New Kid In School
12 years ago, Gotham Elementary School
Once Bruce had full custody rights to Kevin, he wanted to make sure Kevin went to a good school. Kevin wanted to go to a regular public school not unlike his old school, Bennett Elementary. Bruce was willing to respect Kevin's wishes to go to public school, and had him go to Gotham Elementary School alongside Dick. Kevin remembered his first day at school quite well. He was new to the school, and he wasn't quite familiar with everyone there, except for Dick, but Dick was now in fifth grade while Kevin was in fourth grade. But Kevin was quite smart in class and answered a couple questions correctly. A couple hours later, it was soon time for lunch and recess. Kevin wandered over to Dick and said, "hey Dick! How was class?"
"Oh, class was boring," said Dick, "what about you? Did you make any friends in the classroom?" Kevin shrugged and said, "well no. I'm trying my best to not be the rich guy's son if you know what I mean... But I was able to answer the teacher's questions a couple times. I hope I don't come across as a nerd or anything." Dick placed his arm around Kevin's shoulder and said, "Kevin our father is the world's greatest detective. Being smart runs in the family. Embrace it, Kev." Kevin looked at his surrogate brother and asked, "do you want to play basketball? Basketball is my favorite sport." Dick shrugged and said, "actually I'm going to swing on the monkey bars. But I can show you where the basketball hoops are. And the balls." Dick then guided Kevin to wear the basketball hoops were and thankfully there was a spare basketball lying about. "Knock yourself out bro," encouraged Dick as Kevin wandered over to the basketball hoops and grabbed a basketball. He dribbled it a couple of times, having possessed that talent when he first picked up a basketball in kindergarten, and then he threw the ball into the hoop, the ball falling inside. "Alright!" Kevin said enthusiastically, smiling a genuine smile.
Kevin then decided to throw the basketball into the hoop a couple more times, actually having fun for once. Around the eighth time, Kevin's basketball accidentally bounced off of the hoop and started bouncing to a random direction. "Uh-oh!" Kevin said, chasing the basketball. It eventually rolled over to the left and landed on the feet of a girl around Kevin's age. She wore a Wonder Woman t-shirt, blue jeans, and yellow sneakers with pink shoelaces. She had Caucasian skin, red hair in a ponytail, and pretty sky blue eyes covered in glasses. She picked up the ball. Kevin rushed to the girl and said, "hi there. Sorry my basketball rolled over to you." The red-headed girl said, "it's okay. I know it was an accident. Here you go, catch!" She threw the ball to Kevin and he caught it. "Nice throw," said Kevin, "your hair reminds me of Ariel from The Little Mermaid." He blushed a little, thinking she was cute. "Thank you," said the red-headed girl as she blushed, "Ariel and Belle are my favorite Disney princesses." She smiled sweetly. "I like Beauty And The Beast too," said Kevin, "I'm Kevin Beaumont by the way." He offered his hand in a handshake. The red-headed girl shook his hand and said, "I'm Barbara Gordon. My friends call me Babs." Kevin smiled, his heart all aflutter and said, "nice to meet you Barbara. So you go to the class next to mine?" Barbara nodded and said, "yeah. Nice to meet you as well, Kevin." Of course, Barbara knew that Kevin was Bruce Wayne's son. She'd seen the news footage from a month back and remembered Kevin's face from her eidetic memory. "Would you like to play basketball with me?" Kevin asked. "I don't know if I'd be good at playing one on one..." Barbara shyly said, "and I wouldn't want to break my glasses. And nobody's offered me to play basketball with them. No boy that is..."
"How come?" Kevin asked. "A lot of the boys I interact with, outside of Dick Grayson, don't want a girl playing sports with them," said a pouting Barbara, "they say sports are for boys only and that I should stick to girly things. I bet they're just intimidated that I'm smarter than most of them." Kevin frowned and said, "that's insulting. Besides, there are plenty of female athletes that are great, including women's basketball teams!" Barbara got excited and said, "thank you! Finally, somebody that speaks English! You and Dick might be the only intelligent boys that understand me." Kevin dribbled the basketball and said, "we don't have to compete one-on-one. We could just take turns shooting hoops." Barbara smiled and said, "I'd like that. Alright then, let's play." Kevin and Barbara then rushed to the basketball hoop, and Kevin shot the basketball into the hoop, and once it bounced off, he caught the ball and gave it to Barbara. Babs then tossed the ball into the hoop and it landed perfectly into the net. "Nice shot Babs!" Kevin encouraged as Barbara caught the ball and gave it to Kevin. This went on until the bell rung, indicating that it was time to get back to class. "Well that was fun," said Kevin. "It sure was," agreed Barbara. "Thanks for playing with me, Babs." Kevin said as he put the basketball away. "No problem Kevin," said Barbara. "Maybe I can convince my brother to join us next time we want to play," said Kevin. Barbara smiled and said, "I'd like that. See you around." Kevin smiled and said, "you too." He was glad to make another friend.
