THIRTY-TWO
"Mum, you cannot die on us!"
I clinched Fred's hand as he said this, tears streaming down my face.
It's funny, isn't it? How one minute everything can be perfect and then the next everything is as far from perfect as it can be?
I thought back to this morning...
——
"Elle, wake up!"
"One more minute," I begged Sammy.
"No. We have a ton to do today! Your hair, your makeup, getting you in your dress!"
I groaned and sat up. "Fine."
Sam was grinning triumphantly. She pulled me out of bed and shoved me in the bathroom. "Change into that robe! Don't shower, your hair will do better if it's a day or two old."
"Okay," I responded with a yawn, taking off my pajamas and changing into the robe as she instructed.
The wedding is today and so Sammy, Hermione, Ginny, Fleur and I all stayed the night at the Burrow as to get an early start this morning.
I opened the door after putting a charm on my hair to control it somewhat. I was greeted with the sight of all of my bridesmaids, milling around in the bedroom Sammy and I had slept in last night.
"There's the bride! Makeup first!" Ginny exclaimed, patting the back of a chair that was seating in front of a vanity.
I mentally groaned before sitting down. Ginny spun my chair around. She examined my face, a look of concentration on hers.
"Close your eyes," she ordered.
For nearly an hour, Ginny poked and prodded on my face. Finally, she stepped back, a triumphant smile on her face.
"Okay, Sam, she's all yours now."
Sammy stepped up, her wand in her hand. She said a charm so that my hair became straight, before she started pulling it back and putting Bobby pins in.
She left a couple of strands out on each side. Finally, she charmed those stands into perfect curls.
Once she handed me the mirror, I seen that she had put my hair in a messy back bun, only more elaborate than the casual messy bun.
"Okay, time to get into your dress!" Hermione said excitedly, already pulling my dress out of its plastic cover.
I took off the robe and held still as they laced the dress up.
Ginny did all of the others' makeup before having Fleur do hers. Sam and I did the others' hair at the same time, to speed things up.
We put theirs in a side fishtail braid, leaving some strands out to curl.
I did Sam's before it was time for them to get into their dresses. I went around to each of them, zipping them up.
Finally, we were ready. Molly ordered us to stay up here until she told us she was ready.
We didn't have to wait long before we heard Molly's flats on the steps outside of the room. "Okay, girls, time to go!"
We made our way downstairs. Sammy went to George, Hermione went to Charlie, Ginny to Bill, and Fleur to Ron.
Fleur and Ron lined up first, with Ginny and Bill behind them. Hermione and Charlie we're behind them and Sammy and George behind them.
I was last, waiting for Dad to come. When he did, I seen tears in his eyes. "You look wonderful," he whispered as I took his arm.
"Thank you, Dad," I responded. I was grateful now that the girls had kept me busy enough all morning that I didn't have time to dwell on the fact that my mum wasn't here to help with everything. I still tried to push it away, knowing she wouldn't want me to be sad on my wedding day.
The music started, so Callie started teetering down the isle, dropping blue rose petals as she went.
The pairs went down the aisle, before Dad and I stepped up to the curtain.
"MUM!" We heard someone scream. Before I could do anything else, I transfigured my dress into something I could actually move in. I ran out, greeted immediately by Molly on the ground, in the middle of the aisle.
"Molly!" I exclaimed, rushing forward. I knelt on the ground beside her, checking her pulse.
Her pulse was weak and irregular. Okay. So it's something cardiovascular. That narrows it down somewhat.
"Dear..." came Molly's weak voice.
"Mol? It's me, Elle. Can you tell me if you're feeling any pain?"
"Arm," She responded weakly.
I nodded. Pain in the limbs, weak, irregular pulse... heart attack.
Spells started flooding my mind, so I started performing them to get her stable.
"I've called St. Mungo's; they're on their way!" Someone in the crowd announced.
Good. She needs to be in a hospital. Who knows what damage this did to her heart.
I kept performing spells, checking her pulse every so often.
Once her pulse was stable, I checked everything else over to make sure she hadn't broken anything in her fall.
The Saint Mungo's people finally arrived, taking her out of my hands. One healer asked me to come with them and tell them everything I did and what happened.
I explained everything on the way to Saint Mungo's. The healer nodded, occasionally writing things down.
"Don't worry, miss. She'll be okay. You did good. Are you a new healer?"
"I got licensed a little over a year ago," I informed him, looking at my hands in my lap.
At Saint Mungo's, they ordered me to stay in the corridor and wait for the rest of the family. I did so. Everyone had transfigured their nice clothes as well, probably before they apparated here.
Fred managed to find me in the chaos. He wrapped his arms around me and buried his face in my hair.
I didn't care. There wouldn't be a wedding today anyway and Fred was probably hurting, worried for his mum.
I wrapped my arms around him as well and started rubbing his back. We stood like this until a healer found us and told us that we could go in and see her. He eyed us disdainfully when all of us made our way into her room at the same time.
——
After a few hours, Molly sent multiple people home to get some rest before they came back the next morning.
At one in the morning, Fred and I (we'd stayed much to Molly's protest) were woken up by a steady beep coming from Molly's heart monitor.
She was flatlining.
"Mum, you cannot die on us!"
I clinched Fred's hand as he said this, tears streaming down my face.
I didn't realize the tears had started already.
Before I had gotten up to stand beside Fred, I had yelled out the door for a healer.
One did before long and ushered us out of the room.
Fred and I both started pacing, worried about Molly. She was fine when we went to sleep, now she's flatlining!
Please, Molly, don't die on us.
