5. And then everyone clapped
After a thrilling day of denying her disappearance, Baby Olympus was picked up by her trembling mother to go to the police department. Gripping her steering wheel, she drove down the small roads between the houses, getting deeper into the city, where the buildings were essentially cubes of plaster with peeling paint. She parked in front of a cube with a sign with broken neons that said "POLICE DEPARTMENT".
The budget for the police department had never been really high, for the simple reason that it wasn't needed in Winter Oaks. Nobody really did anything bad here, for the simple reason that except for really old folk and a handful of teenagers, they weren't many people that actually spent time in Winter Oaks. Everyone spent their weekends and nights at Greendale, the neighboring city. Over there were some nice bars and restaurants, a cinema, and lots of other nice places.
Morgana turned towards her daughter. She hadn't spoken once during the ten minute drive. She'd faced the landscape the whole time, as if she hadn't seen it for a long while. But she didn't comment anything.
" Sweetie, we're here."
At first, she thought her daughter wouldn't answer. She knew she was probably still a little traumatized... Whatever had happened during that summer probably scarred her deep, hidden being past memories like a bandaid.
" I know."
Morgana got out of the car, closing her car-door behind her. The fresh summery air was like a slap in the face. She glanced over her shoulder, watching as Babylon got out of the car, holding herself with her frail arms. One thing had changed since two months ago. She'd lost a little weight, which was something only a mother could notice.
It was time to enter the police department. Morgana had been there many times during this past summer. She remembered all too well pleading to the officers for them to finally issue a warrant, to finally believe her daughter wasn't simply being "rowdy" and "rebellious". She remembered being interrogated many times, being called back everytime there was a possible lead they hadn't tried, she remembered crying in the arms of Marie Gladys and watching Chief Potter stress-eat donuts whilst she screamed at them to do their jobs and find her daughter.
Now, she entered the small building with her daughter at her side. But it didn't feel any more reassuring.
The main room was a sort of secretary bureau where officers awaited for civilians to ask them stuff or for them to receive calls, which barely happened. Most crimes were outside of the Winter Oaks periphery and arrived under the Greendale supervision. A man was currently behind the desk, brushing back his milky curls and whistling to the tune of a cartoon theme.
" Officer, we're here to see the Detectives."
The man nearly jumped to the ceiling. He had been clearly distracted and hadn't seen the two ghost like women enter the P.D.
" All... All the detectives?"
" Well, aren't they simply Detective Gladys and Detective Simon?"
" Yes."
" Than yes, all the detectives. I'm Miss Olympus. I have an appointment."
His eyes widened and he seemed to finally realize who were the two women in front of him.
" Oh. Oh... Oh! Yes of course."
He pressed a button and something buzzed. Seconds later, a door opened on a freshened up Marie Gladys and Brad Simon. They walked like true detectives to them, Simon offering a rigid hand to Morgana and Gladys gently shaking Babylon's hand. Morgana tried ignoring the déjà-vu that was torturing her mind, but it wasn't easy.
" Thank you for coming, Babylon. I know you didn't really want to."
" I came because I want to see video proof of the fact I wasn't there this summer. Anything."
Her tone clearly showed she wouldn't comply if she didn't get her way.
" Fair enough. Coming right up. Brad, go get the laptop and bring it to my desk. We're not gonna go in the interrogation room, Babylon isn't a criminal."
Simon rolled his eyes and turned on his heels, heading back outside the room.
" Now that that's done, let's go at my office. It's over there."
She pointed towards the doors they'd come from.
" Follow me."
The corridors leading to her office were as bland as architecturally possible. Beige, white, yellow, it looked like the place hadn't been repainted since the late nineties. Babylon gazed at her feet whilst she followed. She didn't want to be here. She just wanted to understand the weirdness she felt. The fact that everything around her was so... Different. She didn't want to believe the fact she'd actually gone missing, but it would explain a few plot holes in her memory.
They entered a long room filled with cubicles. They walked straight passed that and went at the back, where a door was shut. A panel stated " DETECTIVE GLADYS AND HER PARTNER SIMON". Marie opened the door, gesturing towards the women to enter, which they did, awkwardly. Marie went to sit behind her desk. She turned on a lamp, one a bit like the PIXAR lamp, and sorted a couple of papers that crowded her desk.
" Okay. We need to wait till that idiot brings the vid— Oh! You're finally here, Simon!"
Brad Simon mumbled vulgar words and almost threw the laptop with the surveillance video and other clips on the desk.
" You ready?"
" Ready to see if I actually went missing? Totally..."
Marie turned on the computer. She typed in a password— seven clicks, not a very secure one, Babylon thought— and then scrolled a little while. She clicked on a video marked July 12th of that year.
She turned the laptop so that the screen was facing Babylon, and pressed play with her index. The screen lit up and a faint hum was audible. It was coming from the camera. We saw from a weird angle ( it was a surveillance camera after all) posters being put up on walls and windows with Babylon's face on them, saying IF YOU SEE THIS GIRL PLEASE CALL THIS NUMBER. Then the video skipped to July fourteenth where some teen hooligans were taking the posters off from the walls. The video then moved on. It was a different file. On the screen, a redhead was speaking in a microphone in front of the Olympus house. She was speaking about the "mysterious vanishing of a young teenager in a small Idaho town. No trace left whatsoever, no leads. If you see her, please call...". Then, a picture of her was issued on the screen. It was one of her and her friends, her friends' faces were blurred out. She was smiling on the picture. She looked dashing. Another video started. It was the mayor speaking in front of the town, on August 27th. They were saying that they would hold a ceremony for Babylon on September 3rd if she wasn't found by then, because if no one knew where she was they were chances nobody would never know. Apparently the leads were none existent.
A new video was about to start, but Babylon closed the laptop. She let out a long sigh, and wiped away a stray tear.
" I... I don't want to see any more. I... I want to head home, if that's all right."
" But we didn't even interrogate—"
" She's a kid, Brad. Let her go home. Of course you can go, sweetie."
