Chapter Two
Optimus began to stir as he was coming to. His new hands began to feel around. He noticed he had been moved from a very rough surface to now a very soft one. His eyes blinked open and his eyebrows furrowed at the sudden lights. He swallowed and looked around. Optimus noted he was in a small white room. There was a door to his right and a beeping noise came from his left. He frowned and looked down. His eyes fell upon a white blanket that was over his legs and his hands were laying by either side.
Optimus slowly lifted them. He looked at his palm and studied it closely. There were a few wrinkles and cracks and as he rubbed his hands together, they felt very dry. Optimus blinked in surprise.
He was able to feel different textures? Optimus had no idea human hands could be dry. His attention was then brought to his fingers and nails. He let his right hand slide down his left and then to his arm. There was many scrapes and bruises. Optimus lightly touched the blue and purple area with curiosity and instinctively pulled his finger away from the shot of pain he recieved.
He wasn't doing that again.
Optimus tilted his head slightly. What was this white plastic thing? He turned his hand over and glided his fingers over the tubes.
"I...I do not understand." He spoke quietly. Optimus jumped slightly as the door to the room then opened. His sensors hadn't even picked up movement from the other roo- wait. He didn't have that anymore.
"You are awake. Glad to see it. I'm Danielle, let's take a look at your vitals," a woman smiled in blue thin clothing. She pressed her hand against a container and began rubbing her hands tigether. Her white shoes squeaked against the clean tile as she made her way over to his left side. Optimus watched her as she fiddled around with a few buttons. "Are you in any pain?"
"No, what is this?" He asked gesturing to the white plastic on his arm. The nurse turned her head.
"Oh, that? An I.V. it's providing you with all the fluids you need at the moment. You were very dehydrated." She explained and turned to her clipboard for a moment.
Optimus blinked. "What is dehydrated?" He asked quietly. The nurse paused and her eyes lifted. She then turned to him.
"You...you don't know what dehydration is?" She asked slowly. Her eyes widening in concern.
"I apologize, but no I do not. Is it critical?"
"Well...the level of dehydration you were in, yes. But to answer your question, it depends. Dehydration is lack of water from your body which can be very dangerous. Your body needs water to survive."
"Oh,"
"We did a scan of your skull, we didn't see any head tramua yet but it could start to show in a week or more." The nurse spoke.
"...I don't think I hit my hel-head." Optimus corrected himself. He brought his arm up to feel through his hair for any signs of pain, finding none.
"You can never be too sure. You were apparently hit by a car." The nurse turned to face him. "I wanted to ask you a few questions if that's alright with you." She smiled softly. Optimus nodded.
"Alright,"
"What is the President of the United States currently?"
"I am unsure." A mark on the clipboard.
"What year is it?"
"I do not know." A scribble.
"Where do you live?"
"Cybertron." A pause then another scribble with a lift of eyebrows.
"What is your social security number?"
"Pardon?"
"I'm going to tell you three numbers. I want to try to remember them for me, okay?" A nod. "3. 7. 1. Got that?"
"I believe so. 3. 7. 1?"
"Yes. Lastly, what is your name?"
"My name is Optimus Prime," he said honestly and dipped his head in greeting.
The woman blinked.
"Right," she said slowly.
"Can you tell me where I am?" He asked slowly.
"Jasper's main Hospital." The nurse answered and shifted the clipboard in her arms.
"Does a Nurse Darby work here?" He questioned hopefully.
"A Nurse Darby? Um, I don't think so...would you like me to check for you?" She asked.
"It would be most appreciated." Optimus expressed a small smile of graditude. The nurse nodded as she went to his right and placed a remote into his dry hands.
"Well everything's looking fine so far.
.. I'll be back in about 30 minutes or so to check on you again. Press that red button if you need anything." She smiled sweetly as she began heading for the door then paused. "What were those three numbers?"
"3. 7. 1." He replied. She marked something down on her clipboard before leaving him alone. She shut the door behind her very quietly. Optimus frowned. He then glanced down to his wrist. How could this plastic thing provide all what he needed?
Optimus hummed in thought, the humans have gone far with their medical science.
Seeing how Optimus was in capable hands (since he was now human, he had no choice) he then relaxed against the bed.
...
"Um, you asked me to call you Optimus, correct?" Danielle asked him later that night. His empty dinner plate sat in his lap. Much to his embrassment, he had to ask for her stay because he had no idea how to eat.
"Yes." He nodded.
"And you're sure that is your real name?"
"Not exactly, my real name is Orion Pax. I was given Optimus Prime as a title." Optimus corrected. The nurse then breathed in relief.
"Alright, now we're going somewhere." She said as she marked a few things down on her clipboard. "Do you remember anything before you were hit by Miss Janets car?" She then looked up. She adjusted herself in the seat next to his bed.
"I...do not...." Optimus struggled with a frown. His hands twitched at his sides.
"That's okay. We can get to that later then." She then looked down at her clipboard then back at him. "Can you tell me how old you are?"
"I am unsure. I do not count my age where I come from. Although, by human standards I may be millions of years old."
The nurse set her clipboard on her lap with a sigh. "Orion, are you by chance into comic books and movies?" She asked the blue haired man.
"...into? May you eleborate?"
"Do you like comic books and movies?" She rephrased patiently.
"I...I do not know what they are," he admitted.
The nurse rubbed her forehead.
"Nurse Danielle, I appreciate what and you the Doctor have done thus far but I really must not stay here long. How long until I am able to leave?"
"Not for a while. We need to monitor your head in case head tramua begins to show...speaking of which. Still remember those three numbers?" Optimus sighed.
"3. 7. 1." He answered for almost the 20th time that day. She gave a thoughtful look then confusion before marking down on her clipboard again.
"I'm going to speak to the Doctor but before I leave, do you have any realatives?" She asked. Optimus looked to his fleshed hands. His eyes wandered over the different lines and he sighed.
"No, Danielle. I do not." Danielles eyes softened and she patted his arm. Optimus looked up to her. Danielle sniled.
"Well, if it's okay with the Doctor, I can take you down the hall and back. Would you like to socialize a bit?" She smiled. Optimus shook his head.
"No, thank you. Do you have...what do hum-we call it? Paper of news?" He asked slowly, his face scrunching slightly in thought. Danielle laughed.
"Newspaper. And I don't think I can but I'll see what I can do." She smiled. Optimus nodded.
"Thank you. Have you got any recent news about Nurse Darby?" Optimus shifted in the bedding. Danielle sighed and shifted her weight to her hip.
"I'm sorry but she doesn't work here anymore." She frowned.
"What happened?" Optimus asked in concern.
"She retired...er...1? No, 2 years ago. Her son works here now, Jackson Darby. He's not at work today but would you like me to call him in tomorrow?" Danielle offered, a sympathetic look spreading across her face.
"Yes, please."
A/N: I am so sorry for any errors! I'm rushing to get another chapter in before I see my Great Grandmother who fell yesterday and is in the hospital. She wants to know what happens next with the story (which I read to her yesterday while we were waiting for results) so I should be updating a chapter each day so she gets some entertainment and lifted spirits until she can come home. But this chapter is dedicated to my GG who is begging me to know what happens next.
