XXVII
I gasped for air, sitting up. I saw Zion beside me, coming to as well.
I reached over, grabbing him as he laughed so hard he began coughing.
"Who saved who this time?" I said, smiling at him as he stared back at me, pride in his eyes. Seeing him smile made my heart flutter and for once, the horrible images didn't resurface. Seizing the moment, I pressed my lips against his in a quick kiss that sent my entire body buzzing with electricity. All I cared about in that moment was that he was okay. I hadn't even realized we had an audience until I heard someone dramatic clearing their throat.
"Let me know when you guys are done," Jeremy said, gagging.
"Just wait Jeremy. That'll be you and Bonnie soon," she teased, winking at me.
"Well, it seems we all made it out of the that test in one piece," Edward commented, impressed.
"Wait, who's that?" Zion asked me, nodding over to Esat who was staring at us with no shame.
"My sister," I said and his eyes widened in shock.
"Edward made her keep it a secret. Don't be mad at her," Esat said, smiling at me. I mouthed a thank you before returning the smile. As someone known for lying and hiding thing, I appreciated any out I could get.
"Don't get too comfortable. I'll be telling your mother you snuck off without telling her," Edward warned.
"As long as I'm with you, she won't mind," she said, smiling sweetly at Edward as she threw his threat back at him.
"You know how dangerous it is for you to be out here," he said sternly.
"Give me a break. I bet Saron didn't tell her mother before she came out here, did you Saron?"
I choked on my spit, not expecting her question. I opened my mouth to respond but finding nothing to say, I closed it. Everyone else shifted uncomfortably until Star broke the awkward silence with, "We should probably get going."
"How close are we to seeing the witch?" Tom asked, clearing his throat awkwardly.
"A day's journey if we hurry," Edward replied.
"Since we have Esat, we don't even have to fight anymore. She can just stop time and we can run away," Jeremy said confidently.
"You told them your power?" Edward said, glaring at Esat angrily.
"They won't tell anyone. I trust them."
"You barely know them," Edward snapped.
"They won't tell anyone, Edward. We're wasting time," I said, annoyed.
"It'll be faster if we use our powers instead of walking," Zion offered.
We all nodded, ready to end this trip and see the witch.
"Very well. Esat, you're with me. Everyone, stay in twos. Incase anything happens, we need to protect one another."
"I'll stay on the ground with you," I said to Zion. He nodded before changing to his werewolf form. I did the same, taking a bit longer than him due to my limited changes. Star and Joel took the air. Tom and Jeremy as well. Crexus grouped with Edward and Esat since he couldn't keep up with me and Zion on the ground in our werewolf forms. Esat stood, gawking at my werewolf form until Edward physically picked her up and placed her on his back.
I smiled at her, well I tried to. A smile in my werewolf form is more threatening than heartwarming due to my razor sharp teeth but she got the message. I took off running, Zion by my side. I looked at him to the side, catching his eye before using my vampire powers to speed up faster. Howling, he too sped up until he caught up to my pace. We were traveling easily much faster than we had been the past two days since we were no longer walking.
I caught a rabbit scurry around a nearby tree, my predatorily instincts taking over as I leapt towards it, devouring it in one bite. Zion's hunger roared at the sight of me satisfying my hunger and went racing forward until he caught a racoon speaking about. He devoured it, letting out a loud belch that sounded more like a grunt. It wasn't much, but it was enough to rejuvenate us to go faster.
Stop at the next pond
I looked forward, noticing the pond a couple kilometers away, reaching it quickly and stopping. I quickly shifted back to my human form as Zion watched me, perplexed as to why I had stopped.
"It's getting dark," I said, pointing at the darkening skies that we could see through the small openings in the large branches of the trees towering over us.
Grumbling in understanding, he shifted back to his human form as well as we waited for the others to arrive. Joel and Star came first, landing soundlessly beside us. Jeremy and Tom however came crashing down, knocking us all off balance as we went tumbling to the ground, laughing so hard I'm sure the whole forest could hear us. Crexus then appeared by my side seemingly out of nowhere before Edward landed lightly, extending his wing down for Esat to slide off.
"I found some overturned trees not too far off. It's shielded by trees so we should be safe there. The hole is big enough for all of us to fit," Edward offered.
We followed his lead, walking through the forest silently. Something about this forest at night gave me a creepy feeling that was unsettling.
Soon, we reached the shelter stepping into the hole and brushing away the leaves that covered the floor. Edward reached into his pack, pulling out a couple blood bags and sandwiches and we ate quickly before dividing the watch amongst one another. This time, I chose last watch, curling up into a ball and drifting off into sleep.
"Saron," a voice hissed in my ear.
"Get out of my head," I whispered, thinking it was the dark magic.
I felt a slap across my cheek, causing me to jump up.
"Hey," Esat said, peering at me in the darkness.
"Is it my watch?" I groaned.
"No, but-"
"Are we in danger?" I asked, rubbing my eyes as we sat up.
"No."
"Then why the hell am I awake?" I asked, curling my lips in annoyance as I felt the last of my sleep fading away.
"I got bored."
"You could've woken up anyone else."
"You know why I woke you up," she said, giving me an obvious look.
"Fine," I said, sitting up. My sleep was already disturbed and I'd be lying if a part of me didn't want to know more about her.
"So Zion's your mate?"
"Yes."
"Your friends are so cool. My friends back home are not interesting at all."
"Yeah, I got lucky with them," I said, looking over at them proudly.
"Who is Crexus?"
"He's my bodyguard. He's more a friend now."
"OMG you have a body guard," she shrieked excitedly.
Shushing her I said, "Keep it down. You'll wake everyone up."
"What's your mother like?"
I snapped my head around, glaring at her as my mouth went dry.
"Sorry, are you not close with your mom?"
"She's dead."
"Oh, I'm so sorry. Edward didn't tell me-" her face twisting into one of sorrow.
"It's fine. What's your mom like?"
"Super annoying and overprotective. I understand why though."
"Overprotective isn't always bad. It's how you know she cares."
"Yeah, I guess," she said, smirking.
"I wasn't expecting to ever meet you," I admitted.
"I didn't either! I begged Edward to take me to see you but he refused. When I got the opportunity, I wasn't going to let it pass."
"Wait, how long have you known about me?"
"Five years ago. He's not as secretive as he thinks he is. I found out on my own but he always acted like I was making up stories. He finally admitted it a couple months ago."
"Wait, did Edward raise you?" I said, putting the pieces together.
"I wouldn't say raised, but he was definitely around when I needed him."
Her words were a punch to the gut, but I smiled brightly at her anyways. That explains why he was so hellbent on protecting her. He had actually raised her. She was more a daughter to him than I was. Why was she worth sticking around for and not me?
I blinked back tears as I looked away, pretending to find something on the ground interesting as I circled the dirt with my fingers absentmindedly.
"I heard what you did. Edward told me."
"What do you mean?" I said, looking up at her confused.
"How you let Edward and Saira escape so they wouldn't find out about me and let them torture you."
I nodded, swallowing the images that were starting to resurface as I asked her another question to distract myself, "If Edward worked so hard to keep you a secret, how did they even find out about you?"
"I have no idea."
Curling up in a ball, she closed her eyes as she said, "It's your watch. I'm going to sleep now."
"I'm glad I met you," I heard her whisper faintly. It was so faint, I don't think she meant to say it out loud. I smiled, saying nothing back. It did feel good to have family, a real sister. Even if I might never see her again after this.
