Chapter Six
Eleanor had enough of watching the news channel. It had been exactly a year since June 13th and the news were flooded with stories and records about it. It was all the same—from all around the world, people gathered in Odessa for what was supposed to be a three-day summit. But it was ruined by a despicable and cowardly act. Within hours, an evil supremacist named Mohinder Suresh claimed full responsibility for the attacks.
Eleanor let out a sigh and got up from the couch, walking upstairs to her room. Once she got to her room she ran her fingers through her blonde hair, lying down on her bed and grabbing a random book from her shelf.
It wasn't long until she felt her phone buzzing in her pocket. Putting the book aside, Eleanor took her phone out and saw that Tommy was calling.
"Hey," She answered the phone.
"Hey," From his voice she could somehow tell he was in a hurry.
"Are you okay? How was the meeting?" Eleanor asked, referring to the Evos meeting in Chicago that Tommy had said he would go.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm on my way back now." Tommy answered, yet she noticed he didn't answer her second question.
"How was the meeting?" She asked again.
"I left early. No one there could really help me. If anything it was more depressing than encouraging." Tommy finally answered.
"Oh..." Eleanor muttered.
"Coach Lewis was there," Tommy blurted after a moment of silence. That made Eleanor sit up from her bed.
"Coach Lewis? As in Coach Lewis from our school?" She asked just to make sure she heard him correctly.
"Yeah, he wasn't too fond of seeing me, though," He said, Eleanor wanted to ask him more question but he quickly said, "I got to go, my mom is looking for me."
"Oh, alright. Bye." Eleanor said and hung up the phone.
She couldn't deny how disappointment she was. She didn't really know how to help Tommy with his powers. She really hoped someone there would have helped Tommy.
********************
The day after, Eleanor wandered around Pinehearst High school halls, trying to find Tommy. She wanted to ask him more about the group meeting. She needed to find a way to help Tommy to deal with his power.
When she finally found him he was standing next to his locker, closing it. The look on his face already told Eleanor something was wrong and naturally, she wanted to know what.
"Hey," She said once she joined to his side. Before he could reply, a teacher came out of a class, crying. Eleanor looked at Tommy and they both walked toward the class the teacher had come out from.
"They said his wife didn't even know he was in Chicago." Eleanor heard from a group of three girls that were sitting near the entrance of the class.
"Did something happen?" Tommy asked the girls, but only one girl answered him, the other two were trying to avoid his gaze.
"Coach Lewis died in a fire last night with six other people." Eleanor's eyes widened, and before she could tell what was going on, Tommy grabbed her arm and rushed out of the class.
She had no idea where Tommy was taking her. She was still trying to take in what happened, when it suddenly dawned on her. Coach Lewis died in a fire last night. Coach Lewis was with Tommy at the Evo meeting group last night. Tommy could have died.
"Tommy," Eleanor said with choked voice. He continued walking. Only the second time she called him he actually seemed to hear her.
"It was my idea," Eleanor was trembling, "I was the one that told you to go to that meeting group." Tears started to fill Eleanor's eyes and it was hard to hold them back. "If you hadn't left early you could have—" She couldn't even finish her sentence. If anything had happened to Tommy she would have never forgiven herself.
"Hey, stop it," Tommy shushed her, "Look at me, I'm fine. I'm okay." He looked right into her eyes, trying to calm her down. It was somehow helping since Eleanor stopped trembling, but the tears were still visible in her eyes. "I am fine," Tommy repeated and Eleanor nodded as if she just understood it. She quickly wiped away her tears.
"Are you okay now?" Tommy asked after a few minutes of silence when Eleanor finally calmed down.
"Yeah. I'm sorry," Eleanor apologized, but Tommy shook his head.
"Don't be,"
When the bell rang Eleanor remembered she had trig, and she had to go to class. She really did not want to go, but she had no choice. When Tommy said that he would see her after class it made her feel a little bit better, but not completely.
Throughout the whole lesson, Eleanor wasn't focused since she could stop thinking about what could have happened. She knew she shouldn't be thinking about her, but the guilty kept nagging her mind. But as she thought about it more and more, things didn't make any sense.
Before the class started, Eleanor overheard a classmate saying that Mohinder Suresh took full responsibility. But why would he do it? But then again, he claimed full responsibility for the attacks at the summit, where both Evos and None-Evos were killed. It seemed like the world became a dangerous place for everybody.
She honestly just wanted Tommy to be safe.
***************
It was later that day when Eleanor found Tommy next to his locker again. Eleanor waited for Tommy as he closed his locker. Eleanor was surprised to see that a group of cheerleaders who were passing by waved to her. She hesitatingly waved in return and turned back to Tommy.
They started walking and Tommy opened his mouth to say something but he was interrupted by a voice behind them.
"Hey. You're the ice cream junkie, right?" Eleanor turned her head to see Emily Duval walking beside them.
"What?" Tommy asked, looking confused for a moment.
"Well, you're at Moe's all the time." Emily explained, crossing her arms.
"Oh, yeah, I guess I like ice cream." Tommy replayed
Emily laughed, "So it's not because of me." Eleanor and Tommy looked at her. Was she... flirting with him?
"I'm just messing with you." Emily smiled at Tommy, "I'm the one who drew the happy face on your punch card."
"Oh, I know."
"Hey, we need a new scooper. You should come in." Emily suddenly said, "You should, too," Emily said, looking at Eleanor "They're letting me do the interviews."
"Okay. Yeah. Maybe." Tommy answered while Eleanor didn't say anything.
"Um, hey, I heard about what Brad did to you. I'm sorry." Emily looked apologetic. Eleanor was confused. What did she mean?
"What Brad did to you?" Eleanor finally spoke up, looking at Tommy suspiciously.
"Nothing. It doesn't matter," Tommy shrug it off
"Brad acts like a tough guy, but he's not. He's just..."
"A total narcissistic jerk?" Tommy completed Emily's sentence, which made her laughed.
"Sometimes. Yeah." Emily tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, "Hey, did you hear what they're saying about Coach Lewis, that he might have been an Evo?" The change of subject suddenly made Eleanor tensed up and without realizing, she grabbed Tommy's hand.
"Uh... An Evo?" Tommy pretended to be clueless
"Evolved, had powers." Emily explained just as the school bell rang.
"Really?"
"Well, I got to get to a French Club meeting. But seriously, you two should come in for that job." Emily smiled and walked away. Emily then saw Brad and she hurried to give him a hug and started walking with him.
Eleanor then heard Tommy's phone buzzing. Tommy went to grab his phone but then the both notice their intertwined hands. Eleanor was the first to pull away, muttering a quick apology.
When Tommy looked at his phone Eleanor noticed how the look on his face changed. He wasn't smiling like he had been only a few seconds ago. He looked somewhat scared.
"What's wrong?" She asked
Tommy hesitated but then he showed her his phone. There was a message from an unknown person that said : "Don't Trust Anyone."
"Who sent it?" Eleanor said, furrowing her eyebrows.
"I don't know, but it's not the first time I get those messages. Someone has been trying to warn me." Tommy said quietly.
"The question is, how does that person know you?"
*********************
"I can't believe you dragged me into this," Eleanor complained for what seemed to be the third time that day. The both just entered Moe's and Eleanor couldn't believe he convinced her to come.
"Oh, come on, it's not so bad," Tommy tried to cheer her up.
They walked toward the counter where Emily was making orders. When Emily saw them she smiled widely, leaving whatever she was making.
"I so glad you two came," She continued to smile, "Come on, let's go to the back office and we will start the interviews."
"Actually," Eleanor spoke up, getting Emily's attention, "I not looking for any job at the moment, I just came for the support." Emily's smiled faded and was replaced with a frown. She genuinely looked disappointment.
"Alright then," She turned to Tommy, "Come with me," And then both Emily and Tommy walked toward the back office. Tommy gave Eleanor last glance before he went inside and Eleanor mouthed him a quick good luck.
While waiting for Tommy, Eleanor sat on one of the chairs that were near the counter, doing nothing in peculiar. The only reason she was there was because Tommy had been asking her to come all day long, and the only way to make him shut up was to agree.
She didn't have to wait long, though. It only took Emily and Tommy a few minutes to return. Emily was holding a few uniforms and she was explaining something to Tommy. Tommy then looked down at something and then he said something to Emily.
When Tommy started walking toward Eleanor, she thought he was going to tell her how was the interview, but instead, he walked right past her, muttering a quick 'I'll be right back'. She was even more confused when he suddenly sat in front of a man who was sitting in a booth.
She couldn't hear their conversation but Tommy obviously seemed to know that man from somewhere. However, Eleanor knew something was definitely wrong when a woman joined their conversation and they all of the sudden went toward the back door of the store.
She decided to follow them, though Emily was quicker. But Eleanor didn't expect what happened next. When Emily yelled at Tommy that he had forgotten to try on his uniforms. The man and the woman Tommy had walked with turned around and they were holding guns. Both Emily and Eleanor were frozen to the spot.
"Well, it looks like the three of you are going for a little ride." The man said.
"No need. We'll take them all now." The woman said, aiming her gun to Emily. She was about to shoot, and neither Eleanor or Emily could move or do something.
Eleanor was positive that if she had blinked, she would have missed it. Just as the woman was about to shoot, Tommy raised his hand and the gun disappeared. Less than a second, the woman disappeared as well. The man didn't have time to react, because when Tommy looked at him he also disappeared.
Eleanor saw that Emily looked frightened when she looked at Tommy, and Eleanor wanted to say or do something.
But Tommy had already run off.
_______________________________________________________________________
Hey guys, I have something important to tell you! I rewrote the first four chapters of Awakening since parts of the story seemed very unrealistic and Eleanor sometimes seemed out of character so I had to change it. You can go back and read it again if you want but most of it is the same.
