IX

I smiled at their gasps of surprise as I stood up and felt Zion's hand grip mine tightly as he pulled me into the Cafeteria.

"That's her mate?" I heard Amy whisper to Bea as I walked away.

"That's my bestfriend guys!" Star yelled in excitement before rushing up to me. I laughed, amused by her excitement.

"That was badass," said Joel, grinning at me.

Tom however, continued to watch me with caution.

"Lighten up Tom. I didn't kill them." I said, rolling my eyes at him.

"Yeah, lighten up Tom," Jeremy repeated, throwing his arm around him playfully.

He forced a smile without breaking his gaze from me.

"Let the boys get the food. Star let's find a table." I grabbed her arm, pulling her through the weaves of students before the boys could protest. The Cafeteria was packed, more than usual today. We finally found a table near the center, surrounded by the chatter of the students around us.

"Why is it so packed today?" I asked her in confusion.

"Today was the last day of skill assessments. Everyone is probably starving."

I frowned, thinking back to my own skill assessment.

"How has class been?" I asked, curiously.

"Boring as usual. We're learning to fight better in angel class though. I'd definitely beat your ass now."

"You wish," I said, scoffing.

"Next time, you guys are getting the food," Jeremy complained before bringing down a heavy platter of food before us.

"No way! You guys outnumber us," Star stated, motioning to the four of them vs. the two of us.

"Well, one of you has super strength so I think it's fair," Zion pointed out, looking at me.

"Did any of you guys take skill assessments?" I asked, remembering back to what Star told me.

Tom and Joel looked at one another before a smile erupted on each of their faces.

I raised my eye before looking to Jeremy for an explanation.

"They're both fourth years now," Star explained.

"Wow congrats. I'm proud of you two. I wish I was there to support you guys," I said sadly, smiling brightly at them both. A part of me couldn't help but feel a ting of jealousy. They were all attending class, honing their skills, and enjoying their time at the Academy while I was missing it all.

"Hey Saron?" asked Jeremy

"What?" I replied, downing a blood bag.

"How does it feel to be a first year?"

I smiled before chucking a bag of chips at his face with such force, the bag popped once it hit his face causing the chips to explode onto him.

"Hey! I was just kidding" Jeremy yelled in surprise, laughing as he dusted himself off.

"My girl doesn't play," Zion said, chuckling as he threw his arm over my shoulder proudly.

"I'm telling the Headmaster to move me up with you guys."

"Why stop at a second year? Everyone knows you're better than anyone here," Star asked.

"Speak for yourself," Tom said, flexing his muscles.

"I want to be with you and Jer. It's no fun alone."

Star smiled at my response as she shoved a wing into her mouth, sucking the meat off before pulling the bare bone out.

"You're an animal," Joel said, watching her tear apart the wing easily.

She elbowed him before continuing to eat.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" a scream pierced through the Cafteria, causing all the chatter to subside as we jumped from our seats to see what happened.

I flitted to the sound in a second, finding myself looking at the lifeless body of a small Asian girl, eyes rolled back so all you could see was the white. Clutching her body was a blonde girl with tears streaming down her face as she looked at me with her big brown eyes.

"What happened?" demanded a tall, lanky boy beside me as he stared at her with blood red eyes. He was a vampire. I looked around to find a crowd of people around us, vampires, witches, fairies, werewolves, etc. as we all waited for an explanation.

"I-I don't know." she stuttered, looking down at the girl as she kept crying.

"We were eating and everything was fine then she just fell out of her seat onto the ground. She just stopped breathing," a chubby, brown haired boy with glasses spoke up.

A girl with black hair and blue eyes stepped forward, forcing herself through the crowd. She was a witch. She kneeled before the girl before closing her eyes and placing her hand on the girl's forehead. We watched and waited until the girl opened her eyes. She stood up quickly before shooting a sympathetic glance at the girl.

"I'm sorry. She's gone."

She walked back through the crowd and out of sight without another word. I felt Zion's hand slip into mine and looked up at him, suddenly aware he was beside me.

"You should try."

I hesitantly stepped forward before looking up at the girl, her face wet with tears.

"What's your name?"

"Ursa."

"Ursa, I'm Saron. I'm going to try to see what happened to your friend," I said, shooting her a sad smile.

She smiled before carefully shifting the girl into my arms. I laid the girls head in my lap before placing both of my palms on each side of her face and attempting to jump into her mind.

"BAER, TELL ME WHAT HE SAID!" Ursa insisted, pulling on her arm.

"He said he liked me then walked away."

"WHATTTT?! Did you at least get his number?"

"Ursa, you know Baer's way too shy to ask him," the chubby boy said, snorting.

"Shut up Matt. That's why you failed your skill assessment," Baer snapped back, shoving the platter onto his fingers.

"Too soon," he said, clutching his heart dramatically.

"Baer, you need to tell him you like him to- Baer? BAER?!" Ursa screamed, grabbing Baer as she crashed out of her seat to the ground.

I stepped forward, touching Baer from where I was standing in her mind, watching the memory happen. I felt a jolt of pain course through my body, causing me to scream. I could feel every joint in her body stiffen, the blood stop coursing as she was dying from the inside out. I gasped for air, unable to breathe, crumbling down to my knees as I lost ability to move my joints. I felt myself fading quickly.

"This is just the beginning," I heard a voice hiss as I lost consciousness.

"Saron?" Ursa screamed at me, shaking me.

My eyes flew open to find myself seated on the ground, Baer's lifeless body still in my lap and Ursa staring at me, confused. I reached down, shutting her eyelids that were staring blankly up at me before picking her up and placing her on an empty table beside us.

I could feel everyone's eyes on me as I remained silent. I walked over to Ursa, grabbing her hand before saying, "I'm sorry. She's dead. She went peacefully."

I rushed away quickly with my head bowed, avoiding the gazes and the whispers around me. I shuddered at the memory of the painful way she had left the world. My eyes pricked with tears, overwhelmed by the memory of her emotions. The helplessness. The desperation. The confusion. She didn't deserve that type of death. The voice I had heard just before I blacked out sent a shiver down my spine. This is just the beginning? Of what?

I stopped as soon as I got to the end of the Cafeteria, looking back to find the same crowd, still clustered where the girl had fallen.

"Saron, wait up!" Star yelled, sprinting up to me breathing hard.

"Not. Everyone. Has. Vampire. Speed," she huffed, leaning onto me as she caught her breath.

"Sorry."

"What did you see?"

"Nothing."

"Saron, I know you well enough to know when you're lying."

"What happened?" Zion said, behind me causing me to jump in surprise.

"Not here," I said, noticing a few eyes still lingering on me.

"Follow me," I said to Zion before grabbing Star's arm and racing away. I spotted Tom on our path, grabbing his hand and I darted both of them out of the Cafeteria with me in seconds landing in the first empty hallway I found.

I steadied my breathing as we waited for the others.

"Now you know how I felt," Star said, watching me take ragged breaths.

Before I had time to recover, I felt Jeremy crash into me as the boys caught up, knocking me to the ground.

"Shit. Sorry Saron," Jeremy apologized, holding out his hand and helping me up.

"Smooth Zion."

He held his hands up defensively while fighting a smile that was erupting on his face.

"So what happened?" Tom asked.

"I saw and felt everything from her last moments."

"How did she just die?" Joel asked.

"I'm not sure. Her body just shut down and she couldn't do anything about it."

"Is there anything else?" Zion asked, stepping towards me.

"No." I wasn't sure what I had heard. For all I know, I could've imagined it. Knowing my friends, they'd stress their selves out on what could be just my mind playing tricks on me.

"We should get back. It's late," I said, clearing my throat to break the silence.

"Saron will meet you guys there," Zion said, grabbing my hand and pulling me away before I could protest.

I opened my mouth to ask what was wrong but he flitted us away before I could break the words. When we finally landed, I found myself in a field with beautiful flowers blooming every which way. I found benches scattered across the field, letting me know this was one of the parks they had inside the Academy. I crouched down, letting my hand cup the flower that grew taller, flourishing from my touch. I closed my eyes as I felt the jolt of magic as me and the Earth became one at the contact.

"Ahem."

I opened my eyes, turning around to remember Zion was still there.

"What's wrong?" I asked, noticing the grim expression on his face.

"What happened when you were inside that girl's head?"

"Nothing happ-"

"Don't lie to me Saron."

I stared at him silently, noticing his eyes were now red as he was getting agitated.

"I felt your fear and pain through our mate bond when you were in her head. You can lie to the others but not to me. You saw something. What did you see?"

I sighed before telling him.

"Right before I died..I mean she died, I heard a voice. It said this is just the beginning. I wasn't sure if I had imagined it and I didn't want to worry you unless I was sure it was a threat."

His eyes became laced with worry as he started pacing around the field wordlessly. Stupid mate bond. This is exactly what I was avoiding.

I could feel the change in the air as he became more distressed and anger radiate throughout his body. I walked towards him, grabbing his hand which he wriggled out of my grasp.

"Zion." I grabbed his cheek, facing him towards me as electricity charged between us and I could feel him warming to my touch.

"This wasn't an accident. She was murdered."

"We will figure out who killed her."

"How? We know nothing about this. We should leave it to the Headmaster."

"No, let's tell Edward. He probably knows something about this."

"You would trust a man you barely know over the Headmaster?!" He stepped back, shaking his head incredulously.

"What is your problem? Edward has done nothing to you and yet, you refuse to give him a chance," I snapped back, scowling.

"Something is off about him, Saron. You have to believe me."

"Zion, stop! You sound ridiculous. He's my father and I may not know him but in the little time I have, he's proven himself. He is the only person here who understands me and has the most experience when it comes to this kind of thing. I don't expect you to understand. If we don't figure it out, I'll tell the Headmaster myself."

I darted away as far as I could from him without a look back. I landed in a crowded hallway not too far from my wing and continued to walk slowly towards it. I tried to shake away my frustration at Zion as my blood surged within me. I couldn't understand why he was so bent on not giving Edward a chance. Edward was the only family I had left and I wasn't going to lose him. After all, Edward's the one who's been working night and day to save me.

I forced my doubts from my mind reminding myself of my mission. I had to find out who killed that girl. My heartbeat quickened as another thought presented itself in my mind.

"Kill them."
