"Hey."
He leaned back on his chair to speak to me. Grinning, he said,"Are you a magnet?"
I stared at him.
"Cause I'm attracted to you."
"What."
I went back to my work. He pouted, looking a little disappointed.
__
A few minutes later, he turned his chair around and faced me again. This time, he said,"I think there's something wrong with my phone..."
"I'm not a technician or anything."
"Cause your number isn't on it."
I ignored him.
When I didn't say anything, he frowned and faced the front.
__
"Hey-" He started, but was quickly interrupted by the teacher.
"Filip. Pay attention."
"Sorry, miss."
But of course, a second later, once the teacher's back was turned, he whispered to me,"Um, are you mad?"
I replied furiously,"I swear, if this is another pick-up line I-"
"No, it's not. Are you mad at me, because if I'm making you uncomfortable or anything, I'll stop."
He said it very sincerely.
"No, don't worry." I said.
__
After that, I'd see him everywhere. I realized I had passed him many times in the hallway without paying attention to him. I realized his locker was only a few lockers away from mine. I realized he had English class with me too. I'd just never noticed him.
"Hey, do you want to be my partner for this activity?" He asked one day, in English class. I didn't mind.
As he wrote his essay, I noticed a mistake. "Dude, 'your' and 'you're' is not the same thing. Respect the apostrophe," I said.
"You're right," He replied, erasing the word,"Because you're mine and I'm yours."
"..."
I got up, grabbed my essay, and went over to my friend Kathleen. "Kath, wanna be my partner?"
__
The next day, I went to school, like usual. I opened my locker door- and I saw a pink post-it taped inside. It read: 'Sorry I made you uncomfortable. I didnt mean it, it was a joke.'
As I sat down next to him in English class, I told him,"Where's the apostrophe in 'didn't?' I told you to respect it, didn't I?"
He stared at me, before hesitantly saying,"I don't understand you."
"You shouldn't."
"Like, do you like my pick-up lines or not?"
"It's not working, that's all."
The look on his face was hilarious.
__
Later, he passed me a note.
'Can I tell you a secret?'
In response, I wrote: 'Maybe.'
He replied with: 'That's fine. I'd never keep any secrets from you anyway. I couldn't, even if I wanted.'
I waited until the teacher passed, then I wrote: 'Can I tell you a secret then?'
I watched as his pen hovered the piece of paper, hesitating on what to respond with. Eventually, he scrawled something on the paper, then gave it to me. It read: 'If you're willing to share, yeah."
I wrote my secret down, my neat, bright pink handwriting contrasting with his messy, big handwriting.
'I like your pick-up lines.'
His beaming smile made my day.
__
Every day after that, I'd see a post-it inside my locker, each day a different pick-up line. They were cheesy, maybe, but I found myself looking forward to the lines, every night wondering what he would write the next day on his pink post-its.
"Are you tired? Cause you've been running through my mind all day."
"Are you french? Cause 'eiffel' for you."
"Are you a parking ticket? Cause you got 'fine' written all over you."
"My parents told me to follow my dreams, so can I follow you home?"
"Can I tie your shoes? Cause I don't want anyone falling for you."
"I would say God bless you, but it looks like he already did."
"Are you a 45 degree angle? Cause you're a-cute-y."
"Your eyes are like Ikea- I get lost in them."
"Did it hurt? When you fell from heaven?"
"Look at your keyboard. U and I are together."
"Something is wrong with my eyes, cause I can't take them off you."
"I realized why the world is so imperfect- it's because you're too perfect, there was none left."
"Is your name Google? Cause you're everything I've been searching for."
"Are you a magician? Because everytime I look at you, everyone else disappears."
"I didn't believe in love in first sight, so God sent you to prove me wrong."
"Hey, you're pretty, and I'm cute. Together, we'd be 'pretty cute'."
"Are we in a love story? If so, then I wish I'm the love interest."
"What's your blood type? Mine's U+, because U+I would get all the blood rushing to my head."
"I must have done something amazing in my past life to have you in my current one."
"I can see others' futures... yours, for example, is with me."
"Sometimes, I envy your warm packet in the winter. Cause I want to be the one keeping your hand warm."
I took pride in how he'd respect the apostrophe every single time.
At first I let the post-its stay where they were, but after a month, the inside of my locker was covered in so much pink, it looked like I'd painted the inside of my locker. So I removed them everyday, sticking them on the walls of my room instead.
It went on, for the entire year.
As much as I liked his pick-up lines, I never wrote back anything.
Eventually, I finally decided to respond.
I stuck a light blue post-it next to his latest one. It read:
"All year you've written me pick-up lines everyday, and you still don't know my name."
The next day, there was no post-it in my locker.
__
Did he think I was mocking him with that sentence?
I was struck with paranoia. That moment, I could break down. I didn't realize how much I missed his sweet, cheesy pick-up lines until I lost them.
But fortunately, I didn't.
Someone tapped me on the shoulder.
It was him.
In his hand, he held a pink post-it.
"You're early today," He said.
He observed me, then added,"You look really relieved to see me."
He reached past me and stuck the post-it inside my locker. "Anyway, there's your pick-up line for the day!" He joked.
I read it. It said: 'So, are you going to tell me, or can I just call you mine?'
He waited.
I turned to look at him."Yes. Yes, you can."
__
He didn't stop with the pick-up lines, even after we'd become a couple.
I was amazed at how he could come up with so many.
Then, one day, it was me who stuck my light blue post-it in his locker.
"Can you be the salt to my pepper, the peanut butter to my jelly, the macaroni to my cheese, the shampoo to my conditioner, the lock to my key, the shoes to my socks, the up to my down, the high to my low, the happy to my upset, the love to my heart, and my date to the prom?"
