Chapter Five

It was already evening and the stars slowly started to fill out the dark night sky. Eleanor tore her gaze from the window and looked at Tommy, who in the meanwhile, was keeping looking back and forth behind her. He barely said something since they arrived at Moe's, almost like Eleanor wasn't there. Was he ignoring her? She hadn't done anything wrong, had she?

"She seems nice," Tommy mumbled mostly to himself. He was still not looking at Eleanor and it bothered her. Eleanor turned her head to where Tommy was staring. She felt as if her heart was sinking as she saw he was staring at Emily Duval, but then the feeling was replaced with anger.

"How would you know that? Have you ever even talked to her?" Eleanor retorted and Tommy looked at Eleanor like he had just now found out she was there.

"No, but I've seen her around the school." Was all he replayed, which didn't help to calm Eleanor's anger.

"I don't like her," Eleanor said honestly, leaning away from Tommy's gaze.

"Why?" Tommy asked and Eleanor could practically hear him frowning even without looking at him.

"I know people like her. All they ever do is think about themselves, and that's why people get hurt." Eleanor almost wanted to add that this was why she had gotten hurt, yet she stopped herself from saying that.

"But you don't know her," That made Eleanor to look at Tommy and for the first time she glared at him.

"And so do you, so why do you defend her when you don't even know her?" Tommy stayed quiet, which was more than enough to Eleanor. She let out an annoyed sigh as if she didn't know why she expected otherwise.

"Never mind. Forget it. I'm going home." Eleanor stated, getting up from the table. She grabbed her bag and stormed out of the shop, pretending to ignore Tommy who shouted after her. By his voice, she knew he wasn't far behind her. She didn't stop, she simply walked faster.

Her vision was beginning to be slightly blurry as she felt hot tears in the corners of her eyes but she refused to let them fell. She felt betrayed and angry.

Without even looking around, she started to cross the road, trying to get away from Moe's and Tommy. She barely had a second to realize her mistake when she saw a strong flash of light and heard a loud honk of a car. She froze in utter fear and horror, not being able to move from the car's way. She raised her hands in front of her face as if they were enough to protect her and shut her eyes tightly.

Next thing Eleanor heard was a loud screech sound and a panicked voice shouting her name.

Eleanor waited for the pain to come but it never did. Only when she opened her eyes she realized that someone was holding her. The car that had just been about to hit Eleanor was nowhere to be seen. In fact, when Eleanor looked around she saw that she wasn't even at the same street anymore.

She was now standing in front of her own house. The confusion soon replaced the horror and the fear that had filled her just a few seconds ago. How did it happen? What happened?

Eleanor tilted her head to look at the person that was still holding her. Much to her shock, she was met with a very familiar pair of light green eyes. It was Tommy.

It didn't make any sense. How was it possible? One moment Eleanor was about to be run over and the next she was right in front of her house. Then, the realization dawned on her. There was only one way it could have been possible.

Eleanor broke herself free from Tommy's grip, taking one step away from him. "You–You're," She couldn't even bring herself to say it. She still couldn't believe it. It all hit her like a ton of bricks.

"You're an Evo," She finally forced herself to say it. Her voice wasn't full of anger or fear, she was just overwhelmed. Her head was spinning and she felt a little dizzy but she tried to forget about it.

Tommy took a step forward, trying to get closer to Eleanor but she stepped away from him again. "Please don't freak out!" Tommy pleaded. It was the first time since the two had met that Eleanor saw Tommy looking so scared, terrified even. "I didn't know what else to do. That car was going to hit you! I couldn't let you get hurt! I just..." Tommy's words trailed off as he realized Eleanor was staring at him with a look that seemed more of a shock than fear.

"You saved me," She said it so quietly it was almost a whisper but she knew Tommy heard her. "You saved my life," She repeated, a bit louder this time, her eyes never once left Tommy's eyes. She suddenly took a big step towards Tommy and flung her arms around his neck, her head was buried in his neck.

"Thank you." Her voice was slightly muffled. Tommy hugged her back and when they pulled away Eleanor could see the relief in his eyes. She glanced back at her house and then at Tommy. "Maybe we should get inside my house. I'm just... a little confused now. More than a little, actually." Eleanor suggested, looking at Tommy with a small grin.

The moment Eleanor entered her house she was greeted by loud happy barks and a very jumpy golden dog. She quickly petted her dog and went to the kitchen to grab a glass of water. She noticed that on the fridge was taped a small yellow note that said : "Eleanor, your mother and I went out to catch up with some old friends. We will return around 22:00. There is food in the fridge but since I know your mother's cooking skills I left you some money to buy whatever you want. –Dad"

Eleanor smiled at the note and walked over to Tommy, who was sitting on the big brown couch in the living room. The moment Eleanor sat on the couch, the urge to ask Tommy dozens of questions that had been nagging her mind only got stronger. But when Eleanor opened her mouth to speak, only one question went up on her mind. "How did you do it?"

Tommy looked uncomfortable for a moment before he answered, "I don't know what happens when I... I'm pretty sure whatever I touch just like, ceases to exist."

"Well, I'm still here, right?" Eleanor replied with a smile, trying to lighten up the mood a bit. Tommy smiled a tiny smile but it was only a tug of his lips and it was soon replaced with a frown.

"But you could have ended up in the middle of the ocean, or falling into a volcano or even ended up on the moon. My power is dangerous. You could have died because of me."

"I would have died for sure if you hadn't saved me." Eleanor persisted. She was now seeing a new side in Tommy. She understood why, though. Tommy was afraid of his power, and because of his power he–along with the rest of the Evos around the world–was one of the hunted.

"Did anybody else find out about it?" Eleanor asked again. The nagging questions were back again but Eleanor didn't want to overflow Tommy with them.

"Right now the only one who knows, besides you, is my mom." Tommy told Eleanor, his gaze was down as if he was ashamed of something. "My power is the reason we have always been moving a lot. I can't control it."

"Why you never told me?" Tommy glanced up back at Eleanor and pursed his lips before he spoke again.

"Being an Evo is not something to be proud of. It's dangerous. People hate us all around the world, you saw what happened in New York. June 13th changed everything. When my mother and I went into hiding I knew I couldn't expose myself no matter what." He explained and Eleanor understood.

"I won't tell anybody," Eleanor promised Tommy, putting her hand on his shoulder. "You can trust me."

Tommy smiled in a way that warmed her heart, but then he looked confused like he had just remembered something.

"When you said you know people like Emily, what did you mean?" Tommy asked, making Eleanor frown at the sudden change of the conversation.

"Do you remember the other day when Bella asked me to join the cheerleading group?" Eleanor started and Tommy nodded, "The truth is that Bella..." Eleanor took a breath. "Bella was my best friend. She was the smartest and kindest girl I'd ever known but I was too naive to think that people don't change."

Eleanor wanted to stop talking but at the same time, she wondered what would it be like to let some of the pain out. "Bella used to have some kind of an appearance. She was the perfect girl. Perfect look, perfect grades and perfect friends, in which I wasn't included. But she became arrogant and careless and she messed up, yet she wanted to keep her perfect image..."

Eleanor played with her fingers restlessly. She didn't know if she could let it all out, but she knew she could at least try. "She decided to put the blame on me, saying that we both had fought and I was the reason for her low grades, that I was trying to hurt her since we weren't friends anymore. She said that since my mother is the principal, my mother used her position to influence the teachers. Of course, it was a lie, but who do you think people believed?"

This time, Tommy put his hand over Eleanor's shoulder, looking at her with sympathy. "I believe you." He declared and she smiled and thanked him.

"I felt guilty of not telling you all this time who I really am. But now, I kinda feel better after telling you the truth. Everything I've been through." Tommy confessed after awhile. Eleanor nodded lightly, though she wasn't sure if she felt better after talking to Tommy about everything that had happened to her. It didn't change the past. Nothing could.

"Have you ever met another Evo?" For a moment Eleanor actually wondered if she annoyed Tommy or made him feel uncomfortable with all of her questions, only when she looked back at Tommy she saw that it didn't seem to bother him that much.

"No, at least, not that I know of," Tommy shook his head. "But I heard about that Evo group thing at a church in Chicago. It's in few days."

"Well, maybe you should go," Eleanor suggested, "Maybe someone there could give you some advice or help you out a little."

Tommy had a look on his face that seemed like he was thinking about it seriously. "Yeah," he then said, "Maybe I should."
