Chapter Two: School

At school the next day, everyone except you and Lucas missed the girl who was killed. As per usual, everyone stared at you as you walked by, and Lucas made that same stupid face to avert their gaze.

He would always make a silly face and jump around like a monkey, yelling, "You wanna go, mate? Come on! Come at me!" It always made you laugh, and it always made whoever was staring roll their eyes and look away.

You and Lucas went to first hour and sat in your usual desks. Everyone was whispering and pointing at you. Lucas leaned forward and made a face that gave you the chills. "You talking about us, bitch? Eh?"

The girl sitting in front of you, Jessica (one of the most popular girls in school), turned around and glared at you both. "Actually, we are," she hissed, "And it's none of your business, you filthy wretch!"

You were about to punch Jessica for calling your best friend a skank, but the teacher walked in before you could even raise a fist. Jessica smirked and turned away. Lucas leaned toward you and whispered, "I hope Toby kills her, next."

You giggled and the bell rang, signifying the beginning of class. Your teacher straightened some papers and stood up to address the class.

"I'm sure you have heard about what happened to your friend," he began.

"BOO!" Lucas joked, earning a glare from the teacher. You laughed, but quickly silenced yourself when his glare was aimed at you. Mr. First-Hour cleared his throat and continued: "It seems there is an escaped convict somewhere in (H/T)."

You scoffed. "Escaped convict"? Man, Mr. First-Hour was dumber than you thought!

Mr. First-Hour cleared his throat again, and went on: "Because of our... situation, we will have an intruder drill this hour."

Everyone groaned. Your class loved to talk, and during an intruder drill, you weren't allowed to make a sound.

~Le Time Skip brought to you by Slender Man's tentacles (and my laziness)~

You and Lucas sat at the same table for lunch every day. Lucas was stuffing his face with mashed potatoes as you picked at some green beans with your fork.

"Hey, (Y/N)!" Lucas said once he had finished devouring his lunch, 'Wouldn't it be cool to be able to see Toby in person?"

"Well," You responded thoughtfully, "I think if you ever had the chance, you wouldn't live to tell anyone."

"Who cares!?" Lucas responded proudly, "Hell! I'd be willing to be murdered, just to have the chance to see him! Life's not worth living, anyway."

"Lucas," you whispered, feeling concerned, "You don't mean that, do you? I... I don't want you to die."

"Aw, c'mon, (Y/N)!" Lucas said with a kind smile, "You know you're the only reason I'm still here, anyways."

Almost nobody knew this, but Lucas was born with a disorder called "Asperger's Syndrome". All the disorder really did was change the way he thought. It made him more intellectually capable, but it also made it difficult for him to control his emotions. It was for this reason that Lucas was depressed.

Of course, no one knew that, either. He always acted so cheerful and goofy, and it was because he was always with you. You were the only one who made Lucas happy, the only one who understood.

You sighed and nodded. "Yes, I know," you replied quietly, "but I don't like it when you talk about that."

Lucas hugged you. "As long as you're my friend, I'll be here, (Y/N)," he said. "I'll never leave this world until the day you stop caring about me."

You smiled and pushed him away gently. "That'll never happen, ya dingus," you laughed.

Lucas returned the smile. "I know," he replied.

Just then, the bell rang, signifying the next class. "Aw, boo!" Lucas exclaimed, "I didn't even get to eat my beans!"

"See you in 6th Period, Lu," you said as you gathered your stuff up to go to class.

"HEY! Wait, (Y/N)!" Lucas said suddenly, surprising you. You stopped and turned back. He was smiling widely. "I'm gonna come and sleep over tonight, okay?" He said this as a statement, not a request. Both of your parents knew how close you were, so Lucas was allowed to come over any time. He sometimes spent the night on weekends. This was Friday, so Lucas would be allowed to sleep over.

     You nodded. "Sounds good."

And with that, you parted ways and went about your day as usual, unaware of the horrors that lurked in your near futures...
