Chapter #7
"Would you look at the wings on this one!", Gladin whistles, walking around Donnel to get a better look. Azeal is a little tense when the Caelum unfolds his wings. Now that everyone is looking for it, it's obvious that Axeal's wings are larger and more heavily muscled then the others' wings, even though the rest of him is smaller.
"With wings like that, I bet he could be apprenticed to a warrior without doing any testing first", Mindra gawks. Azeal uncomfortably pulls his wing back in. Donnel has moved to face him again.
"Does Aunt Sulena know you here, Azeal? Are you doing ok?", Donnel keeps looking Azeal over, trying to find any sign of anything going wrong. His heart lurched when Gladin touched Azeal. No one should touch him.
"No...... Mom would have never let me come. I'm sorry! I-I was just sick of being alone", Azeal gets quieter and hunches his shoulders. He doesn't know how odd it is to be so emotionally open. It melts the girls' hearts. Donnel and Gladin both want to gag.
"Azeal, it's ok! You're not in trouble! We were just curious about who you were. It's dangerous to fly alone at night", Tiluna hugs Azeal, much to his own shock. He hesitantly hugs back.
"So... if it's bad to fly at night, what are you guys doing?", Azeal isn't accusing or suspicious, but just curious. The others shuffle their feet a little, not expecting the question.
"Well, ah, we heard the warriors talking about something they..... caught", Mindra bites her lip.
"Yeah, and we're not really suppose to be following them", Donnel knows that Azeal hates breaking rules, and this second danger should get him to turn back.
"C-Can I come along?", Azeal surprises everyone with how quick he volunteers, "You won't even know I'm there! I can help with anything you need".
"Why not? We can always use him as a sacrifice if we get caught", Gladin is quick to answer, lightening the mood with the joke.
Donnel's eye twitches. Azeal can't come. He's dangerous and could be set off by the littlest of things. It doesn't matter if Azeal himself doesn't show it. All of his kind turn out bad. It drives Donnel crazy that he can't tell anyone about it. Still, he's outnumbered.
"It's gonna be so cool! I've never even been so far from the village at night", Tiluna cheers. She grabs Azeal's hand and pulls him towards the edge of the cliff.
She only lets go when she takes off, and Azeal quickly follows her with strong beats of his wings. Gladin and Mindra jump in right beside. Donnel scrambles after them and does his best to catch up with Azeal. He wants to keep a close eye on him.
The five of them fly farther away from the lights of the village. Gladin seems to know where the warrior Caelum are, and directs them with little flicks of his wing tips.
Azeal has never flown in a group like this, so he's never seen how they all communicate in the air. They can't hear any words over the wind and distance. The other Caelum also bat their wings at each other. They're all playing together.
Feeling a little more confident, Azeal turns sideways and reaches out his wings so he just barely grazes Donnel's wing. His cousin flinches back. Azeal is confused when he moves away. It's just playing, right?
They keep moving, exited by the hunt.
