Chapter Twelve: Your Business Is Your Own

A/N: This chapter is small, I know. It's more of a filler than anything. The next one should be something close to 5k words though, so be patient with me. <3

I do not own any of the aforementioned characters except Beth and the plot of this story (that is, should it stray from the original Twilight). This story is for entertainment only and is not part of the official storyline. Besides, if I did own Twilight, I'd have flown to Tuscany and bought my own house.

"Edward!" Beth called out, pushing past the slow students that were not in any kind of rush to join the already long line that had started to form. The hungry and obviously irritated students grunted and tossed dirty looks at her as she pushed past them in an effort to catch up to the Penny-haired boy that looked as if he'd rather be anywhere else in that moment. Beth frowned, as it seemed as though he wasn't going to stop any time soon.

She tried again, slightly miffed now, "Hey! Cullen!"

And this time, the tall boy paused just at the doors at the Cafeteria, his siblings tossing him baffled gazes, all except for the blonde, Rosalie, Beth recalled. The other girl had paused for just a moment, a harsh glare in her eyes that seemed filled with more a warning than any real hatred. Beth's steps faltered as her heated gaze turned to her for a second before the blonde walked inside, throwing the doors open with a little more force than was completely necessary.

"What?" He had snapped once Beth had reached him, mouth set in a straight, grim line. His yellow eyes were constantly flickering from her to the doors, like a frightened animal.

Beth's breath hitched at the hostility of his body language and his tone. "I-"

"Well?" He shifted his weight impatiently, crossing his arms.

Beth's expression hardened then, remembering why she had called out to him in the first place.

"I was just going to say-" But again, he cut her off.

"Listen, just stay away from me and my family. It's better for everyone that way."

Beth took away, taken aback by his unprompted behavior. If there was anything that she had been expecting, it hadn't been that. Now, she'd just wished that she'd never even bothered to try in the first place.

"Excuse me, what the fuck is your problem?" Was all Beth was able to ask, brown eyebrows furrowed in anger and confusion. But Edward wasn't listening anymore, his attention solely fixed on his new destination- as far away from her as he could possibly get.

"I'm not done." Beth stepped up, blocking his path to the doors. Immediately, Edward regained the previous space between them, making every effort to look anywhere except her face. Some of their schoolmates were staring now, probably wondering what one of the Swan girls was doing talking to the youngest Cullen boy.

"I don't know what the fuck this hostility is for," She began lowly, vaguely gesturing towards him, "but all I wanted to say was thank you for yesterday. I can't remember much of it but Bella told me that you pulled me out of the way. That was all."

His eyes shot to hers, searching but for what she did not know. Confusion and what she hoped was shame colored his expression, his arms slackening slightly.

She scoffed, looking him up and down. "But I can see now that expressing my gratitude was unnecessary," and having said that, she began to walk off, fully fed up with his less than stellar behavior.

"Beth," his regretful voice called out behind her but she continued walking, head held high and never once looking back in his direction. The door swung closed behind her, Edward having chosen to stay behind for whatever reason. It didn't matter. Whatever he or his family did was never any of Beth's concerns. And now, if he had it his way, it never would be. But a small part of Beth wondered just what had made him so irate and why Rosalie had looked at her like she was gum on the bottom of her expensive, snakeskin, Jimmy Choos.

Unconsciously shrugging, she pushed those thoughts out of her head, it wasn't her business either way.

"Are you okay?" Bella asked once Beth had sat down at their usual table. The only other occupant at the time had been Angela, the others were in the lunch line. Beth sighed, grateful that there was a chance that they hadn't seen her interaction with the Cullen boy. That would have brought about more questions than she was readily prepared to answer and honestly, with the way how her day had been going so far (what with being badgered by 75% of the school about her wellbeing and addressing rumors), she didn't need any more provocation for the remaining three hours of school.

Beth nodded, then shook her head once her sister asked if her head had started hurting her.

"Can I ask you something?" Bella had leaned in, thankful that Angela was preoccupied with whomever she was texting with a smile on her face.

"Shoot," Beth nodded once more.

"I didn't tell you but yesterday, before the crash, I could have sworn I saw Edward across the lot before I got to Jess and Angie. But then," the brunette hesitated, "after the accident, he wasn't there. He was beside you..." She trailed off, teeth biting into the plump, pink of her lip.

Beth looked up at her sister, clearly seeing the confusion painted on her face. She had a choice here, to tell her sister the truth and have her worry over something that was most likely nothing or to lie and reassure her. Beth had no idea if that were true, in all honesty. She had been too concentrated, too frustrated at the bad vibe she had been feeling all morning to give any real care to her surroundings, much less Edward Cullen. Still, she reasoned, if he had been across the lot or not, how he had saved her didn't matter. What mattered was that she was here, alive and Edward Cullen was the reason. Her curiosity ended there, her rationality reasoning that he had probably been walking over to talk to her about Biology. And that was it. She did not care to hear any far-fetched theories that Bella's naturally overactive imagination had cooked up, whatever they may be. But when she told Bella as much, her twin had accepted the excuse but suspicion was still present in her piercing gaze, all too knowing for Beth's liking.

And at last, Edward Cullen made his way into the cafeteria, eyes lingering on her and her sister before he made his way to his usual table, where his family had already been waiting with food that they would undoubtedly not eat any bit of.

Beth saw. Beth knew. But still, she would mind her own business so long as it was none of hers.
