dump ii Part 2: who are these plebians

I think I've mentioned Out Of Bounds four times in the past few months, which would be how long it has existed, but I'm going to proceed to mention it in more detail. (I'm also going to put up some CRUX and a bunch of spoilery Deja Vu sketches tonight. Hope you like feelings.)

OUT OF BOUNDS is the story of six teenagers, or more specifically, five teenagers and an alien forced into human form for the purpose of saving the world as a form of "community service, but space community service" to atone to a crime allegedly "too immense for human comprehension", which is code for "even I don't know, man". Together, the six of them must navigate an incredibly hot summer, the end of the world, parental expectations, cryptids, and possibly worst of all, each other.

ALIX

Alix is their 'pet name' or 'human name', seeing as their species in their normal form don't have physical bodies. Or names. Alix is generally an unhappy camper and seems to have been set up by the intergalactic authorities with a very arbitrary set of information about earth and its inhabitants, leaving them with a rudimentary grasp on what humans are supposed to act like but very specific knowledge of bus times or the prices in various restaurants. They are bound to their physical form by a chain around the neck, which is nigh impossible to remove until they have saved Earth, at least from the impending threat of cryptids, which are actually alien visitors from other worlds. Said aliens are planning on opening an interstellar resort across the planet, which would involve human displacement. Everyone was concerned but not concerned enough to send anyone competent.

"what's a gender and can i abstain from it" -chapter 2 probably

First look at the rest of the cast, the top of the earlier pic, and a few of my reaaaaaaaaaally early concepts from before I had the whole group planned. Alix is also very fond of human gestures and colorful language. They also don't brush their hair. Ever.

Alix's power set involves "sparkly space magic", as eloquently put by Bella, who was really hoping for sparkly space magic herself. They can only use each of their abilities, which have been bestowed upon them by the authorities to assist in their quest, a certain amount of times. More powerful abilities have less uses but the flashier but less effective stuff is easy to throw away for shock value. Or to make a bunch of confused human children stop talking.

CAROLINE

Alix had to personally bestow powers upon each of the companions they chose by touch, and Caroline was the first person they chose, since Caroline lives right next to the park where they crashed down. Caroline also has the build of a warrior and the heart of a blunt piece of steel. Her history with other members of the group is somewhat strained, and cooperation is not in her vocabulary, but she happens to be very good at hitting things until they stop moving.

Some of my earlier sketches. Caroline does not smile often in book but she does occasionally give the 'zombie smile' (bottom left) where one might be warranted, and then no one is smiling. She keeps her hands wrapped in tape most of the time and almost always has a black eye. Joel and Sigil think she might get into fights deliberately to acquire black eyes. Her look's not complete without it.

Her weapon of choice is a baseball bat. I really need to reference what size bats are in the future, but  yeah she's using that incorrectly on purpose. Caroline doesn't play baseball, at least, not anymore. She'll swing it overhead, from the side, uppercut, doesn't matter, she's got enough force behind it to knock someone out cold.

what u looking at

I draw her a lot for fun when I want to mess with simplistic art styles

expect to see a lot of evan later but caroline laughs twice later in book and both times it's more than a little unsettling

SIGIL

Sigil's alien powers are a lot more elaborate than Caroline's- while the latter gets a strength upgrade and increased affinity for the bat she was going to use anyways, Sigil receives these magnetic stones and bioluminescence. She can manipulate the earth, create waves of light, and an entourage of other powers by messing with the crystal alignment, but the actual mechanisms of it are foreign to anyone else, if only because her attempts to explain have been poor. She has a hard time hiding these shards from her family, who live in the nicer part of town (next door to Joel's, her best friend). As such, she comes off as a bit of a snot-nosed brat. Deep down, though, she's really even more of a snot-nosed brat. Among subjects for her disdain are Caroline, public schools, and people with small backyards. She's also not excited about working with Alix, who lives in a park on a plastic slide and smells vaguely like dust and the impending smell of death. In fact, she's really not excited about working with anyone. They also have terrible ideas.

(Don't ask her if that's her real name. She will skewer you with her rocks.)

It's the middle of the summer but Sigil wears a coat around to stuff her rocks in when they're not fighting. She usually wears a large hat or ducks her head as well so she doesn't have to look anyone in the eyes, at least not when she's in the company of a bunch of hooligans who are running around town and yelling nonsense to each other (they don't have code names or identities. The whole town is very confused about these guys).

JOEL

FYI JOEL AND SIG AND CAROLINE ARE BASED ON BUT NOT THE SAME AS THE CHARACTERS FROM THIS SUMMER. ANYTHING THAT PERTAINED TO THOSE CHARACTERS DOES NOT PERTAIN TO THESE GUYS EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE ESSENTIALLY THE SAME. THANKS

Joel is the token guy for the group. Though I haven't quite worked it into his design yet, he does have some issues with his jaw and doesn't speak much, if ever, because speech therapy went over poorly. He was hit multiple times by a blunt object in the park late one night at a block party at a young age by another kid. I'm still working out just how much he can/will talk due to some residual trauma around the event but he's fluent in sign language, though no one in the group is besides Sigil, so usually it comes to translating, pantomiming, or writing things down on paper. He's too nice for anyone to hate, but everyone's so sick of Sigil, who is always over him like a dark, blonde cloud, so he kind of gets lumped in with her, which he's fine with.

ERIN

Erin is the group punching bag. These were my first pics of her and as you can tell she looked like Mimsy forever and it was uncomfortable for everyone involved but mainly me. In fact Erin used to be from a different book. I moved her and then realized that she was a total crybaby. She's pretty smart but she's also one of those "i'll wait" kind of people who will just stop talking when anyone talks over her and no one else in this group ever stops talking so Erin just never talks. When she does talk she just gets shut down immediately. It doesn't help that she's the most visible of the group (hard to hide those wires in her hair) and she got her alien powers from a literal plant. Given, said plants are the dominant species on their planet, but they're still... plants.

Alix has a grudge against plants. And Erin.

More concept doodles. Erin confident and smiling is OOC. Erin's hips are not OOC they're great but probably not going to end up canon because Erin is a potato

I finally got Erin to look decent and I was very proud of myself. I'd say this would be about a reference? It also works well with my style which is just to avoid my total inability to Actually Draw by making my character designs super geometric and distinctive. I'm really not there with the bodies but I actually like most of the faces for this one.

they didn't

BELLA

Ignore corner Gillian. Corner Gillian is judging you but mainly this book, which will probably get out before her book. So. Bella! Bella is the most tolerable of the group. She's a special snowflake who will never get over the world not revolving around her personal interests or how niche and special she is (uwu) but she's also usually at least kind of friendly, and she's not Alix, or Caroline, or Sigil, which earns her points because none of them can tolerate each other and none of the others can tolerate any of them (except Joel, who clings to Sigil like a kindergartener on the first day of school). Bella is upset because her radio-wave based powers don't jive with her ***witch aesthetic***.

Some Bella and Erin sketches. probably a little too bulky on the bella tbh but I digress

It's really hard to talk about these guys but I am going to post the first chapter up in my random book and hopefully itll explain things a little better
