The next day I woke up in his arms again, with the morning sun shining on my face. “Good morning.” I said sleepily as he smiled. We got up and had something to eat and then I just sat on the bottom branch of the tree, watching him as he lay in the sun, doing nothing. Eventually he got up and came to talk to me about something. I had known all morning that it would be difficult.

“Do you want to do something today?” I was slightly surprised but tried not to show it.

“Like what?”

“Want to go for a swim?” I looked at him carefully I could tell he was trying to hide something.

“You do not mean up here do you?”

“Can we go down to the lake?”

“If you want, yes.”

“Really?”

“Yes, there is no need to look so surprised.”

“Well it’s just I wasn’t sure if I was still in captivity.” He smiled at me, but I unexpectedly felt uneasy.

“No, you are free to leave whenever you want.” I said, putting more meaning into the words than necessary. He looked at me for a second.

“Well then, let’s leave for the lake and come back again later on.”

“As long as we stop off in the village first.”

“Why?”

“I have been neglecting your grandmother.” I smiled at him and climbed up the tree, putting on my small top and short skirt, grabbing my robe and leaping down tying it around my waist as I descended. I landed next to Beau and held his hand, “Want to try something new?” I asked him playfully, he just looked at me dubiously.

“Will I like it?”

“I think so.” He looked at me and smiled weakly. “Cheer up.” I pulled a couple of pieces of fruit from each tree and put them into the bag over my shoulder, trying to work out how to do this. “Right, now put both your arms round my waist and hold on tightly.” He did it and I smiled at him, putting both my arms around his and holding on even tighter.

I lifted us up and floated over the pool gently, our toes just above the surface of the water. “This is alright.” He said. Then I took us over the edge of the waterfall and dropped down, I felt his arms tighten around me and tried to hide my smile. I slowed down when we got nearer to the ground and then stopped at the side of the small stream. He stood still for a moment, still clinging on to me.

“You can let go now if you want.” He smiled at me.

“Why would I wan to do that? I’ve got you right where I want you.” he said, kissing me forcefully, making me gasp for air when we broke apart. I looked at him and saw plain happiness in his eyes. I took his hand and started to walk along the uneven path through the jungle slowly.

Eventually we got to the village and his hand tightened round mine until we got close to his grandmother’s house, then we both loosened our grip until we were no longer touching and had our hands by our sides, we had done it unconsciously and smiled at each other when we noticed. We walked to the house and saw her sitting at the door as usual, both trying to ignore her scrutinising gaze. “It’s about time you both visited me.” I smiled at her abrupt welcome and saw Beau doing the same.

The woman stared at us again, watching us closely as we went into the house with her, “These are for you.” I told her, pulling the wide variety of fruits out of my bag and placing them on her table. Her attention changed from the two of us to the fruit and I glanced at Beau, seeing the amused smiled on his face made me smiled as well, he caught my eye and a spark seemed to fly across the room like a fiery ember. The woman looked up suddenly and we tore our eyes apart, looking at the floor. No one said anything for a while, just sitting in the house in silence.

“Something’s different here.” She finally said.

“What do you mean grandmother?”

“I’m trying to work it out…” as she spoke we could see it click in her head and I smiled. “You have been together these last few weeks.” She said slowly and I nodded, feeling Beau’s eyes on me. She noticed too, “Don’t worry Beau, I won’t say anything to try and hurt her, your eyes are brighter, you both look happy, I’m happy that you have found each other.” She smiled at us and I felt if a constricting weight had been lifted that I did not understand. We sat there and talked for a while, but I could tell that Beau was getting bored, as could she. “Well you two better get going, I’ve got things to be doing.” I smiled at her.

“Thank you.” I said with a bit more emotion that necessary, she looked at me and then nodded slightly.

“It’s okay.” Beau held my hand as his grandmother walked to the door and smiled at her, then we left and walked through the village together, people looked at us, but we did nothing about them. We got to the lake and saw a few men there, Beau paused. “It’s my brother.” He told me quietly, I could see the split decision in his face and decided to take the initiative.

“I am going to go swimming, if you want to come then you can.” I walked around the edge of the lake until we were near the waterfall and took of my robe, hanging it on a branch and then turning to him. I put my arms round his neck and kissed him tauntingly, pulling away just as he got interested. He looked at me and tried to kiss me again, but I pulled away and smiled at him cheekily, then sat at the edge of the lake and just waited, saying nothing and just watching him with sad eyes.

“Oh I can’t resist those eyes.” He said laughing and pulled off his top, splashing into the water in front of me. I smiled and held out my arms to him, he rolled his eyes and held his arms up to me and I slipped into them in the water. The water came up to his shoulders and would have been over my nose, but he held me round the waist and kept me up.

I kissed him again and then swam out near the middle of the lake, he followed me and a grin came onto his face, I stopped, looking confused. He put his arms under the back of my legs and pulled me under the water suddenly, I kicked back to the top and glared at him but he was laughing too hard to notice. He caught sight of something over my shoulder and stopped laughing.

I turned around in the water and saw his brother and friends, swimming towards us. I went to Beau and treaded water next to him, as his brother got closer to us he instinctively went ever so slightly in front of me. “Hey Beau, you’ve been gone a while.”

“I guess, not that long though.”

“I suppose. So who’s your friend?”

“This is Ilea, I met her a few weeks ago, I’ve just been showing her around.”

“Oh right. Has my little bro been looking after you Ilea?” He looked at me and I suddenly got a flash back of Ando, I would play this one differently.

“Yes, he has been very helpful.” I smiled slightly, knowing it would not reach my eyes.

“Good, good. So when you said hi to her the other week, you did know her?”

“We met in the lake before, and had a bit of a conversation but she had to go so we didn’t make any other sort of acquaintance.”

“Oh right. I’m slightly surprised at you Beau, you didn’t even tell dear grandmother that you were going away, she actually asked me where you were.” I felt selfish at this point, Beau’s grandmother must have been really worried about him to have asked his brother.

“Yeah, well it was slightly unplanned.” Beaus smiled at me with a glint in his eye. His brother looked slightly off put about the open friendliness of the smile.

“Ah.” He caught sight of the necklace around my neck, “Isn’t that yours Beau?”

“What?”

“That necklace that she’s wearing?”

“Oh that, yes, that’s mine.” His brother smiled and nudged a young man behind him.

“So you’ve even given her jewellery?”

“It appears so.” Beau said smiling.

“But that means that you’re more than just friends doesn’t it?” Beau looked at me as if asking permission, I nodded ever so slightly.

“Yes, it would appear to be so.” He said smiling.

“That’s nice.” The look on his face completely contradicted his words. I thought for a moment and then smiled at him in the ‘stunning’ way, I only stopped when he looked sufficiently stunned; the young men behind him did not look any better. I put my arms round Beau’s waist, under the water, and felt him lean against me ever so slightly.

“You alright Ida?”

“Yeah.”

“You just look slightly confused.” Hid brother shook his head as if trying to clear it and I hid a smile behind Beau’s shoulder.

“No, I’m fine, just thinking.” I smiled at him again and the stunned expression came back.

“I really don’t think you are, how long have you been in the water?”

“Erm… About four or so hours.”

“You’ve all probably been in the sun to long.” Ida shook his head again.

“No, we’re fine, but I need to talk to you, alone.”

“Can’t you just say it here?”

“No.” I could see Beau did not want to leave me alone, but I was okay.

“It is fine, I will go and sit over there.” I kissed him on the side of the neck and felt satisfying goose bumps appear on his arms. Then I swam to the side of the lake, they all watched me go, Ida could not stop ogling me. I pulled myself up out of the water slowly and turned around, smiling at him again in that stunning way and then walked into the trees and pulled on my robe, listening to them.

“I thought you said you were going to think about joining the army.”

“I did.”

“But now you’re just going to throw it away.”

“Look Ida, I’m not going to discuss this it in front of your friends.”

“Fine.” They swam off and when they’d gone he continued. “So you are going to throw it away.”

“I’m not ready to die.”

“Oh don’t be so melodramatic, the only reason you’re not joining is her.”

“Ida if that were true then why didn’t I join straight away? I hadn’t even met her then.”

“It doesn’t matter Beau, I can tell how much you like her… Maybe more than she likes you?” Beau paused uncomfortably.

“That’s not of your concern Ida.”

“It is if you get hurt.”

“Oh spare me, you only care whether I join the army because if I don’t your friends might make fun of you, you’re acting like a child.”

“And you’re acting like a love struck idiot.”

“Why? Because I don’t want to join the army, because I want a chance to run my own life?”

“No, because you’re chasing a girl that doesn’t even look at you the same way that you look at her.”

“I’ve told you Ida, that’s none of your business, you don’t even know Ilea.”

“I know, but do you?”

“More than you know.”

“Is that supposed to be some kind of defence? Some kind of explanation?”

“Not knowing her didn’t seem to stop you when you saw her here the other week, when you were the one calling at her.”

“That was totally different, I wasn’t in love with her.” He spat.

“So why did you want her Ida?”

“You know exactly why I wanted her, just looking at her makes me…”

“Don’t even go there Ida.” He spoke in a deadly voice and I was surprised but still glad; I’d heard enough from Ida.

“Why, does it upset you to think that I wanted to sleep with her, that I wanted to feel her…”

“I’m warning you Ida, don’t even go any further.”

“Or you’ll do what Beau, what will you do?”

“I wouldn’t do anything to you Ida, I would have nothing more to do with you at all.”

“You turned out to be a fine man Beau, so full of what’s the right thing to do is, it makes me sick.”

“It’s not my fault you can’t stomach anything that’s not your own way.”

“I don’t mind when things don’t go my way, but the way you are just doesn’t make any sense, why throw any sort of life away for a girl?” Beau snorted.

“Just you saying that shows that you will never understand; there’s more to life than fighting and sleeping with girls.”

“You sound like one of those old knights. Keep up with the times Beau because you’re getting left in the old ages.”

“Maybe they’re better than the ones we’re in now.” Beau said calmly and turned around, swimming back to the edge of the lake. He got out of the water and took one look back at his brother swimming away and shook his head, coming to find me in the trees. When he appeared I could see the pain in his face.

“I am sorry.” I whispered.

“What for?”

“For causing that.”

“It wasn’t your fault, he’s had a problem about me not joining the army, remember I showed you that he had? Well he wants me too, but I don’t want to die Ilea, I’m only in my nineteenth cycle.” I went up to him and hugged him, trying to comfort him, but his brothers words still rung in my head ‘maybe more than she likes you.’

“I have to ask,”

“Yes?”

“What did you do to him and the others?”

“Oh, when they looked confused?”

“Yes?”

“Well, I got told a while ago that I seemed to have a type of smile that, stunned people, boys or men in particular.”

“So you used it on them?”

“Yes.” He looked at me for a moment and then grinned.

“Can I see it.”

“Are you ready?” He smiled at me and nodded, so I smiled back, stunningly. He stared at me like the others, transfixed by me, I stopped smiling and reminded him to breathe.

“And you did that to him?” I nodded. “Well don’t do it again.” He said almost sharply, I felt taken aback and looked at the floor embarrassed, he put his hand under my chin and turned my face up to his, “I don’t want you looking at any other man like that, you’re mine.” I looked at him speculatively. “I mean, if you want to be, I wasn’t trying to claim ownership, it’s only…”

“Shut up.” I said and kissed him. “But the look was questioning why you do not want me to do the smile anymore?”

“I don’t know how to describe it without it sounding…” He trailed off.

“Just try, please, I really do not understand.” He thought for a moment.

“Well, you know when you’re about to get kissed by someone, that your attracted to, your heartbeat goes faster and your in suspense for that second before your lips touch, you hardly even breathe. That’s what the effect is when you smile like that, it’s as if you’re about to kiss me.” He explained.

“Oh, I had not realised.”

“It’s okay.”

“And do not worry, I will not do it to anyone again, well except you.”

“Me?”

“Yes, I am yours, remember?” I smiled at him coyly and then changed it to the stunning smile, he was transfixed again and then I leant in and actually kissed him. He pulled me to him and kissed me recklessly; pressing his mouth hard against mine, wrapping a hand in my hair and pushing his other hand against the small of my back, making me arch my body towards him. After a while I felt myself start to want his body much more than I should and felt my self-control starting to slip, so broke away taking a couple of steps back and gasping for air. “Wow.” I panted.

“Sorry.” He said back, breathing heavily with his hands on his knees. We just stood there getting our breath back.

“I did not expect that.”

“Neither did I.” He looked up at me, “Why did you actually kiss me?”

“I wanted to see what happened.” I said honestly and then smiled at him mischievously, “I might do that again some time.”

“Why?”

“Because I liked the reaction.”

“You just like to play with me.” He said slightly off hand and standing up straight.

“And do you mind?” I said defiantly.

“Not really.” He grinned, putting his hands on his hips and shifting his weight to one side. I walked back to him, stood on my toes and kissed him gently on the lips. “We should probably go back now.”

“Are you sure you do not want to stay for a bit more of a swim?”

“No I’m fine… we can go for one back in the pool.” He smiled but I could see that something was annoying him, probably his brother, I did not mention it.
