. Jungkook smiled softly as he entered the kitchen, moving to stand beside her at the stove. He was so close to her now. Rai could feel the material of their sleeves brush against each other. He smelled so musky and yet sweet. It was odd to her, and Rai couldn't place why he smelled that way, but she didn't care.

"Tell me what to do," said Jungkook, "Or at least what I can do to be helpful."

As Rai snapped out of her shock to tell Jungkook how he could help with breakfast, Seol stayed where he was. He had a clear view of the backs of the two of them as they talked nervously and softly with one another. The heavy feeling that he had felt in his heart started to subside a bit. Maybe there was hope. Maybe they could be a happy family after all. Seol turned when he heard the bathroom door open. Ava had washed up and was rushing towards Rai's room in her PJs to try to find clothes to put on. Seol watched Ava disappear into Rai's room before emerging a few minutes later fully dressed. She walked towards the kitchen, pausing near Seol.

"You could have given me a warning."

"Mom is the one who yelled. Not me."

"I suppose. She and I will have to talk about that later."

Ava turned to look at Jungkook and Rai standing near each other by the stove. She couldn't believe it was real.

The four of them sat at the kitchen table after, each with a plate of scrambled eggs in front of them. Jungkook and Seol were both eating them while Rai shuffled them around with her fork. Ava was leaving hers completely untouched as she looked at Jungkook, trying to not make it overly obvious that she was staring at the man. Jungkook could tell he was being stared at though. He lifted his head to look over at her, swallowing the forkful in his mouth.

"Can I...um...help you?"

Ava's cheeks flushed when Jungkook addressed her staring.

"I just...I feel like I'm still asleep. It just doesn't seem possible that you're sitting right there."

Jungkook shifted a bit awkwardly in his seat at her words as he looked over at Seol.

"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him," said Jungkook nodding his head Seol's way.

All three of the adults at the table looked at Seol.

"Do you believe him?" asked Ava.

Jungkook paused as he looked from Ava to Seol and then over to Rai who sat beside him. Rai flicked her gaze from her a plate over to Jungkook. When she could see that he was studying her, her cheeks heated up with a blush and she sank a bit in her seat like a student trying to slip away from a test.

"It seems crazy, but a part of me does," said Jungkook. "I'd like to have a paternity test done."

"As I told mom - if that's what it takes to get you both to fully believe me - then I'll do it," said Seol.

"I think we can get one at a pharmacy," said Ava.

"We could do it today. I didn't have any plans...well, I mean I did." It was then that Jungkook seemed to remember that he had rehearsal later. "Shoot! What time is it?"

Rai swiveled to look at the time displayed on the microwave.

"It's almost eleven."

"I've gotta go," said Jungkook as he stood up, slipping the last of the eggs into his mouth, "But I'll be back."

He looked about him, moving to grab up a pen and a piece of paper that lay on the nearby cupboard. The paper was some sort of sales advertisement that Rai had gotten in the mail the other day and had yet to throw away.

"Rehearsals shouldn't last that long. Probably a few hours. I left you my number if you need to call me before then," said Jungkook. "I can bring supper by tonight if you can get the kit while I'm gone."

Rai just nodded her head. Ava glared at Rai from across the table as she mouthed, 'Get up and say goodbye'.

Rai rose from her seat as she followed Jungkook to the front door, watching as he grabbed up the bucket hat and sunglasses that he had left on the table near it.

"Thank you for coming," Rai said softly as Jungkook turned to look at her.

"Thanks for letting me stay for a minute," said Jungkook.

There was an awkward silence that filled the air between them as the sound of Seol and Ava chatting away in the kitchen started so it seemed like neither of them were listening in when it was obvious they were.

"They aren't very sneaky are they?" asked Jungkook as he tried to break the silence.

"No. Not at all," said Rai with a small laugh.

Jungkook chuckled a minute as he moved to open the door, turning back to look at Rai once more.

"I don't think I caught your name at all."

"My name is Rai," she said.

"Rai," Jungkook repeated, finding himself wanting to commit that name to memory. "It's a pretty name."

Rai's cheeks heated up again; this time the tips of her ears turning red. Jungkook smiled.

"I'll see you in a bit," he said.

"See you in a bit," said Rai.

Rai stood in the doorway, watching as Jungkook ran back off to whatever wonderful fantasy he had slipped out of.
