Chapter 22: Death to the Queen of Chaos
New York
The world has lost all hope, the incursion was destroying everything in its path, time was running out and the entire city of New York was torn apart.
A shroud of heart-wrenching sadness draped over the scene as they embraced Wanda in their arms. They knew that time was running out, and the inevitability of her demise loomed over them like a dark cloud. Doctor Strange, Magneto, Spider-Man and Hawkeye held onto her tightly, unwilling to let go. Monica, Kate and Kamala (Ms Marvel) stood next to them with their hands on her shoulders.
Tears streamed down her face as they held onto her, cherishing the fleeting moments she had left. It was a goodbye, a farewell to a tortured soul who didn't deserve such a cruel fate. Wanda, who had endured so much pain and trauma, felt the warmth of their embrace and realized for the first time what it truly meant to be loved. It was a moment she would never forget, a bittersweet reminder of the love and compassion she had longed for all her life. Never in her entire lonely, traumatic life has Wanda ever felt this kind of warmth. The embrace of multiple people holding her in their arms like family. It reminded her of what she always wanted from the start... All she ever wanted in her life... Being loved. At this moment, she realized that no matter what, there will always be people who care about her.
The reality of that thought loomed heavily on her heart. The thought of a future she could never have filled her with deep sadness, even as Spider-Man's words gave her a glimmer of hope. She knew what needed to be done, but the instinct to survive, to cling onto life, was a force too powerful to ignore. It was like trying to keep her eyes open without blinking, a futile battle against her own nature.
As they hugged her, their embrace growing tighter with each passing moment, the rest of the heroes from our universe and universe-838 emerged from portals, ready to end her life. Wanda's angst became worse as she took in small, shallow breaths, her tears falling to the ground below. But the heroes holding onto her refused to let go, holding onto her with all their strength as they faced the inevitable. It was a moment of unparalleled emotion, a testament to the power of love even in the darkest of times. Tony Stark of 838 approached them slowly, upon seeing the scene, he felt a sense of guilt for what they were going to do to her.
Iron Man (838): Stephen Strange... It is time.
Strange knew what Wanda felt at this moment. Because this is exactly what he felt inside of him as well. Cold feet. As they were hugging her, they could feel the tremors of her body shaking in angst and dread.
Loki: Step aside so that we can finish this.
Captain Marvel: We understand this is hard, Stephen. We are not heartless monsters... If there was any other way... I would never do this in a million years. But you gotta understand that countless lives are at stake...
Iron Man (838): You have my word, we will try to make it as quick and painless as possible.
The weight of the moment hung heavy in the air. Their hearts ached with the knowledge that they were about to witness something so heartbreaking. The heroes standing by, feeling powerless to change the inevitable outcome. They knew they had to let go of her, but it was as if they were ripping their own hearts out in the process.
Strange's mind was racing with all the possible outcomes and the consequences that come with them. He was struggling to hold back his tears as he saw the fear and desperation in Wanda's eyes. He wished with every fiber of his being that there was another way, but it was too late for that now.
As they tried to let go, Wanda clung onto Strange, Peter and her father even tighter.
Doctor Strange: Wanda we have to.
Wanda: I can't do this...
They felt the weight of her fear and sadness. It was as if they were being dragged down with her into the depths of despair. They wanted to ease her pain, but they knew that this was a pain they could not take away.
Wanda: I don't wanna do this...
Her body and voice was trembling while looking at Strange and her father with fear and sadness in her eyes.
Wanda: I don't wanna do this. Please... Please don't let go... I can't do this. I don't... I don't wanna die.
They felt her words like a physical blow to the gut. They knew that they were about to witness something tragic, something that would haunt them for the rest of their lives.
Magneto: I'm so sorry, my child... I truly am.
Spider-Man removed his mask again, not worrying about the rest seeing his face. He put his forehead on Wanda's while they both shared in their sorrow.
Spider-Man: I know this isn't right... But I promise you whatever happens... I won't leave your side. You're not alone, Wanda. We're with you till the end of the line.
Everyone saw what was transpiring in front of them. Some was saddened over what they had to do, but they knew it had to be done. Kang ordered Vision to play along, so Vision slowly walked toward Wanda while she was holding Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and Magneto tightly. She didn't notice Vision yet since her sight was blocked by the ones around her.
Vision: Wanda...
Her heart melted when she heard his voice. She immediately let go of everyone and her eyes were completely locked onto Vision standing in front of her, alive and well. This time she really thought he was dead for good. As Vision spoke, the heroes held their breath. They knew that this was it. This was the moment that they had been dreading, the moment that they knew was coming but had been trying to avoid. Everyone could see the love and relief in her gaze, little did she know that Vision was not there anymore, but a vessel, controlled by Kang. She walked slowly toward him and touched his cheeks.
Wanda: (Whispering in a sad tone) Vis? Wh... H-How?
Vision: I'm sorry for taking so long... Kang took me... At the Island... I managed to escape to warn everyone, but that's when I realized... That's when I realized that you are too dangerous to be kept alive.
Wanda frowned slightly upon discovering that this was not the Vision she knew and loved, since he would never say such things. Her heart sank into the depths of despair. She couldn't believe what she was seeing, a cruel illusion that was designed to break her. Her grip on Vision's cheeks loosened as she stumbled backwards in disbelief. Spider-Man quickly rushed to her side, preventing her from falling over her feet.
Wanda: You're not Vision...
Vision: Wanda, I'm sorry that it has to be this way.
Vision slowly lifted himself up, hovering in the air with his gaze fixed on Wanda's. Her heart ached as she stood, exposed and vulnerable before everyone she's ever knew. The deep sense of betrayal that gnawed at her soul was a visceral pain that threatened to overwhelm her. The realization that all those she had ever known, including Vision, were poised to end her life without a second thought, shook her to her core.
In that moment, she felt the weight of the world crushing down upon her, a crushing burden that threatened to snuff out her spirit and break her resolve.
As she looked out upon the dozens of heroes ready to strike her down, she was keenly aware of the danger that she was in. For an instant, she was left exposed and alone, a defenseless target, open to any attack that might come her way. She braced herself for the worst, knowing that her fate was sealed. But even in that moment, she refused to give up hope, clinging to the belief that somehow, some way, she might be able to survive.
Kang, watching from the safety of the Quantum Ream through Vision's eyes, was pleased with the way things were unfolding. He had succeeded in his plan to turn most of her former allies against her, to make them see her as a threat. He knew that they would strike her down, but that was not his ultimate goal. He had bigger plans, plans that would reshape the entire universe. He then ordered Vision to unleash a beam of energy toward her.
So that's what he did. It sent her falling to the ground with great force. That was when an automatic forcefield instantly protected Wanda from the attack, causing the beam of light to only cause her slight pain. While she was down, everyone else started striking her with their own ranged attacks from all sides, trying to end this quickly. Spider-Man was thrown away from her by Jean Grey's telekinesis. The relentless assault on Wanda was merciless, with each and every individual launching a barrage of attacks from all angles. Despite the overwhelming force hurled her way, Wanda remained standing, her body writhing in excruciating agony as she felt every ounce of power rippling through her veins, tearing her apart from the inside out. Yet, it was not merely the physical pain that was tearing at her heartstrings; it was the emotional torment of their actions that was causing her the most anguish. As the onslaught continued, Wanda's shattered soul let out a soft, pleading whisper, a desperate plea for the cruelty to end.
Wanda: Stop... Please stop.
She didn't have the energy left to scream, but she tried everything to raise her voice.
Wanda: Please stop...
But everybody shut themselves off completely, knowing what they had to do, so they just kept going.
Her body contorted in silent screams of excruciating agony, as the powerful forcefield that had protected her began to wane, diminishing over time. Blood streamed like a river down her nose, a testament to the immense strain she was enduring as she summoned every last ounce of strength to stay alive. Within her, the nexus entity that had taken hold was working feverishly to save her, generating forcefields and mending wounds with such incredible speed that they seemed to disappear the moment they appeared.
Those who were on her side were helpless as they watched her suffer, feeling their hearts sink in despair. Magneto's breaths came in ragged gasps, his face twisted in anguish. Spider-Man's mind raced, searching for a way to help. Hawkeye turned away, tears streaming down his face, unable to bear the sight of Wanda's suffering. It was unbearable to watch her being slowly destroyed in this manner.
But then, without a moment's hesitation, Doctor Strange charged towards her, his instincts driving him forward. He summoned a massive shield, hoping to shield her from harm. However, the powerful blasts from all sides quickly shattered his eldritch shield as if it was nothing. Ms Marvel tried to help, summoning her purple constructs to form a protective barrier, but they too were futile against the overwhelming force of the onslaught.
Doctor Strange: Everyone stop! All you're doing is hurting her!
No one listened to him. They thought that if they give Wanda a chance, even just for a second, she could attack them and put the entire plan in jeopardy.
Iron Man (838): She's doing this to herself! If she just let go it would've been done already!
Doctor Strange: (Looks at Captain Marvel) You know deep down this is not right! You said this will be quick and painless! Now you're doing the opposite!
Captain Marvel: I'm sorry Stephen. We thought it would be. But she's fighting back! You know this is the only way. You said so yourself!
As Wanda was brought down to her knees, trying to defend herself with her power, she was heartbroken and in anguish.
Suddenly, out of pure instinct, the exact same way she created a hex over Westview, she erupted with a scream and pushed them all back with a very powerful blast of red energy. A bright red light illuminated the entire city as her Scarlet Witch outfit finally reappeared on her body along with her crown and a beautiful cape. The outfit looked pure with no sign of corruption and the crown was whole again with no cracks. It was not the outfit that was corrupted by the darkhold's evil.
(It looked like the outfit she had in Wandavision with a few visual upgrades)
-This is what it looks like:
The Nexus entity that was tied with her, was more than a mere force, it was a living entity with a will of its own. It had always been there to shield Wanda from harm, but this time it went into overdrive, fighting back with a ferocity that was truly remarkable. Wanda watched in amazement as her hands glowed with an otherworldly light, realizing with a jolt that she had just undergone a transformation unlike any other. She had rebirthed the Scarlet Witch.
But this was not something she had ever desired. Wanda despised the name and all that it stood for. The very idea of being associated with the Scarlet Witch filled her with dread and loathing. So, as she gazed down at her new form, her heart filled with conflicting emotions, she whispered softly under her breath.
Wanda: No no no no no... What have I done...? (She snuffles)
Wanda thought she was doing this on her own free will, but it was the Nexus entity protecting her. This is the first time that Wanda was using her powers since she saved the Squirrel on the Island. That was months ago. By doing this, she broke the promise she made to herself. The promise to never use her power ever again. She knew her death was the only way, but her instincts would not allow it to happen.
Everyone stood up from the blast and looked at Wanda wearing her Scarlet Witch outfit. They looked each other as if this very moment was already discussed... Plan B.
Sentry flew straight at her and hit her in the face with all the power inside of him, causing a shockwave so large that every window in the entire city was shattered into pieces. A blow this powerful from Sentry himself would completely obliterate most opponents... That was the plan, but he's never faced The Scarlet Witch before. The blow did send her flying through the air though. Sentry flew up and hit her back down again, creating a giant crater. Wanda was hurt, lying in the middle of the crater, stunned for a moment. Her automatic forcefield took most of the damage so she slowly got back up.
Everyone nodded their heads and began attacking her from all sides again, but this time they used physical attacks with their fists and close range weapons. The attacks were so fast and so overwhelming that it didn't even give Wanda a chance to think or react.
Sue Storm (Invisible Woman) from universe-838 created an unbreakable forcefield around the seven heroes who were on Wanda's side so that they don't interfere. Sylvie used her telepathic abilities to mentally strip them from their powers momentarily. All they could do was watch Wanda being beaten to a pulp with sorrow and despair in their hearts.
Invisible Woman (838): I'm truly sorry... Please forgive me.
Wanda fell to the ground after each attack, as she tried to stand up, another attack knocked her back down. She was bruised and cut and full of blood. Some of the heroes completely stopped after realizing all they were doing was hurting her. Among them was Vision. He was about to punch her again when he suddenly just froze in place.
Vision: Get out... Get... out... of my head.
He grabbed his head and fell to his knees.
Vision: Get out of my HEAD!!!!
Vision screamed for a couple of seconds before shouting it again.
Vision: GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!
The blue light on his forehead glitched for a moment and Vision stopped screaming. He finally regained control of his own mind and shut Kang out of his system, but Kang could still see everything from his eyes.
The rest of the heroes ignored their conscience and only thought about what's at stake. They knew it had to be done by any means necessary. While she was being beaten, cut and shot, she tried to make them stop, but she didn't want to fight back since she still tried to keep her promise even though she technically already broke it.
Vision quickly flew in front of Wanda to protect her.
Vision: Stop! Everyone! Just stop! What are you doing!? You're killing her!
The words that escaped Vision's lips were a desperate plea, a cry for mercy that cut through the chaos and turmoil that surrounded them. He implored everyone to halt their actions, to cease their relentless onslaught, and to take a moment to truly see what they were doing. As his voice echoed through the air, a momentary lull descended upon the battlefield, and for the first time, they all became fully aware of the toll their actions had taken on Wanda.
They had been so consumed by their quest to save the universe that they had failed to see the damage they were inflicting upon one of their own. The pain etched onto Wanda's face was a stark reminder of the gravity of their actions, and the enormity of the sacrifice that they had asked of her. For a moment, they all stood still, awash with a sense of deep remorse and regret, knowing that they had pushed her to the brink of her endurance.
Vision: Can't you see all you're doing is hurting her!? There has to be some other way. There has to. I won't allow for any of this to continue.
Vision held out his hand and picked Wanda back up. She was barely standing straight, she couldn't see clearly and her legs were wobbling in an effort to keep standing on her feet.
Without any warning or hesitation, in her time of weakness, Wolverine plunged his adamantium claws through Wanda from behind her back, causing an excruciating pain that shot through her entire body. She gasped for air, feeling as if her world was being torn apart at the seams. The sound of her bones cracking echoed through the air as her body was pierced by the razor-sharp claws. Wanda's eyes widened in disbelief, and a mixture of shock, sadness, and despair washed over her.
Spider-Man: Wanda! No!
She coughed blood from her mouth and fell to the ground. She looked at Vision as she felt her life flash before her eyes.
Wanda: W-Why?
Vision looked at Wolverine in anger, but Wanda was his first priority at the moment. Vision held her in his arms. Wolverine's claws went back into his hands and for the first time he realized that after all, she was just a person, a person with her own hopes and dreams. In an unexplainable way, seeing her on the ground, he saw Rogue, the girl who also had powers she couldn't control. A girl who hurt innocent people by accident, who was ultimately saved by Wolverine and sent to a place where she could belong.
Vision was devastated at what Kang made him do.
Vision: I'm so sorry Wanda. I didn't... I could never... I was not myself.
As a small tear fell from his eyes. Wanda finally realized that this was really Vision. She could sense it. Something she was unable to do when he was under Kang's control. But she still didn't know why he would've attacked her. It was not something Vision would do to her. She was not even in a state to fully take it in.
Wanda: Vision...?
Vision: It's gonna be okay, Wanda.
Invisible Woman removed her forcefield around the seven heroes since her conscience also made her realize that this was wrong. Among the seven, Doctor Strange, Magneto and Spider-Man ran toward Wanda. Doctor Strange immediately touched her wound and she groaned in pain, he was a former surgeon after all.
Spider-Man: Is she gonna be okay?
Doctor Strange: The stab wound isn't fatal, but she's losing a lot of blood. Wanda, can you talk to me?
Wanda: *cough* I... I can't feel my legs. I can't feel my legs.
Her words carried heavily onto the rest as they stood over her. The ones who attacked her didn't know what to think or feel, since they were the reason this was happening, they knew they needed to finish the job, but their hearts stopped them from doing so.
Spider-Man: I got you. You're gonna be okay.
He looked at Strange, his eyes glimmering from unshed tears.
Magneto: Strange, is she gonna be okay?
Doctor Strange: I don't... I don't know.
Vision looked at the others in disgust.
Vision: This is exactly what Kang wanted! All of you turning on the one person able to stop him!
Loki: What are you talking about?
Vision: Kang had control of my actions. I managed to break free, but I fear his goal is already achieved.
Dr Doom: What goal exactly?
Vision: He told me he wanted revenge on her, so his goal was to make everyone turn on her in order to break her. I know that you all turned on her by choice... Kang just used that to his advantage. He used me as a vessel to reveal that she is the being he is after.
Thor: But how does this information change anything?
Vision: Kang's goal isn't just revenge. He knew that she would be severely injured in this battle... She is now too weak to fight back. Now he will be able to take her power without risking his defeat.
Captain Marvel: But what about all of us?
Vision: Kang does not fear any of you. As many as you are... He fears her. He's killed thousands of you from countless universes during the previous multiversal war. How will this time be any different?
Loki: But this doesn't change the fact that her death could be the key to reversing all of this. This reality will go back to how it was before she changed it.
As Loki was speaking, Vision and Spider-Man took Wanda's arms and held them over their shoulders. The Watcher suddenly appeared in front them along with the Paragons of the Multiverse. Everyone was startled at their presence. Some of our heroes noticed Black Widow, Captain America and Iron Man while Spider-Man noticed the other two whom he met during the Statue of Liberty incident. The heroes from 838 noticed Professor X and Captain Carter.
Captain America (Sam): Steve?
Hawkeye: Nat?
Warmachine: Tony?
Wolverine: Charles?
Iron Man (838): Peggy?
Spider-Man looked at the other Spider-Mans and also noticed Doctor Octopus and one other Spider-Man among them.
Spider-Man: Guys? What are you doing here?
Spider-Man (Andrew): Hey man.
Spider-Man (Tobey): It's good to see you.
Spider-Man then looked at the other Spider-Man (Ps4).
Spider-Man: I don't believe we've met.
Spider-Man (Ps4): Hey dude. Nice costume.
Spider-Man: Thanks! I like yours too! The white Spider logo really adds a lot of character to it.
Doctor Doom: What is this nonsense? What the hell is going on!?
The Watcher: I am the Watcher and I'm here to stop you from doing something you will regret for the rest of what's left of your lives.
Loki: What do you mean by that?
Professor X: Wanda's death won't change a thing. She didn't merely use magic to alter reality. Her power far exceeds that of any sorcerer. The power of the Celestials themselves flows through her veins... Even if this worked... If everything turned back to how it was, it would be exactly like this. Everything was about to come to an end. There was nearly nothing left but destruction and war. Wanda Maximoff didn't change reality because she wanted to... She changed reality because she had to.
Wanda was taken aback by this statement. She knew she changed reality, but she thought she probably did it either on accident or just because she wanted to. She couldn't remember the details but she does remember the vague memory of everyone trying to stop her from doing it.
The fact that many of these heroes who arrived with The Watcher were versions of heroes who were known very well by the rest, made them listen more easily to what they had to say. Tony Stark looked at our heroes and walked forward to speak to them. Captain America joined him.
Iron Man: I know Steve and I come from a different universe than you guys... And I know we died in this one. But apart from that...
Steve Rogers finished Tony's sentence.
Captain America (Steve): Our universe isn't that different from yours.
Iron Man: So I think hearing this from us would change your minds more easily...
Captain America (Steve): The fact is that Wanda was never the enemy. She never destroyed the multiverse. She saved it.
The Watcher: By altering reality, she single handedly prevented the total destruction of everything in existence by the hands of Kang.
Wanda tried to speak up but she was still severely injured and barely able to stand up straight, all that was keeping her from falling down was Vision and Peter holding her over their shoulders. Not to mention she was still completely emotionally drained from this whole nightmare. Her day started on her Island she spent 16 months on, early in the morning, walking into the ocean completely broken and alone, finding brief hope when Vision arrived only for him to be ripped away and "killed" in front of her again, completely destroying what was left of her heart. Then being confronted by Agatha and everyone she knew at New Asgard, being the main reason the incursion is happening, being the one person destined to destroy everything, being relentlessly attacked by nearly everyone she ever knew... She didn't even want to be here right now among the ones who just brutally attacked her moments ago. She was tired, beaten, broken and emotionally torn apart. Strange knew what she wanted to ask, so he did it for her.
Doctor Strange: But why do I remember it differently? I remember everyone running toward her, trying to stop her from doing it. I knows this because I saw it in the dream I had about her life. It was the very first dream.
Captain America (Steve): This entire thing is a complete misunderstanding.
Professor X: I think it's best if I just showed you all what really happened that day.
Professor X touched his head with his fingers and connected with everyone telepathically. Everyone entered some sort of dream state while Professor X showed them the previous multiversal war. Revealing the truth to everyone. The truth that will change everything.
