Chapter Three: Frozen in Fear
You shivered, wrapped up tightly in your favorite blanket. Lucas walked next to you, on your right side, wearing his favorite hoodie. "Tell me again," you said, "Why we're walking to school in the middle of the night in December with a murderer running around?"
"It's only 9:30," Lucas responded calmly, "and we're going to school so we can talk without your (Parent/Guardian) walking in on us."
You pulled your blanket more tightly around yourself as your teeth began to chatter. Lucas gave a goofy grin. "Want to borrow my jacket?" he asked kindly, "I've got lizard skin, so I can stand the cold."
You shook your head. "No, you'll get frostbite if you take it off in this weather."
Lucas shrugged. "Suit yourself," he said, but when he glanced up, his eyes were bright with excitement. "There it is!!!" he cried, running ahead. Without him next to you, you instantly felt less secure. You scurried to keep up with him and nearly collided with him when he skidded to a stop at a bench in the school courtyard.
"Oh boy!" you cried sarcastically, "A bench!!"
Lucas ran his fingers across the smooth planks on the seat. "Hey, check it! The dewdrops have frozen into little ice drops!"
You would have laughed at his joke if you hadn't have had a sudden feeling of dread creep over you. Something didn't feel right about this; no, something seemed very wrong.
Lucas stood up and looked at you, frowning. "What's up with you, mate?" he asked, "You've gone white as a sheet!"
"I think we should go home, Lucas," you squeaked, "Something doesn't feel right--"
Before you could finish your sentence, you noticed a glint of light shine on something behind Lucas. You didn't have to guess at what is was--You knew exactly what is was: Toby's goggles.
"L... Lucas--" you began, your eyes widening. As the dark figure edged closer, Lucas stood completely still and became almost as white as you were.
"I can feel... his eyes, (Y/N)..." Lucas whispered. "(Y/N), I want you to run. Run as far away as you can and do not leave your house for a week, do you understand me?"
It was rare that Lucas ever used this tone, but you knew from experience that he was either dead serious or terrified out of his wits.
...Or both.
The figure edged nearer and nearer. Now the light was glinting off of something in its hand: a hatchet. Taking a step backward, you gulped. "L-lucas..." you stammered, but you were interrupted by your best friend's hushed warning: "Get out of here, (Y/N)."
Toby was mere meters away from your friend, now. You were frozen with terror, unable to move even though every voice in your head screamed at you to run. Suddenly, the figure lurched forward and pounced on Lucas, knocking him to the ground. In a millisecond of panic, you rushed forward as Toby raised his hatchet and cracked his neck, his head twitching uncontrollably.
But something happened, stopping you in your tracks. Toby stopped twitching. His hand began to shake. You stopped in your tracks as the killer seemed to hesitate. Was he... reconsidering? But it was not to last. Toby began to twitch again and brought the hatchet down on your friend's chest as he turned to you and tried to scream: "RUN--!"
The hatchet came down once, twice, thrice, four times, five... Blood was spurting from the wounds in Lucas' chest and flowed in a steady stream from his mouth as his words were replaced with flowing, sticky, red blood. You watched in horror as Toby continued to hack into Lucas, over and over until you were certain he would hack him in half. Twitching, Toby stood and turned to you.
Again, you were immobilized by fear. Tears streamed down your face and you mouthed the words "No... no.... please, no...." A distant scream caught Toby's attention, and you took your chance to flee. You knew that Toby was faster, stronger, and overall superior to you, but you didn't care. You wanted to die. Lucas was dead. Your best friend in the whole world had just been murdered before your very eyes.
After the adrenaline in your veins was replaced with cold air on your skin, you slowed down and looked around.
"No Toby here... No Toby there..."
You did not let your guard down, and despite the cold, managed to get home before 10:00.
....And then you realized that you had left your blanket at the courtyard.
