27- Desperation
Weeks have passed after we visited Naeun, and now it was nearing July.
Things have changed between Jin's older brother and I, and we put the past in the past and have moved on. We were on a level of friends now, which Jin was happy about.
I was laying my head on my mom's lap, listening to Star King that was on the T.V while she was brushing though my long hair, cracking up occasionally as she watched the show.
"Omma, when is dad coming home tonight?" I asked her.
"Around eight o'clock tonight. He told me he'll be coming home early," She says and sighed.
"I still can't believe dad got a job offer at Samsung," I say, and smiled.
"I can't believe it either, and at his age too," My mother said with a scoff.
"Dad is a strong man, and is very good looking still, so his age doesn't matter."
I argued, and she broke out in laughter.
"He needs to hear you say that to him. You can be his little motivation so he could get you bungeoppangs." She says with a sigh.
"Talking about bungeoppangs... I haven't had those in a while." I say, and started to crave those fish shaped ice cream sandwiches with vanilla and red bean paste in the inside.
"If he get's a promotion soon, then you'll have them everyday if you want too," My mother says. "But mostly he needs to find the money to pay for your eye surgery soon."
"Omma... even he doesn't... it's alright. Fortune doesn't always come, and I've already accepted that." I say, but my mother disagreed.
"I wish we would be living in the U.S where we would make more money than we do here," She said with a scoff, and I became quiet.
After a quiet moment between us, my stomach began to grumble.
"Omma... I'm hungry." I say, and she sighed.
"Let's get something to eat then,"
She says, and I began to sit up, and followed her towards the kitchen.
While I sat at the kitchen table, waiting for the food my mom began to spark up conversation with me.
"So... how are things going on with Jin?" She asked curiously.
"He's fine. He told me the other day that he has to go help his dad with his work or something, so he hasn't been home that often."
"Ah... his father. I heard he was a very strict and careful man," My mom says and sighed.
"Jin never spoke with me much about his dad before," I say, leaning my head on my hand.
"It's because their relationship hasn't been good." She says.
"How'd you know?" I asked her.
"His mother told me all about it," She says, and I smiled.
"So are you guys best of friends now?" I asked her, and she laughed.
"Yah... are you really happy? I know what you're thinking," She says, and I giggled.
The thought of my mother and his mother being best friends made me really happy, and I started to imagine about what the future might be, if Jin and I married.
"Are you daydreaming?" My mother asked me, and I snapped out of it.
"A-aniyo." I answered her at once, and she chuckled.
"Ha, I caught you. You're fortunate that I've approved of Jin, or else this would be very diffrent if you dated a bad boy," She says with a laugh, but stopped right after. "I'm serious."
"I know, omma, I know." I just say, waving my hand in the air.
We began to eat soon after, and decided on a little shopping spree together.
Our relationship has grown better, into a more bonding relationship than ever before, and I was glad because of that.
"Feel this," My mother said, taking my hand and placing it on a fabric that was super cool and stretchy to the touch. "Guess what material this is?"
"Polyester fabric," I say, and she chuckled.
"Good. I'm getting you this shirt for you to wear during summer, since it's super cool." She says.
"What does it look like?" I asked her.
"It's a light blue T-Shirt with a little cactus on the side pocket." She answered me. "Do you want this or the summer dress? You can only get one though, since I can't afford to buy you another one,"
"I'll get the shirt, since I already have a summer dress," I said quietly, feeling a bit disappointed, but that went away quickly when she bought me the shirt.
My mother mostly window shopped, but that was alright since we both were having a great time together being out and about, and that's all that matters.
When my mother opened the front door when we came home, I heard her greet my dad.
"Aigoo, were my girls going out shopping?" My dad says, and I laughed and opened my arms and hugged him tightly.
"Yeh, we had a really great time," I said.
"What did you get?" He says, and I gave him the bag with my shirt inside.
"Wow, this shirt is very pretty. This is your favorite color," He says, checking out the shirt. "Oh? Is that all you got?"
"Um," I started to say, but my mom cut me off.
"That's what I could afford," She says sternly, and he sighed.
"Well, is that the case?" He says. "Well... I don't think you should say that anymore."
"What? What do you mean?" My mother asked him.
"It means... I got a promotion!" He says happily.
"What?! Aniyo, you're lying-"
"I'm not! Look, I even have the paper from the company-"
I heard the paper get snatched away from my dad's hands, and my mom began to read it. While she was reading it, my dad turned his attention on me.
"I guess throwing the penny in the water fountain on the way to work was finally a use," He says with a laugh, and then suddenly, my mother gasped.
"Honey... you didn't just get promoted..." She started to say. "But you're going to transfer to the states?!"
"Yeah, that again is right too. The company offered a promotion for me, if I wished to move to the states, and in our situation, I chose to go. Meaning if I go, there's no way I would leave my favorite two girls back here in Korea. You both are coming along with me."
"Well good. I wasn't going to handle staying here if I can't make any good money here," My mother said, and grabbed her phone. "I'll be calling my cousin who is living in the states right now."
My father chuckled, and sighed. "Ah... what fortune has brought to our family..."
I was still in the process of soaking in what information was being said.
"Sumin? Aren't you happy about it?" He asked me.
I started to back away, unable to accept what was going on.
"Sumin?"
"I... I need to go." I say, and turned around and began to walk towards the front door.
"Sumin! Where are you going?!" He called after me, but I was too shocked and emotional to care as I opened the front door, and began to run outside.
It was almost an instinct where I was heading too, and it was the only goal I had in mind as I ran.
I had to get to Jin.
Oh dear :(
Sumin's dad just got promoted, and got a job transfer to move to the states... and the whole family has to move with him too. Even though it's good news... it's bad news at the same time.
