Chapter Four
I saw in the driveway my brother's car, my dad's truck, Corinna's car and Mathias' car. I pull up onto the lawn not really caring about parking in the driveway. I go around to the passenger's side to get Eloise out of the car.
I looked over her again to make sure she was still breathing and that nothing else happened to her and thankfully she was intact. I grabbed her backpack and put it on, grabbed her phone and mine and put it in my back pocket to then grab her right arm and try to haphazardly carry her into the house.
Thankfully, Ethan and Mathias came out of the house and carried her into the house since I half dragged, half carried her halfway down the lawn.
"What happened to you guys?" Mathias asked me.
"Oh you know killer electric vehicles and hysterical parents, just the usual." I responded sarcastically.
"Ah", Mathias responded, "let me take a look at you."
I closed the door behind us and locked it as Mathias and Ethan placed Eloise down on the couch and Elaine started checking on Eloise frantically.
"It's okay I feel fine, my head just hit the wheel when the electric car hit us so if anything I just have a concussion." I waved off Mathias' concerned look.
Ethan turned on the tv and flipped it to our local news. This newscaster had pink puffy eyes, their hair and clothing disheveled.
We all sit down on the couch facing the tv.
The newscaster goes to speak as their lip quivers, no noise comes out of their mouth. The newscaster closes their mouth, gulps, and rearranges a stack of papers that were haphazardly left on his desk.
The newscaster looks back at the camera and says, "new reports are coming in of how many people have mysteriously disappeared. In Los Angeles, approximately 50,000 people have been reported missing. In Houston, approximately 34,000 people have gone missing and in Miami it is reported that 15,000 people have gone missing."
The screen changes to recorded videos of the disasters that were taking place all over the world. There were so many people crying out for their children that went missing. The screen panned to a pregnant woman feeling her stomach and crying out in agony that her baby is not there anymore. The woman fell to her knees and she was inconsolable. Other people came up to her and asked her how could she possibly know that.
She explains that she was at her doctors office that morning getting another checkup and had an ultrasound scheduled. She was laying on the bed with the ultrasound technician detailing the different limbs of her baby when it disappeared from the screen. The ultrasound technician was confused and kept moving the wand around to find the baby but there's only so many places a baby can go inside of their mother.
Surveillance video of a daycare center appears on the screen showing daycare workers with babies and toddlers. Then in a blink of an eye the babies and toddlers disappear and the daycare workers begin to panic.
Knock! Knock! We all jumped at the sound of the front door knocking, Ethan lowered the volume on the tv. We looked at each other, no one really knowing what we should do. Should we open the door? Should we pretend that we didn't hear anything?
Knock! Knock! Mathias and Ethan stand up and move towards the front windows and the peephole. Ethan grabs the bat my dad places next to the tv stand. Mathias grabs his gun from his waistband and unlocks the safety. Elaine creeps closer to Eloise to check on her and to also keep her quiet if she wakes up if things go sour.
"I know you guys are in there. I saw you guys pull up. I just want to make sure you guys are okay", said the woman behind the door.
"Wait, I recognize that voice", I say. "Mrs. Peterson?!" I respond to the woman.
"Yes dear, it's me Mrs. Peterson."
I got up and looked through the peephole and I saw that it was our neighbor from across the street. I opened the door and I say, "Mrs. Peterson, I'm so glad it's you. Come in."
She walks into the house as Ethan puts the bat away and Mathias puts the safety back on his gun and puts into his waistband. Mrs. Peterson looks around at us before saying, "where are your parents? I see their truck outside but I don't see them in here?"
I close the door as I say, "we don't know. Our parents disappeared just like the other people did on the news."
"Oh you poor things. You must be devastated - wait where's Eloise?"
"She's laying on the sofa Mrs. Peterson. She hit her head pretty hard when Ester picked her up from school and an electric car slammed into them." Elaine answered.
"Let me have a look at her."
Mrs. Peterson went around the sofa and grabbed Eloise's wrist to start measuring her heartbeat. Mrs. Peterson was a retired nurse who used to babysit us when we were younger. She would bake us cookies and was the first person who our parents would go to when we had fevers.
Three years ago Mrs. Peterson was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer. She died two weeks after her diagnoses, but her son, Tom, went to the Center to get an Avernian to bring her back from the dead. Ever since she came back I always felt that there was something different about her. Something not quite human.
Mrs. Peterson takes a step back and says, "her heart beat is faint but she should be fine." She looks up to me and asks, "how long has she been out for?"
"Um I don't know maybe twenty, thirty minutes?" I responded.
"Hmmm, I'm going to try waking her up. Ethan, Mathias I want you to help me get her to her side. Corinna get me a towel, Elaine get me two buckets of water and some soap. Ester I need you to get your family's first aid kit. I'm going to clean up her gash and bandage it up.
Then I'm going to take a listen to her breathing and determine whether or not we need to go to the hospital." Mrs. Peterson doled out the assignments and we each got started on our tasks.
Matthias and Ethan rolled Eloise to her side, her back facing Mrs. Peterson and her front facing the back of the sofa. Corinna ran down the hallway to grab as many towels as she could hold.
Elaine grabbed two buckets from the garage and headed over to the kitchen sink to fill it up with water. She grabbed the soap dispenser from the on top of the counter and brought it all to the living room. I looked in the cabinets for the first aid kit that my mom kept in the kitchen.
"Ester, where is that first aid kit?!" Mrs. Peterson yelled after me.
"I'm looking for it Mrs. Peterson! It's not in the last place that I saw my mom put it!" I yelled back and I start frantically looking under the kitchen sink. I moved all the cleaning supplies out from under the sink and all the way in the back I found the first aid kit.
I snatched the kit from the back of the sink knocking cleaning solution bottles all over the place and I ran into the living room.
I opened up the first aid kit as I plopped myself next to Mrs. Peterson who had her ear pressed against Eloise's back.
"Her breathing isn't shallow but it isn't deep like if she was in a deep sleep." Mrs. Peterson whispered. "I'm going to clean her wound now and then we're going to gently wake her up. When she does wake up she needs to stay laying down because if she gets up too quickly she can faint."
Matthias and Ethan gently flip Eloise onto her back so that Mrs. Peterson can clean her gash. I move to put a pillow under head to prop it up a bit and I go around Mrs. Peterson to also prop Eloise's legs.
"Corinna dear, can you grab Eloise a glass with water. When she wakes up I want her to take a few sips."
Corinna got up to do as Mrs. Peterson asked, while the rest of us stood around the couch watching Mrs. Peterson's skilled hands get to work.
"Pass me some gauze, Ester."
I hand her a decent amount of gauze and I prepare some first aid tape for her to use. She opens her hand for the tape and I place the first piece in her hand and she strategically puts it over the gauze. I hand her a few more pieces until she was satisfied with the placement of the tapes.
I put the tape and the unused gauze into the first aid kit and I close it up and put it on the coffee table. Corinna hands Mrs. Peterson the glass of water as she gently starts waking Eloise up.
Eloise opens her eyes and an expression of confusion washes over her. She tries sitting up but Mrs. Peterson slows her down.
"You can't get up too fast honey or else your head will start pounding." She warns Eloise.
Eloise nods and with help from Matthias and Ethan she sits up. Mrs. Peterson hands her the glass of water and she takes a few sips.
"What happened?" Asked Eloise.
"We got into an accident when we were leaving the school and you bumped your head pretty hard on the dashboard." I told her.
She lifts her hand up to touch the taped gauze on her head and she winces.
Eloise looks up again and scans the room before asking, "where's mom and dad?"
Everyone looks to me for the answer and I open my mouth but no words come out. How am I supposed to tell my baby sister that her mom and dad disappeared? How am I supposed to break it to her that she may never see her parents again?
Then the realization hit me. I may never see my parents again. My brother and sisters may never see their parents again. We're all we have. I hear my parent's words echo in my ears, "one day we won't be on this earth anymore and you guys will only have each other."
I always thought they were talking about when they were dying. When they saw their grandchildren be born and when they saw us married. I never thought that it could mean them disappearing from the face of earth-
"Ester?" Asked Corinna concerned that I hadn't said anything yet.
"Sorry, Eloise," I crouch down next to the sofa she was on, "mom and dad disappeared like some of your classmates did. I don't know where they went or how it happened, but I promise you, all of you, that I will look for them and I will find them."
I attempt a weak smile at Eloise and then to Elaine and Ethan. I grab Eloise's hand as I stand up and give it a tight squeeze before asking Corinna and Mathias, " were you guys able to get in contact with anyone from your family?"
Corinna lowered her eyes to the ground as she said, "I haven't heard from my family since this morning when I left the house. On our way here I made a quick pitstop at my house and no one was there.." Her right hand went up to her mouth to stifle a sob. I walked over to where she was standing and gave her a tight hug.
"I'm sorry Corinna, we'll find them. I promise." I whispered to her but truthfully, I don't think we'll ever find our parents.
