A Promise

Due to different time zones, the news of Andrea's exposure and the reveal of Kevin's existence came to Gotham three hours earlier. And one of the first to hear about the bombshell was of course Bruce Wayne, his butler Alfred Pennyworth, and Bruce's adopted son Dick Grayson. Of course, the news of this came to their attention at 6 p.m. Gotham time. They had seen photos of what Kevin looked like alongside Andrea. Bruce was surprised to know that Andrea wasn't dead this whole time, and was even more shocked to realize he accidentally conceived a child! His own son. Bruce being the detective that he was, went to the Batcave to confirm this. But one hour later, the Batcomputer confirmed the relation, Bruce seeing Kevin's birth certificate that officially confirmed he was the biological father. Bruce came out of the Grandfather Clock and said, "I have a son, Alfred."

"Bruce, if that's the case, what are you going to do about it?" Dick asked. "Due to her crimes being exposed, there's a high likelihood Andrea will face jail time," said Bruce, "if anything, I owe it to Andrea to help raise our son. This isn't a job for Batman. It's a job for Bruce Wayne. Alfred, let the board know I'll be traveling to Bellevue, Washington. I'm going to be gone for less than five days. Can you keep an eye on Dick while I'm away?" Alfred nodded and said, "of course Master Bruce. I wish you the best of luck." The ten and a half year old Dick Grayson then asked, "what about Batman and Robin? Commissioner Gordon will start to suspect that Batman's gone. Is Robin the Boy Wonder going to have to go on patrol on his own?" Bruce shook his head and said, "it's dangerous to go on patrol on your own, Dick. I'll call Clark, he owes me a favor." As Bruce went to pack, Dick said, "guess I'm getting a little brother."

Less than two days later, Bruce had made it to Bellevue, Washington. According to news sources from Seattle and Gotham, Andrea had been put into custody at the Bellevue Police Jail, pending her trial. Bruce contacted the warden of that jail in order to speak to Andrea. His request was granted. Bruce was then put into a jail phone booth for jail visits. A minute later, Andrea was placed on the other side in order to speak to Bruce on the phone. It had been 11 years since they'd last seen each other. Andrea was now wearing a standard issue jail uniform, handcuffs on her wrists. Bruce picked up his phone and Andrea picked hers up as well. "Hello Bruce," she said, looking at her ex-lover. "Hello Andrea," replied Bruce, "it's certainly been a long time. How are you holding up?" Andrea sighed, "awful. My life is ruined, Bruce. I can accept that I've been caught for my crimes. These are the consequences for trying to run away from my past and I can accept that. But what I can't accept is that now everyone publicly knows about our son. The last thing my son needs is public exposure. And now, his life is destroyed. He's never going to know privacy and will never know a moment's rest again because every scumbag tabloid reporter will be on his ass, bombarding him with camera flashes and random questions! Part of me wants to get out of this jail and find those scumbags and kill them myself!" She glared down, angry tears. "I understand you're angry, Andrea." Bruce calmly said, "I'm appalled that you and Kevin were exposed like that." Andrea looked at Bruce and asked, "do you know how hurtful it was, hearing Arthur call my son a bastard child? I acknowledge that he was born out of wedlock, but that doesn't mean it's not hurtful to hear your own child be called a bastard son." Bruce looked at her sadly and said, "I'm sorry this happened, Andrea. I'm sorry that both of your lives were destroyed like this. But most of all, I'm sorry I wasn't there to see our son when he was born. If I'd known about our boy, I would have done everything I could to help raise him." Andrea placed her hand on the glass and said, "I believe you." Bruce placed his hand on the glass as well and asked, "what's our son like?"

"He's kind, sweet, smart, loyal," said Andrea, "he can be a bit stubborn. But he's the reason I wanted to be a better person. He likes to play basketball and baseball, and he likes to cook as well. He would love to have a father like you, Bruce. He's been waiting a long time to meet you." Bruce looked at Andrea and said, "I'm going to make a promise to you, Andrea. I'll find our son, and I'll raise him myself. Kevin will always be safe with me. He's just as much my responsibility as he is yours." Andrea smiled sadly and said, "thank you. I'm glad to know you'll be the one raising him." Bruce stoically nodded and said, "Kevin's family. And family comes before anything else." Andrea then said, "you better not make our son wear a mask and cape to fight crime. Because if you do, I'll break out of here and kick your ass." Bruce chuckled sheepishly, "I'll be sure not to."

Much later, Bruce drove over to the Child Protective Services Center in Bellevue since that was where Kevin was being temporarily placed at. Bruce spoke to the social workers, and they granted him permission to visit Kevin. They put the father and son inside a private room. Bruce was waiting for Kevin to come inside when one of the social workers came in with Kevin. The social worker said to Bruce, "you two take all the time you need. If there's any trouble, don't hesitate to reach out for help." Kevin looked at his father. He was quite big. Bruce gave a respectful nod to the social worker and said, "thank you." The social worker then left the room, the father and son looking at each other. Bruce could immediately tell that Kevin was his son. He looked just like Bruce when he was that age, especially since he had his eyes. "Hello Kevin," said Bruce, "my name is Bruce Wayne. We certainly have a lot to talk about." Kevin looked at Bruce and said, "it's nice to finally meet you, Dad... Is it okay if I call you Dad?"

"You and I are family, Kevin. And I am your father," replied Bruce, "of course you can call me Dad." He offered his hand as a handshake, noticing how Kevin had his mother's hair color. Kevin shook Bruce's hand. Bruce then said, "I'm sure you've heard this multiple times, but I care about your well-being, son. Are you okay? It's okay if you're not happy." Kevin shook his head and said, "I'm not okay, Dad. My mom was arrested and taken away from me. I might never see her again... These last few nights, I haven't gotten much sleep because Mom wasn't there to tuck me in... I miss her, Dad... You don't think I sound dumb, do you?" Bruce shook his head and said, "no. I don't think you sound dumb at all, Kevin. If anything, I understand more than anyone what you're going through. I know how it feels to have a mother taken away from you so abruptly, to suffer sleepless nights getting used to not having a mother there for comfort. I understand the sadness of never seeing someone you love again due to tragic circumstances and missing them. I understand your pain, Kevin. I was your age when I lost my parents. It's taken me a long time to come to grips with that pain." Kevin nodded and said, "Mom told me about Grandma and Grandpa. Does it ever stop hurting?" Bruce looked down sadly and said, "I wish I could say yes. But I've had years and people that care to help me come to grips." Bruce wrapped his arm around Kevin to comfort him. Bruce looked around and then asked, "did your mother tell you about my other job?"

"You mean... Batman?" Kevin whispered. Bruce silently nodded. "She told me," confirmed Kevin, "and she made me promise that I never tell anyone under any circumstance that you're, you know who..." Kevin then did a cross gesture on his heart to show honesty, much to Bruce's relief. "Your secret's safe with me, Dad." promised Kevin. Bruce smiled and said, "good. Kevin, you're my son. And I promised Andrea that I would raise you myself, because you're part of my family. Now I know that raising you means you'll have to leave Bellevue, but I promise you, you'll never be alone. I'll speak to the courts so that I can gain full custody rights to you. Everything will work out, I promise." Kevin smiled and hugged Bruce. "Thank you Dad," said Kevin. Bruce replied, "no matter what, I love you son." After speaking with CPS and a local judge in Bellevue, Bruce was able to gain full custody rights, making him the legal guardian and parent of Kevin. Bruce was even able to get Kevin's old belongings so that sleeping/living at Wayne Manor would feel like being at his old house. A couple days later, Bruce drove Kevin all the way to Gotham, showing him Wayne Manor. As they got out of Bruce's car, Bruce said, "welcome to your new home, Kevin."
