Chapter Seven

Every time Eleanor did something without thinking it had big consequences, she knew that. Though, this time, she didn't care.

After Tommy had run away from them, it took her a few moments to react. She ran after him, not even thinking of what would happen or what she would do when she find him. Unfortunately for her, Tommy was apparently much faster than her and she lost him after a few minutes of running.

She finally stopped, panting heavily. She looked around hoping to find a glimpse of Tommy but he was nowhere to be seen. She was a bit confused when she heard a loud honk and she saw a green car stopping next to her. Her confusion vanished and turned into surprise when she realized Emily was driving the car.

"Get in," Emily said quickly. She didn't think twice and she quickly listened to Emily. They didn't talk while they were searching for Tommy, and if Emily said something, Eleanor probably was too deep in thoughts to notice.

Those people tried to kill Tommy, and they didn't hesitate when they tried to kill Emily and Eleanor as well. Eleanor wasn't sure about the woman, but Tommy obviously seemed to know that man from somewhere. The question was why they tried to kill them?

The most reasonable hypothesis that Eleanor could have thought was that they tried to kill Tommy because he was an Evo and they tried to kill Emily and Eleanor since they had gotten in their way.

Eleanor tried to think of the places Tommy could have gone to. The first thing that came into her mind was his house, so she quickly guided Emily toward his house. It didn't take long until they saw Tommy as he walked on the sidewalk.

"Hey!" Eleanor called and Tommy turned to look at her, "Where are you going?"

"Where do you think?" Tommy snapped, still walking. "Home, to pack and leave like we always do. Oh, my God, I am such an idiot, thinking I could have a normal life here. I'm just—" He stopped and looked at Eleanor and Emily, "I'm sorry."

"Those people... Where did they go?" Emily asked.

"I don't know. I don't know where any of it goes. How's that for the worst power ever?"

"You saved my life." Emily stated, but Tommy only shook his head and walked faster. "Tommy!" She shouted to him but he ignored her.

"Stop here," Eleanor told Emily. Emily quickly pulled over and Eleanor got out from the car, Emily wasn't far behind her.

"Tommy!" Eleanor tried to call him as well but he ignored her calls too.

"Your secret..." Emily suddenly said and that made him stop and turn around, "It's safe with me."

Tommy didn't move for a second, simply staring at Emily before he nodded and started walking again. Emily was about to go after him but Eleanor stopped her.

"I got this," Eleanor said and Emily nodded and went back to her car.

Eleanor immediately speeded up and walked beside Tommy. He didn't say anything, but she did.

"Just for the record, I don't think your power is the worst power ever. It saved my life. Twice." She smiled kindly at him, hoping to cheer him up. When he smiled back at her—even if it was a faint smile— she felt as if she had just won a gold medal. But when Tommy grabbed her hand and intertwined their fingers for comfort, Eleanor felt like a thousand fireworks were exploding around her.

"Pretty sure whatever I touch just like, ceases to exist." Tommy said while he was sitting in front of Eleanor and Emily. The trio was sitting inside of a shed, the only place they could find to talk secretly.

"I think you're being a tad melodramatic." Emily replied while playing with a purple flower in her hand.

"I kinda agree," Eleanor said, "But seriously, we should try to figure out how your power works."

"You don't understand how dangerous having a power is. It's like being a witch in Salem. People hate us. They want us dead." Tommy explained.

"How long have you had it?" Emily asked Tommy.

"Ever since I was a kid. When I was, like, seven, these people took me to this place because of my power. I remember a room filled with toys and stuff. No windows. It was kind of hazy. I think about it all the time. Especially when I'm scared." Tommy answered and Eleanor couldn't help but imagine the seven-years-old-Tommy trapped inside a room because of his power. Eleanor almost shuddered at the thought.

"Not like I run around all day terrified or anything." Tommy quickly added and Eleanor smiled at him, quickly pushing the remains of her last thought away.

"Will you make this disappear? I want to know what it feels like." Emily said, getting up from where she was sitting and holding the flower out for Tommy. He extended out his hand and carefully touched the flower with his finger. Much like the other time Tommy had used his power, the flower was gone in a blink of an eye.

Eleanor tried to remember how it felt when Tommy had used his power to save her from the car a few days before, but she couldn't remember. It all happened too fast and she was completely paralyzed by fear and shock. But she was hoping that maybe someday in the future she would get another opportunity.

Emily gasped as the flower disappeared "So cool." She said, looking at Tommy with amazement.

When the three finally left the shed, Eleanor noticed how worried Tommy looked. "Are you okay? You look a bit worried." She told him.

"'Worried' is kind of my default status. For obvious reasons." Tommy replied.

"I told you. You can trust me." Emily said, looking at Tommy. Just then the bell rang and Emily looked at Eleanor. "Crap, we have trig. See you at lunch?" Emily asked, starting to walk away. Tommy nodded and she smiled and turned to Eleanor. "Eleanor, are you coming?"

Eleanor turned to Tommy, "I'll see you at lunch, I guess." She said quickly before she went after Emily and hurried to her class.

As Eleanor walked with Emily toward their class, Eleanor couldn't help but suspect Emily. Emily seemed nice and Tommy seemed to trust her, but could Eleanor trust her? Eleanor's mind quickly answered with a no, but another voice suddenly popped out and mentioned that Emily never gave Eleanor a reason not to trust her. And now she didn't know what to think.

**************

When Tommy called Eleanor later that day and told her to meet him in front of Moe's, she did not expect to find him and Brad hugging at the middle of a street. To say she was confused was an understatement.

The moment Tommy saw Eleanor, he pulled away from the hug, told Brad goodbye and led Eleanor toward Moe's. They both entered the shop and saw Emily by the counter.

"Is there anybody else here?" Tommy asked as they got closer to Emily.

"No. The last customer left ten minutes ago," She answered, leaving her spot from behind the counter and walking toward a random table, cleaning it. "I—uh—saw you and Brad outside." She added, looking at Tommy with curiosity.

"Yeah, something really weird happened today," Tommy said, shaking his head as if he couldn't believe it himself.

"You mean besides you and Brad being bros?" Eleanor remarked, raising an eyebrow at him.

"After we left the shed Brad grabbed me and told me he found out I am an Evo and that he would turn me in." Tommy started and that immediately got the girls' attention.

"How did he find out?" Eleanor asked, her gaze flickering to Emily.

"He saw me at the shed. He said he wouldn't tell if I do something for him. He drove me to his house and when got to his house he asked me to make his stepdad disappear." Tommy continued

"And you did?" Eleanor couldn't help but ask.

"Of course I didn't." Tommy shook his head, "The moment Brad left me alone with his stepdad, I ran off, I swear."

"So what happened?" Now it was Emily's turn to ask.

"I don't know. I didn't want to go to my house so I went to take a Slurpee and next thing I know, Brad is hugging me and telling me his stepdad is gone."

"You're right, it is weird." Eleanor agreed.

"I don't have a right to be weirded out by you and Brad being bros, but... I am." Emily told Tommy as she turned over the 'OPEN' sign to 'CLOSE'.

"Yeah, me too. He punched me the other day, and now he's my best friend." Tommy said.

"The whole thing's so crazy. I mean, Brad thinks you made his stepdad disappear, but you swear you didn't." Emily grabbed two empty milkshake cups from a random table.

"Yeah, on my mother's eyes." Tommy said, cleaning a table.

"You won't say anything, right?" Eleanor suddenly asked Emily and Emily nodded.

"There's something else." Tommy started to say again, as they went behind the counter, "You can't tell anyone. I've been getting these texts from someone who I think is trying to protect me."

"From what?" Emily picked up an empty ice-cream bucket.

"I don't know. But whoever it is they are the reason I didn't die with Coach Lewis in that church fire." Tommy said and looked at Eleanor, who tensed up a bit.

Emily went to restock the ice-cream, but when she opened the lid her eyes widened and she took a step back. Both Eleanor and Tommy went immediately to see what wrong and Eleanor was surprised to see that the same purple flower that Tommy had made disappear was now in the ice-cream.

"When I touched the flower this morning, I was thinking about the first time I saw you. I-I ordered maple walnut." Tommy told them and Eleanor noticed that Emily opened a bucket of maple walnut ice-cream.

"Tommy, what were you thinking when you saved from being hit by the car?" Eleanor asked him.

"I just wanted you to be safe. I guess your house was the first place I thought you would be safe." Tommy answered and Eleanor suddenly smiled.

"That's it!" Eleanor and Emily exclaimed simultaneously. "Things go to whatever place you're thinking about when you touch them." Eleanor continued, "That's how your power works!"

"Do you remember what you were thinking about when you made those two creeps disappear?" Emily asked.

"Uh, I was..." Tommy tried to remember, "I was afraid I was being kidnapped, so I was thinking about I was the place they took me when I was a kid."

"Tommy, you know what that means?" Eleanor turned to look at him. Tommy shook his head no, "You're not like the others. Tommy, you're special.
