I Guess Deceit Starts Young
Azure's POV
I walked through the library with George, Lance, Bow, Adora and Glimmer, I lagged as much as possible behind the others. I felt like an idiot, why did I ever let myself think that a creature like me would ever make it work with Bow. If he liked me the way I was, then he would not have felt the need to lie about me to his guardians.
"This is the thousand-year-old, Colonia pitcher. And this tablet dates back two millennia." Lance said, introducing us to a couple priceless artifacts. He moved away from the artifacts and walked over to a wardrobe. "And this is where Bow played pretend as a little boy." He opened a curtain at the bottom, and we stared into the little space. It was decorated with lavender fairy lights, animal pillows and various other objects.
"Let me guess, playing pirates?" Glimmer smiled to herself, and I awed, giving Bow a playful nudge, trying to be lighthearted.
"Oh, no. Bow doesn't like pirates. Playing historian, getting ready to take over the library even then. Right, Bow?" Lance smiled at the memory.
"Right." Bow mumbled halfheartedly.
"I guess the deceit starts young." I mumbled and Adora nodded. The curtain was closed, and We unbent our backs.
"Mr. Bow's dad- sir, as First Ones historians, do you know anything about the lore of She-Ra?" I winced at the way Adora said Historians and waited for someone to realize the mistake.
"Ah... Great question. Accurate translations are hard to come by, but we think the name was actually, Her-Ra." I could hear Adora snort.
"Well, that's not right." She smirked, and Bow interjected quickly.
"But you don't know that for sure, Adora." Bow chuckled. That was right; here, Adora was just Adora, not She-Ra.
"She would fight for the power of Grey skull." Adora looked annoyed.
"It's 'for the honor of Grey skull.'" She corrected.
"And rode on a Dragon. Lance said, stepping aside, and showing off a vase, with She-Ra sporting a massive dragon as a steed.
Adora gasped. "Wait she got a Dragon? I wish I had a-" Bow quickly threw his hands around Adora's mouth and pulled her away, laughing in a strange way.
"Anyway, where was I?" Lance asked, looking up at the ceiling.
"Princess nonsense." George scoffed, and grabbed onto a tassel, hanging next to a curtain in the wall. The curtain swung open. I gaped at a glittering piece of crystal.
"The rune stone shard. It is the oldest First Ones object in our collection. But enough about us, Tell us about your studies, Adora, Glimmer, Azure."
I felt everyone instantly get nervous again, and Glimmer spoke. "Uh, you know, the physics are good."
Adora nodded. "The history is also good." Before I could open my mouth, Lance spoke again.
"Uh... I thought you are an art major." He said, and Bow cut in front before Adora could muck up further.
"Uh, she's a double major. Girl can smash bots, and survive the Northern reach in shorts, but she cannot remember her fake major?
"Uh, yes." Adora agreed quickly. "History, art, art history, that's thee. I am a triple major. I also teach unless that's not a thing students' do." Adora blabbered on.
George started to converse with Glimmer, and I stayed away, looking at the books, smelling the pages. I did not feel connected here like I thought I would. It felt like so many people were leaving. I closed my eyes, thinking about Faust. Would he want to stay in Bright Moon? Would he leave? And if he did leave, would I? I looked back at Glimmer, Adora and Bow. I won't lie, right about now I wanted too.
"So, for school, heh, we got this first Ones puzzle to solve. The last word is giving us trouble. Have you ever heard of Serenia?" Bow asked, and I turned, as Lance squeaked.
"Oh!"
I watched as a pile of scrolls were dumped onto the small table. "Serenia was the name of a mythical First Ones hero. Although some of us think she was a real person." George hinted in Lance's direction.
"And some of us also think the Elberon vase only dates back one millennium." Bow watched the brothers in law uncomfortably.
"Is this everything you have on Serenia?" Bow asked, and Lance chuckled.
"Oh, no. I am so sorry, heh." He chuckled. "Everything from the first floor, there is lots more on the second." Lots of books.
"This is going to take hours." Glimmer groaned.
"Hours, days, maybe weeks! And if you are lucky, it might take you a whole lifetime." Lance sighed, and Adora put a scroll back in the pile.
"Well, this one's just about aqueducts, so, it's mislabeled." Adora said calmly, and I jerked backward as Lance and George's heartbeats sped up.
"Wait, you can read First Ones writing?" Lance asked loudly, excitement lacing their every word.
"Uh, I also study linguistics. I-It's a fifth major, or a fourth major, I am losing count." Adora fumbled, and I winced.
"Adora I study wolf runes and it's not major, just a class." I said through my teeth which were growing sharper by the second.
"What does this say?" George said, yanking up his sleeve. I saw the First Ones writing tattooed onto the back of his forearm.
"Uh, it says 'Lunch.'" Adora read. Lance started laughing, as George fumbled.
"Oh, I thought it said love." He mumbled to himself.
"You thought it said-" Lance could not even finish teasing George he was laughing so hard. Lance got up, still laughing with his arms around his ribs. "I like this girl!"
George stood up and pulled down his sleeve. "Actually, there's one more debate you can settle for us, Adora." Lance said, and they lead her away from us.
"I don't know. Maybe I should help with the, uh, school project." Lance stood in front of her, eyes pleading. "But I guess it couldn't hurt." She mumbled. Lance grinned.
"Great! Onward, best research squad." Lance said dramatically.
I breathed a sigh and picked up a scroll. "Shall we then?" I asked to myself, and opened the scroll...
