Part 9
The small grocery store in Leadworth almost always contained someone somehow related to you. Amy knew this firsthand. When you lived in a small town, everyone was everyone's cousin.
However, she hadn't expected to run into her son-in-law.
"Doctor?"
His head snapped up. "A-Amy. Hey."
Nervous. Interesting.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, grabbing a pack of crisps off a shelf and throwing them in his basket, seemingly without looking.
She gestured to the milk she was holding. "Rory's sick and wanted milk."
"Right." He shifted on his feet and scratched his hair.
She waited for him to reply his own reason- after all, the Doctor wasn't one for domestic things like grocery shopping-and when he didn't, narrowed her eyes at him. "What are you doing here?"
"Oh, me? You know, just getting some-um, crisps. And biscuits. Yeah." He nodded his head too quickly and averted his eyes from her piercing gaze. "Weelll, I should probably be going. Nice seeing you, Amy!" He rushed past her, bumping her shoulder on the way.
She, ever the dutiful mother-in-law, abruptly followed him to the checkout.
"So what are you actually doing here?"
He jumped and turned around. "Amy!"
"Doctor!" She mimicked.
He sighed. "It's nothing, really. I'm just picking some things up for River."
She brightened up at the mention of her daughter. "River? How is she?"
"She's-um, fine. Still River." He laughed nervously.
"Next, please." The cashier called.
The Doctor glanced at Amy and gulped, placing his basket on the conveyor belt. She did the same, smirking at him as she watched the cashier unload crisps, pretzels, Nutella, toilet paper, a box of pregnancy tests, toothpaste-
Pregnancy tests.
"Amy?" The Doctor poked her cheek. "You ok?"
"Is River-oh my god, you got my daughter pregnant?"
His face burned red. "Well we don't know, there had been a problem in the med bay, so the diagnosis may have been wrong, which is why I bought these- it might be a stomach bug or something."
"River doesn't get sick." Amy stated, mind whirling as she considered the enormity of the situation.
"There's a first time for everything." He wrung his hands nervously. "I guess we'll tell you if it's-you know."
"Right. Okay. The TARDIS has my number, right? And River is doing okay? The morning sickness isn't too bad, is it? Have you let her go fight or shoot things lately?"
"She's fine, Amy. I'm not that bad of a husband, seriously."
There was a pause as the two of them stared at each other.
"That'll be 30 pounds." The meek voice of the cashier piped up.
The Doctor turned. "Right, money. Um." He patted his pockets, then turned to Amy. "Do you mind-"
Rolling her eyes, she pulled a few notes out her purse and handed them to the cashier.
-----
Her cell rang a week later with the TARDIS caller ID flashing. Yelping, she called Rory over and answered. "Doctor?"
"We're naming it Hazel."
"We are not naming the baby after Nutella!" River's voice rang in the background.
