So this fanfiction is actually inspired by the prologue to the animated adaptation of Batman The Killing Joke. It's a shame that this animated adaptation is overshadowed by this scene.
Yeah, awkward... The rest of the film is good though. It's a guilty pleasure for me. A very guilty pleasure. I love the voice performances provided by Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Tara Strong in that movie, and I wrote a nonfiction about how Batgirl's voice actress gave me my first autograph because I was hyped for the movie and I even got an autograph from Mr Conroy himself years later.
I even got the movie for my birthday. So I have enough of a soft spot for it to where I can cut the film some slack. But what if, Barbara has listened to Bruce and not engaged with Paris Franz in the movie? I suppose she would've been better off. I'd been toying with this idea for awhile. I felt that adding my OC Kevin as a character/love interest/protagonist would make sense for the story as it would help with Barbara temporarily stepping down as Batgirl to do mundane activities. And I'd been toying with Kevin's subplot for awhile. Wanted to see what I could do with it, and I had wanted to go with the tragic origin story. And slightly aging Bruce up to where he's old enough to have had a son who is the same age as Barbara makes logical sense. The reason I usually have Bruce be in his late 40s and early 50s is because I have grown up seeing him as an adult in his maybe 30s, so seeing him a bit older to where he would be a few years away from becoming a grandfather made sense to me. Also, I figured it would make sense to have Kevin not look like Terry McGinnis because I wanted to do a design that matched the style of the animated adaptation. The crew had a hard time trying to work with a style that could capture the spirit of Brian Bolland's art, and they did a decent job. Heck, I would've been alright if the animated adaptation looked like Batman The Animated Series. So I drew Kevin with the intent of combining elements similar to The Animated Series along with a caricature of Christian Bale. I think it works for Kevin. Kinda funny that I'm a biracial Hispanic drawing a white guy who's likeness is based on a British actor that have played Batman and a Marvel villain. As for why it's called Awakenings? I was tempted to call the fanfiction Why Not Tonight as a reference to the Reba McEntire song of the same name. Then I thought of the Robin Williams hospital drama Awakenings and felt the title made sense due to romantic feelings starting to awaken inside Kevin and Barbara. The idea was a happy accident. One more small detail I want to point out. This story takes place in 2016, the same year the animated adaptation to Batman The Killing Joke was released. Remember that. Anyway, hope you guys like this weird story.
