Prologue

The little black Pegasus sat alone in an alleyway, her face to the wall and tears streaming down her cheeks. The only noise was the sound of her sobs echoing through the empty streets of Cloudsdale. She had lost everything.

First her parents, killed in the fire set off by them. The only two ponies that ever actually believed in her, gone. Killed by them, the other fillies that bullied her. Bullied her for not being good enough, not being fast enough, and not being strong enough. If you weren't a good flier in Cloudsdale, you didn't survive there. They had constantly called her names, beat her up, and harassed her before, but this time they had gone too far. And the worst part? Nopony believed her when she told the police that her parent's deaths were not accidental.

And now, after all that, she had to face the sad truth that she would never pass her flight test.

She really could fly, probably better than most of the flight school students! But only at a certain time. She could only fly when Luna's moon shone down over Equestria. Only at night.

The problem? Once again, nopony believed her. The poor filly had been denied the permission to take her test at night. She would never pass in the day. There was no hope.

She wiped a tear from her black eye, courtesy of the very same ponies that had killed her parents. She would never make it. She would be exiled. Nopony knows where the failures go, but she would rather die then go there.

Then something extraordinary happened. She looked up, and that was when her eyes fell on a poster. This wasn't just any poster. She scanned the writing.

Help Wanted

Upper Rainbow Factory

Everypony is useful to us!

Her bright violet eyes lit up. Suddenly there was hope! If everypony is useful, they would employ her, right? Of course, she'd need to be able to fly, but the manager would surely let her perform at night, wouldn't they?

That was the day that changed this poor filly's life. She went from being a outcast, to one of the most trusted Rainbow Factory employees. Even after finding out what really goes on there, she loved her job.

Years of constant bullying and harassment had rotted away her soul, until all that remained was a hunger for revenge. And manning a Pegasus Device was the perfect way to feed that hunger.

From the very first time she pulled that lever, the little black and purple Pegasus was happy. And she stayed that way for a long time. Four years to be exact. She grew into a strong young adult, but growing up comes with a price. Growing up has made this mare realize that she had gotten her revenge long ago. She no longer needed the comfort of killing the ponies that had been so cruel to her before. In fact, she no longer wanted it.

She had finally realized that what she was doing was morbid and wrong. Now each time she pulled that dreaded lever, she would look away, to avoid watching the gruesome deaths. She couldn't take it anymore.

This filly wanted out. But there was one problem...

Becoming an employee of the upper Rainbow Factory means sacrificing any life outside those black walls. Workers are sworn to secrecy and forbidden from leaving, and live inside the facility itself. Those few who ever manage to make it out not in a body bag are twisted and disturbed, too damaged to ever bring themselves to talk about it. There is no escaping the factory... Or is there?

So you may ask, why am I telling you this? Why do you care? Well, I felt that this story needed to be told. It's the story of the pony who DID escape. The pony who saved one filly's life, and later, the lives of thousands more. This is the story of a pony who shut down one of the most dangerous facilities in Equestria. And if you haven't already guessed it, that pony is me.

My name is Moonlight Mystery, and this is the story of my life. My life, which would have been nothing if I hadn't woken up from this horrible place.

All these years, I've stoked the fire, seen more pain than you could ever know...The tears of the broken, have washed away my soul. Now I'm pushed by desire to change the way my stream will flow, because now I'm Awoken, and I'm taking back control.
