Chapter Three

"What do you mean they're gone, Ester?!" Elaine shrieked.

Calmly I tell her, "they disappeared Elaine, just like the people on the news and just like the president said."

I grab my keys, phone, and bag as I walk out of the office.

"Where are you going Ester?" Corinna asked me as the three of them followed me.

"I'm going to go pick up Eloise from school and then I'm going home and calling Mathias, and the rest of the family." I answered matter of factly.

"Well I'm going with you, I don't want to be here in the store after what just happened." Ethan said.

"Me too", chimed Elaine.

"Me three", peeped Corinna.

I spun around to look at them and their faces knowing that right now they were just as scared as I was about what just happened. I took a deep breath and said, "Not all of you can come with me to pick up Eloise. Ethan this is what you're going to do, empty out all of the cash registers and the safe of the cash we have.

Elaine grab mom and dads stuff, when Ethan is done grabbing the cash, I want the three of you to pack as much water and food as you can. These next few hours are about to get really hectic and people are probably going to be going crazy. Bring your cars and dad's car around back and fill them up with food and water.

Once you guys fill the cars up completely with food and water, lock the store and go straight home and unpack it all. Keep the doors and windows locked and the windows drawn until I get home with Eloise. Corinna, call your family to see what they're doing and what's going on with them and let them know that you're safe and that you're heading to my place for the time being."

I looked at them as if it might be the last time and I tell them, "I love you guys. I'll provide you with updates along the way and I want you guys to give me updates as well. Also make sure you use the back roads to get home. If you have to get on sidewalks and jump curbs do it the police have bigger fish to deal with than you guys jumping curbs and driving on sidewalks."

I give them each a hug and we say our goodbyes as I exit the store and run to my car. I see parts of the devastation that the disappearances has had as I see plumes of smoke coming from behind some buildings and people screaming. I get in my car, lock the door and put my seatbelt on and I close my eyes as a tear escapes my eyes.

Lord, please please let me see my siblings again. Please please let me see my parents again. I beg of you please let my family make it out of this trial. I know that it's illegal to pray to you right now but I could really use a miracle right now.

I open my eyes again and crank on the car and I pull of the parking lot like a mad woman. I swerve around abandoned cars and people frantically crying out for their missing loved ones. I start dialing Eloise but there's no answer. I try Mathias, no answer. I try some of my family members, no answer.

"Damn it!" I shout and throw my phone on the passenger seat floor. The cell towers must either be down or right now there is too many calls going out at the time and the satellites are being bombarded by billions of calls.

I make a sharp right onto Miller Drive going East and I dodge even more cars and accidents. I send Ethan, Elaine, and Corinna a quick update text to let them know that I got on Miller. I feel my phone vibrate on my lap with update texts from each of them letting me know that they did the tasks I asked and that they are on their way home.

Twenty minutes of bobbing and weaving and I finally make it to Eloise's high school. There is a huge line of cars and parents frantically trying to get their kids out of school. I haphazardly park my car and yank the keys out of ignition as I run into the office.

There's a bunch of parents yelling at the administration to let them take their kids out of school as the administration is yelling back telling them to be orderly. I see a student walking into the office leaving the door into the school opened and I rush into the school.

Other parents see what I did and follow suit immediately taking action into their own hands. I sprint down the corridor looking for my sister's second period class. After fifteen minutes of frantically looking into classrooms full of scared teenagers I finally found the classroom she was in.

I barge into the classroom and I yell, "Eloise, are you in here?"

I see her head shoot up from the ground with tears in her eyes, and she gets up and rushes to hug me.

Hysterically, she starts telling me about her friends and classmates started disappearing and how she didn't know what was happening.

I try soothing her as I tell her, "I know baby but right now we need to get home okay? Grab your stuff and let's go."

She turns to grab her stuff and her teacher comes up to me and says, "they haven't called her to the office for her to be dismissed and I can't just let you take her."

I turn to her teacher and I snap, "lady did you not just see your students disappear in front of your face? Are you seriously about to tell me that I can't take her when half your class mysteriously disappeared? Shut the hell up and sit down because I'm taking my sister out of this hell hole and getting her home to her family. And I suggest that you call your family and see where they are and worry about your damn self."

I open the door to her classroom and I grab my sister and we run out of the school. We run across the street in front of the school dodging cars and get into my car. I start her up and I reverse onto the street.

Suddenly I feel a very violent push come from behind us. Both of our bodies lunged violently forward from the impact and Eloise's forehead bursts open from the impact of the airbag. My head bangs against the steering wheel before bouncing into the headrest of my seat and into the delayed airbag.

Miraculously I remained consciousness and I put my car in drive and drove out of the school zone to home. I looked in the rearview mirror to the car that hit me and I saw that it was an electric vehicle with no one in it. When I looked back to the road before me I suddenly saw an onslaught of electric vehicles coming at me at full speed.

I tried dodging as many cars as possible while trying to keep Eloise sitting back in her seat. When I looked back to the road after trying to fix Eloise, an electric vehicle was coming in front of me head on. I saw my life flash before my eyes as I grabbed the wheel and yanked it as hard as I can to the left.

Before I knew it we were in an empty side street, I sighed in momentarily relief. I stop on the side of the road real quick to give myself and Eloise a quick inspection to make sure that there were no bones sticking out or any other noticeable damage. All Eloise had was a gash on her forehead and I had a bump forming on the middle of my forehead.

I reach over the middle console to look for my phone but I couldn't find it anywhere. It must've slid under the seat during the accident, I thought to myself. I give up on looking for my phone and I start looking for Eloise's phone in her book bag and then in her pockets.

I finally found it in her back pocket and pull it out to text everyone that I got Eloise and that I'm on the way back home. I got some drive safe texts in response and I pull up the map app on her phone.

I put into the maps our address to find different ways to get home but the app couldn't find the way home that didn't have a two hour traffic build up. So I scanned the roads that were near me and slowly drove back home using the streets that were showing up on the app. After three turns and four dead ends later, I finally managed to get on a road that I was familiar with and bobbed and weaved my way home.
