Chapter One
Why do our choices have such a great impact on our life? It seems like that sometimes, even the smallest things can change your whole perspective and cause you to make choices, the kind of choices that will turn your world upside down, that will help you find the real meaning of things, that will help you discover the most unusual and unexpected things.
Some call it destiny, some call it luck, a journey to find to most important answers, all except for one; why of all the people were we chosen for that?
"Me? Why?" Eleanor asked, her bright blue eyes staring into the eyes of the woman that was sitting in front of her. Pursing her lips, the woman got up from her chair and walked over to Eleanor, her blonde hair in a ponytail, the clothes she wore were formal like she was some kind of a businesswoman, her black heels clicking with every step she took.
"Why not?" The woman asked her, slightly frowning.
"I am not the right person for this kind of job. Choose Emma or Victoria, they can fit. They are both responsible, smart and polite and they basically know everything about Pinehearst High school." Eleanor argued ,trying to convince the green-eyed woman in front of her.
"You're responsible and smart, dear. Maybe not as polite as Queen Elizabeth but I'm sure you'll manage just as fine." The woman said but Eleanor scoffed.
"Tell that to Mr. Andrews. He still thinks I'm not responsible because of the one time I forgot to bring my homework. One time!"
"Eleanor," The woman sighed. "As your principle I want you to do that for me because I trust you more than Emma or Victoria and I know you will represent this school properly," Eleanor looked down, avoiding the woman's gaze, but a hand was put under her chin, making Eleanor look up again. "But as your mother I want you to try new things, make friends, go and hang out. You're almost sixteen and you can do so much more than sitting in your room and read all day."
"What's so wrong with reading," Eleanor crossed her arms, trying to change the subject of the conversation. Yet she wasn't so successful.
"Nothing." Her mother tried to reassure her, "But avoiding your surrounding is not the best way to live your life. There is a time when you need to make a choice; continue escaping reality or facing with it."
Eleanor stared at her mother for a few seconds before she opened her mouth and said, "Fine, I'll do it. I'll help the new kid."
"Great," her mother smiled, that kind of smile she always had when she was satisfied. She took out a picture of a boy with brown hair before she spoke again "His name is Tommy, Tommy Clark."
*********
Eleanor looked at the mirror she had in her locker, brushing her finger through her slightly messy, wavy blond hair in an attempt to fix it and make it at least look proper. She eventually gave up and lazily braided it. She adjusted her bleached-out denim jacket, along with the white top she was wearing beneath it and closed the locker's door.
She took a small breath and finally started walking towards the new boy, nervously biting her lower lip. She couldn't see his face because he was standing in front of his locker, opening it, but Eleanor was able to see and recognize his brown hair from afar. She began to regret accepting her mother's request, but it was too late. She had to do it.
Apparently, Tommy wasn't so new at Pinehearst High school, he had already been there for a week. Eleanor couldn't help but wonder if Tommy's arrival was just an excuse so Eleanor would try to make new friends.
She was standing behind him as he took something out of his locker, still not noticing Eleanor's presence. He seemed to be having problems with his locker, as he was holding a lot of books in one hand and trying to fix his locker with the other. Eleanor leaned over and gently tapped his shoulder with her finger. He seemed to be a bit surprised because he slightly jumped and turned over to look at her, dropping his books,in the process.
"Sorry," Eleanor apologized, bent down to pick his books. "I didn't mean to scare you. My name is Eleanor. You're Tommy, right?" Eleanor asked, picking one book and handing it over to Tommy. From a closer view, she could see Tommy's eyes, light green, like the color of a freshly cut grass.
He seemed to recover his surprise and he immediately straightened up, looking at Eleanor. "Uh, yeah. That's me," Tommy said, picking his books as well, looking at Eleanor with a confused look.
Eleanor smiled at him, though her heart was racing and she was still feeling nervous. "I'm Eleanor, nice to meet you," She introduced herself though Tommy still looked slightly confused. "I know it's really out of blue but since you joined midterm the principal thought that you might need help with catching up, or just showing you around the school," She explained, picking another book from the floor.
"Oh, I get it," Tommy murmured to himself, but Eleanor still was able to hear him. "It's very thoughtful, but I don't think I need some girl to guide me around, I can manage alone just fine."
Eleanor wasn't sure what to feel, offended or relieved. She was about to protest but then she remembered she didn't want to help Tommy in the first place.
"Alright then," There was an awkward silence between them and Eleanor decided that she should leave, but not before she handed him the last book and said, "I know it's a bit late to say but welcome to Pinehearst High school."
***********
If there was something Eleanor couldn't stand it would probably be lunch time. She hated how crowded it was in the cafeteria. Unlike most of the students, who found lunch as the best time to have a little break from studying and chatting with friends, Eleanor was sitting alone, quietly eating her lunch. It didn't bother her that she was sitting alone. On the contrary, she knew how uncomfortable she would feel if somebody sat next to her.
Eleanor was not a shy person, she just didn't trust people easily. Making Eleanor trust somebody was in her opinion as hard as climbing the Mount Everest.
It did bother her when she heard people talking about her. Eleanor wasn't stupid, she knew that being the principal's daughter would drown an unwanted attention, but there was nothing she could do about it.
All she wanted to do was going home and maybe read a good book. Luckily, she had only had one last class before the school day ended.
Just as she started to eat her lunch, Eleanor heard a loud voice.
"Watch where you're going, freshman!" She immediately recognized that voice. Brad, a very popular football player at Pinehearst High school. Glancing up from her food, Eleanor saw Brad and some of his friends gathering around some scared-looking freshman. Eleanor noticed that Brad's shirt was soaked with some brownish stain. She furrowed her eyebrow, feeling that something bad was going to happen.
"S-Sorry," freshman stuttered, but that only seemed to anger Brad. Eleanor understood what was happening as soon as she saw that the freshman was holding a Cola Can. Brad tightly grabbed the freshman's collar, glaring at him.
"Sorry? Sorry doesn't change the fact that you just ruined my new shirt, and since you're a freshman I need to teach you a lesson." Some guys around started chanting and cheering Brad and soon almost everyone in the cafeteria stopped to look at Brad and the freshman.
The freshman cowered in fear as Brad's friends started to surround him. Some student continued cheering Brad, and those who didn't, simply stared at the two. Glancing around, Eleanor saw that no one was going to do anything to stop the two.
"Leave him alone!" The words seemed to echo in the cafeteria and suddenly it became so awfully quiet. What frightened Eleanor the most was that every single pair of eyes in the cafeteria suddenly looked at her. Some looked at her with shock, some with surprise and some even with amusement. It didn't take long to Eleanor to realize that she had said those words.
Frightened, panicked and mostly shocked, Eleanor grabbed her things and stood to leave. And right when she was about to exit the cafeteria, Brad's voice made her freeze in her place.
"What did you say?"
Eleanor didn't answer, still frozen in her place.
"Didn't you hear me? I asked you a question."
Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, Eleanor felt a sudden urge to stand for herself. She turned around slowly, her eyes staring back at Brad.
Maybe she could do it. Maybe she could prove everyone she was more than the principal's daughter.
"I said–" Eleanor started to say, feeling more confident than ever, but soon all her confident washed away when a stern voice interrupted her. A voice that was all too familiar to her. Her mother's voice.
"What is going on here?" Her strict gaze was fixed on Eleanor.
"Principal Adams, we were just talking-" Brad started to say.
"I didn't ask you," Eleanor's mother interrupted again, tearing her gaze from Eleanor and looking at Brad. But when Eleanor's mother turned to look back at her daughter, Eleanor was long gone.
Eleanor was running away from the cafeteria. She didn't even know where she was running, she just wanted to get away from everyone. She was mad at herself, at how foolish she had been. And when Eleanor thought it couldn't get any worse she didn't know how wrong she was.
When Eleanor run around the corner she collided with something–someone. She found herself losing her balance, almost falling to the floor, when a hand grabbed her, preventing her from falling.
She glanced up to see who had caught her and she was surprised to see it was none other than the new boy who had caught her.
"Eleanor?" Tommy asked, looking completely confused.
"Leave me alone!" Eleanor snapped, yanking her arm from Tommy's grip.
She ran and ran till she finally found herself at the only place she could possibly calm down from that emotional roller coaster. There was a small park next to Pinehearst High school. It was Eleanor's way to relax (other than reading).
There was something special in that park. Perhaps it was the rustling of leaves or the chirping of the birds. But no matter whatever it was, Eleanor found this place peaceful.
Sitting on a nearby bench, Eleanor put her hand on face and took in a deep breath. She needed time. She needed to figure up what had happened to her. What was that burst of courage? Why had she suddenly defended that freshman, whom she didn't even know?
And for the first time in her life, Eleanor skipped a class. Maybe skipping class wasn't an uncommon thing at high school, but with Eleanor, it was a different story. She knew how furious her mother would be but she just needed some time to herself.
************
"Eleanor Rose Adams!" Eleanor's mother scolded loudly. At the moment Eleanor entered her house she didn't expect to be attacked by her mother's reprimands. Eleanor flinched and guiltily looked at her mother.
"Hey mom," Eleanor murmured and bit her lower lip nervously.
"Where were you? I wanted to ask you what had happened at the cafeteria, but when I asked Mrs. Davis where you were, I was told that you hadn't even shown up for her class."
Eleanor looked down, almost feeling shameful and careless. She knew this would happen but she didn't regret what she had done. Spending time at the park helped her to clean up her mind a bit.
Eleanor's mother sighed "When I told you to try new things I didn't think you would act in such an immature way."
Eleanor looked at her mother, "I know. I'm sorry, it won't happen again." Eleanor promised.
"Eleanor," Her mother started to say, her voice was much gentler and softer than before. "What happened in the cafeteria? Does it have anything to do with your skipping?"
"No!" Eleanor said quickly, though she immediately regretted it. Why did she lie to her mother? Maybe Eleanor didn't want her mother to know. Maybe Eleanor was afraid of what her mother might do, or what people might think. Maybe for once in her life she wanted to deal with something without her mother's intervention.
"I wasn't feeling very well and I needed fresh air," Eleanor tried to shrug it off. It wasn't a complete lie. After she had run out of the cafeteria she felt confused and dizzy.
Eleanor's mother stared at her as if trying to decide something. She suddenly hugged Eleanor tightly. "Whenever something bothers you, I want you to tell me. Okay?"
"Okay, I promise." Eleanor hugged her mother back. And even though Eleanor made a promise to her mother she wasn't sure she could keep it.
