1- Crosswalk

Date: |4-24-2009|

"It is.6:30 A.M. It is.6:30 A.M. It is 6:30-"

I reached over and pressed the middle button to turn my alarm clock off, and began to sit up in bed. It was like every morning, except today was my first time back to school... blind.

I did the usual for the past 3 months,
feeling my way around using my hands,
scent, and memory.

I was still slow on things of course, like dropping my toothbrush on the ground and taking fifteen minutes trying to find it when it actually fell on the counter.

Dressing was a pain too, but luckily wearing the uniform was easy to identify since I could feel the cold metal of the name tag that was pinned just above the chest on the right.

This year, mine was special since it was engraved into the metal.

My mom and dad wanted to be careful with me, so they rather dropped me off at school then let me walk to school, like I normally did before the accident happened and everything.

As I sat in the backseat, I gripped tightly onto the door handle, squeezing it constantly every time I felt a bump or a sharp turn as the car was moving.

The memories were still fresh in my head, and I couldn't help to be nervous in normal car rides now.

When we arrived to the school, my parents walked me in inside the school office, where I met my teacher that I was now in a special class for the vision impaired, separate from the other students.

Although sadness did loom over me when I heard I was the only blind kid in the whole school, I rethought about it and realized I was pretty special... in a way.

My parents hugged me goodbye, telling me to have fun in class and things like that to encourage me... but what fun could I have when I was the only one by myself in a classroom with just a teacher?

It wasn't that exciting, but at least they did encourage me and I was grateful for them.

My new teacher, who was called Miss.Park offered her arm as she guided me to the classroom. She began talking to me, telling me that her class was just like the other students but just special.

As we walked, I was silent the whole time as I listened to her speak, yet I was also looking down on the ground. Although I was blind, I wasn't completely blind. Everything was just... really blurry.

"So between the two of us, you can just call me by my first name, Yujin." She says with a giggle.

"Miss.Park... why do you like teaching blind students?"

That question caught of guard and I could tell by the way she started to chuckle nervously.

"Well, I enjoy teaching first of all but the main thing is... my mother was born blind. I guess I got the inspiration and patience to become a teacher for the visually impaired."

"Your mother was born blind? Then how..." I trailed off, seeing how I asked her that in a disrespectful way and began to hope that she wasn't those type of teachers who were easily sensitive.

She surprised me by laughing. "You wanted to ask how she met my dad? It's alright though, alot of people wanted to know too. My dad wasn't blind, but he married her because he really loved her."

"Your dad must be really kind,"

I say, and she chuckled softly, and I could imagine her smiling to herself as she did.

"Yes... yes he is."

After getting to the classroom, which she told me it was more like a small room between two other classrooms in between, I began to get ready for the first lesson that I will be having with her.

Reading in braille.

Although I did practice reading the alphabet in braille, I still had some trouble with them.

I knew what the alphabet is and I knew how to read and write... but now since I was blind... I have to learn it all over again. I honestly felt really stupid learning my ABC's but only in braille again.

But... it was a start of my new life I guess.

But having Miss.Park, or Miss. Yujin or how she wants me to call her, I felt more reassured that I had someone to help me out with all of this, and I began to appreciate her as my teacher more.

And everyday after that, the sadness I once felt was gone as I grew closer to Miss.Yujin.

After going to school like this for a few weeks, my parents began to let me go out more, which I got a walking cane for. I practiced with it a whole bunch of times, until I grew confident with myself.

Walking to school seemed like it was a big problem, but now using my walking cane often, my parents started to trust me more, so that I can walk to school like I once did before.

I took in a breath, as I took out my foldable cane from my backpack and straightened it out until I felt the end touch the ground, and began to tap it on the ground as I started to walk away from my house.

Just like the many times before, but now without my parents help, I was walking alone on the sidewalk, using my memory as the way to lead me, and my walking stick to help me find my way.

The school was only a walking distance of ten minutes, and I only need to cross the street once to get to school, which was a busy walkway for students anyways, so I knew I was safe.

The sound of cars rushed past me brought me back to reality, and I smelled the smell of faint gasoline as it was in the air, and that's when I knew I stopped just in front of a walkway.

I reached forward, and felt for the pole and pressed the button so that the cars would stop so that us pedestrians could cross the road. I then stepped back, and waited so I could hear it start to beep.

While I waited, I heard someone walking up from behind me and then stopped just beside me, merely what I would think a safe distance away from me.

There was a faint smell of cologne, and it smelled really good so I could tell it was a guy.

If a guy was heading this early in the morning to the direction where the school was, then he must be a student or a teacher heading the same way.

I started to imagine what he could look like in my head, particularly thinking of how he could be hot and I didn't even know it... but it could also be the opposite way too.

"Go!"

I heard, and the signal started to beep in a countdown from across the street, and I started to walk forward.

Just when I was in the middle of the street, I heard the sound of a car screeching, just before it hit something and there was a loud noise that followed to my left.

I stopped immediately, and I started to have a flashback of the accident again.

"Sumin! Sumin! Answer me!"

She yelled, the desperation was clear in her tone, and I looked up at her, seeing the panic in her eyes.

"Thank god," She says breathlessly, and smiled at me as she reached over and touched my cheek as she smiled a little."I thought you were a goner as I felt the impact more on your side-"

There were bright lights on the front side of the main window, and I turned my head over to look, but it was already too late.

"Ah!" I gasped, and held my hand onto my chest as panic rushed though me.

The signal beeped on while I was still standing there.

4...5...6

"Hey, are you okay?"

6...7...8

"Hey!"

9...

All of a sudden, I felt a strong grip on my arm as I was being pulled back, making me instantly let go of my walking stick, and into someone's arms.
