TWENTY-SIX
"My dearest brother,
"I am so sorry I lied to you. I am sorry I did not tell you about my plan to fake my own death. I am sorry I got mixed in with the wrong people.
"I've spent the last twenty years trying to right myself. Forming this underground, as I am sure Elle has already told you about, was a way I found for me to still be able to help, even under the cover of death.
"I am planning to make my return into society, now that the Dark Lord is gone. I just want to know one thing before I do: Do you think you could ever forgive me? We have much to discuss, but I understand if you do not want to see me.
"I know you are probably going to read this letter to the Weasley family. I do not blame you; they've been there for you when your real blood [me] wasn't. So, I say this to them, I will explain everything in great detail once I have made my full reemergence into society.
"I will explain everything to you as well. Please, write a response and give it to Elle. She will know what to do.
"Signed R.A.B," Dad read to us.
Everyone was silent, expressions solemn, even after Dad had finished. For a long time, no one said anything. Not even I did, though I had already known all of the information in the letter. I mean, what can you say? I scanned the faces of everyone in the room. Disbelief was evident on everyone's face. I'm sure this is how my face looked when Regulus told me who he was.
"I just can't believe this," Dad finally announced in a disbelieving voice.
"I can't either," Arthur agreed, looking at he and Molly's intertwined hands.
"I don't think any of us can," Bill added, looking to Fleur, his arm tightening around her waist.
"So, the man who stole Voldemort's locket is alive? We'll get to meet him?" Harry asked quietly, staring at Dad.
"Yes, Harry," I answered, grabbing Fred's hand.
"Bloody hell," Ron mumbled from beside Harry.
Draco was silent during all of this. He was holding Sam's hand and staring at her freshly manicured nails. He was frowning and his brow was furrowed. He looked as if he was in deep thought. He probably is, actually.
"What's wrong, Draco?" I inquired after a moment. I shifted slightly while I waited for his response. The arm of the couch is not a good place to sit for long periods of time....
"I just can't believe that he managed to evade the Dark Lord and all of the Death Eaters that were probably sent after him. That takes real skill. He definitely has my respect," he explained, looking up at me.
I smiled softly. I'm glad that Draco is showing everyone else the Draco he showed me, all the way back in my sixth year.
Everyone sat in a tense silence until Charlie stood up. "Mum, Dad, I'm afraid I must be getting back. I need to check on the dragons before I go to bed and it's already late."
"Okay, dear. Be careful please," Molly answered, standing up and giving him a hug.
"I will, Mum. I promise."
He turned towards Fred and I. "Congratulations again, you two."
Fred grinned his Cheshire grin as he replied, "Thanks, Charlie."
"Yeah, thank you," I added, standing up.
Charlie went around the room and said his goodbyes before he apparated out. Percy and Audrey were next to say their goodbyes. They congratulated Fred and I once more before they too apparated. Bill and Fleur were after them, giving hugs and telling everyone goodbye. They also congratulated us once more. Ginny and Harry left at the same time Hermione and Ron did. They all congratulated us too. George left with Callie through the Floo Network, leaving Fred and I with Molly and Arthur.
"Thank you for the delicious meal," I thanked Molly.
She smiled warmly as she responded, "Of course! Thank you for coming!"
Arthur gave me and Fred a hug, as did Molly.
"Mind if I come around to your flat tomorrow after lunch to do some more wedding planning?" She asked, looking between Fred and I excitedly.
"Of course not, Mum!" Fred exclaimed. Clearly he doesn't know what he's getting us into. Don't get me wrong, I love Molly to death and I'm excited to get married, but I don't want to be trapped at a table for hours talking about what kind of flowers will be in my bouquet.
I smiled and nodded my agreement.
"Fantastic! I'll see you two tomorrow then!" beamed Molly as she hugged us one last time.
"See you tomorrow!" I told her before Fred grabbed my hand and apparated back to the flat.
Fred didn't even give me a chance to go to my own room when we got back to the flat. He pulled me into his room and gave me shirt and sweatpants of his to change into.
Rolling my eyes with a smile, I went into his bathroom to change.
I left my change of clothes on his vanity before going back out, looking homeless in baggy sweatpants and an oversized shirt. Fred was relaxing on his bed, wearing nothing but shorts.
I heard scratching at the door. Grinning, I went over to his door and opened it, letting the little black puppy in. He jumped up on the bed, immediately going to Fred's side.
I got into bed beside him, curling into Fred's side.
I started petting the puppy. "We need a name for this little fella," I told Fred.
Fred started petting him too as he responded, "You're right. What do you want to name him?"
I shrugged as I kept petting him. "I dunno."
"How about Ben?"
The puppy buried his head in the covers and stretched. I could feel him licking his paw under the covers.
"Let's ask him. Do you like the name Ben?" I asked the puppy. His head shot up and he cocked his head at me.
I smiled. "He seems like a Ben. And it seems he likes it," I laughed as I shifted to pet the puppy with my other hand.
"Ben it is!" Fred exclaimed, putting an arm around my shoulders and petting Ben with his other hand.
I smiled as I put my head on Fred's chest. Each time our hands brushed while we were petting Ben, I felt the familiar sparks shoot up my arm.
Now this is perfection: laying in bed with my fiancé, petting our puppy, with a ring on the fourth finger of my left hand.
