Chapter 4: Useless
I dropped to the ground behind a tree and frantically looked for Amber.
I spotted her skating happily on the ice, where she had been for the past hour. She looked so content to stay there, and for a moment I thought about just letting her skate.
No. It's too dangerous with Dash nearby. She could be spotted, and that would be the end of it. Back to the Factory.
I checked for Dash again, but she had disappeared. That's probably a bad thing.
I slowly crept towards the frozen pond. Amber was on the complete other side. To get to her, if have to cross the pond. Without skates.
I stepped cautiously onto the ice with one hoof, then the other. Third hoof...
I slipped and fell. This isn't going to work. It would take too long to go around the pond, there must be another way.
It was then I remembered I had wings. Maybe I can't fly very well right now, but I can still fly.
I lifted off the ground. Alright. I have
To be fast. At least, as fast as these stupid weak wings can take me. I checked one last time to make sure Dash wasn't in sight...
3...2...1... GO. I darted across the ice. Come on... Come on... I worked to flap my wings as fast as I could. Half way across now...
I'm moving faster than usual, that's for sure. Before I knew it, Amber was right in front of me. It was only then that I remember that I can't slow down very well...
Crash! I barreled into her at full speed. Well, as fast as I was going, anyways. She let out a small yelp as we slid on the ice and slammed into the snow bank.
"Mystery!?" Amber shook herself. "What are you doing?!"
I got up and brushed the snow off my coat. "Dash..."
"Who?" She gave me a confused look.
"Rainbow Dash..." I panted. "She's here...."
Amber's eyes widened. "Rainbow Dash?! That phyco pony who tried to kill me?!"
"Yes! We have to get out of here!" I shoved her towards the cover of some bushes.
She got up and followed me as we ran. "What about Toaster?"
"He can care care of himself!" I answered stubbornly. "If he's to stupid to realize the danger, that's his problem."
"But... That's horrible! You can't just leave him to die!"
"I can do anything I want!" I glared at her. "Why should I risk my own life to save his? He doesn't seem to appreciate it..." I muttered.
Woo woo! The sound of a train whistle in the distance caught my attention.
"Come on, if we can get to that train, we can ride it out of Ponyville to wherever it's going." I started off towards the sound. When we got to the edge of the trees, I stopped.
We were now faced with an open stretch of land. I could see the train station from here, all we'd have to do is make a run for it.
"Ok, on the count of three, we'll make a run for it," I whispered to Amber. "One... Two... Three!"
We dashed from our hiding place and quickly made our way to the train. We ducked into one of the cargo cars, and sat down, panting, behind a stack of boxes.
Something's wrong. That was way too easy. Where was Dash?
I crept over to the doorway and peered out of the train car. It was only then that I saw the two shapes in the sky, hurdling towards us at full speed.
I gasped and stepped back from the door. No no no. I looked again.
The same to shapes were darting at full speed towards the train car. One was Dash, and the other was a yellow Pegasus. Nice, Glaze is going to get us all killed.
There was a ding, and the doors began to close. He's not going to make it... Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?
I watched intently, unable to drag my eyes away from the scene.
Amber peeked out from behind the boxes. "Mystery? What's going on?"
"Come on... Come on..." I muttered under my breath, though unaware that I was doing so.
Glaze flew into the car... And the door closed. Then...
BANG! There was a jolting impact, and the sound of shattering glass, then silence. When I opened my eyes, there was a massive dent in the car door.
Glaze got up and shook himself, panting. "THAT, was a close one..."
He went to move, then stopped.
"Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow."
"What's wrong?" I asked nervously.
He stepped away from the wall. I burst out laughing. His tail had gotten caught in the train door.
He growled at me. "Would you stop laughing and think about helping me?!"
I paused for a second. "There, I thought about it. The answer is no!" I laughed and turned my back to him.
Amber trotted over. "Mystery!"
I shrugged. "Why should I help him? He doesn't appreciate it!"
"We can't just leave him there!" She protested.
I sighed. "Didn't we already go over this?"
"Would you stop arguing and just get me out of here?!"
"Amber can help you, but I'm not lending a hoof!" I turned my back dismissively.
"Fine, I'll do it myself!" Amber shook her head angrily. "If nopony on this train has a heart, I guess it's up to me!"
"Are you saying I don't have a heart?!" I scoffed. "I just risked my life to save yours! What do you call that?!"
She rolled her eyes. "Your two are both heartless killers. I don't know why I'm even still here, I could be back home in Cloudsdale by now!"
"CLOUDSDALE IS NO LONGER YOUR HOME!" I hissed. "Don't you get it?! YOU FAILED YOUR FLIGHT EXAM! You can't. Go. Back."
Her eyes widened in fear. "I... I... I did fail... Didn't I..."
"YOU BET YOU DID!" I turned away angrily. "Why did I save you?! I thought you weren't given a chance! Turns out you were just stupid and overconfident!"
"IM SORRY OK?! WHY DO YOU FREAKIN CARE?!" She yelled.
"BECAUSE I THOUGHT YOU WERE LIKE ME!" I didn't feel like explaining anything, so I didn't go any farther.
"Why in Celestia's name would I want to be like you?! I don't want to murder innocent foals for no freakin reason!"
I glared at her. "I. Didn't. Have. A. Choice!"
"GET AWAY FROM ME!" She screamed, tears beginning to stream down her face.
"Fine! Go sit in the corner, ya crybaby!" I scolded harshly.
"Maybe I will!" She yelled back.
"Good!"
"Don't talk to me!"
"YOU'RE THE ONE THAT'S TALKING TO ME!"
She let out another angry scream, then went silent. Nopony talked for the next few seconds.
Then Glaze spoke up. "Uhh... Anypony gonna help me?"
I glared at him. "No."
He rolled his eyes. "Useless pile of manure," he muttered angrily.
I looked up. "Don't call me useless!"
He rolled his eyes. "Oh, you want me to lie?"
I narrowed my eyes and looked back down at the ground. "No, I want you to stop being an idiot."
He got up and tried to pull his tail free, but he was stuck fast. "Nice. Well, I guess I'm not going anywhere until we get to Canterlot..."
"Guess not."
He sighed and lay down, putting his head in his hooves. "I just want to go home..."
"Home? You don't have a home."
He glared at me. "The factory WAS my home. You ruined it for me."
"Oh, yeah yeah. I ruin everything! I'm just a useless piece of junk who can't do anything right!" I said sarcastically.
"That just about sums it up."
I turned and shot him an angry stare. I held his gaze for a few seconds, a glare of hatred passing between us. Then I nodded slowly. "I'll remember that."
I turned and walked away, lying down in the corner farthest from the other two ponies. I've had enough of ponies for today. I'm stuck on this train with a bunch of idiots.
I sighed. I couldn't get that one word out of my head.
Useless. Useless. Useless. All my life, that's all I've ever been. Its what everypony says i am. My former flight schoolmates. My flight instructors. Rainbow Dash, right before I left the factory. And now Glaze.
Useless pile of manure.
Thanks... I thought sadly. I know I am...
