Twins (Barnes)

A/n: Another installment of the mini series from days of yore lol- it's not necessary to read those first, but you can if you want :)

"Bucky!" you called, spotting him walking back from work to the apartment.

He stopped immediately, turning to see who it was who called out his name. Of course, he always recognized his twin's voice, but he still had to make sure it was you. When he saw you, his entire face brightened.

"(Y/n)!" he answered, and he braced himself so he could catch you. When he did, he swung you around once before gently placing you back down on the ground. "What the heck are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be working all night?"

You smiled and nodded, moving so you two could walk home side by side. "Yep, except the girl that I was covering, Dorothy? She ended up coming in any way. Apparently her date wasn't that good. I know we need the money, but..."

"But, you already worked for ten hours before tacking on her additional nine hour shift, so you deserve to, you know, sleep tonight. I'm sure the other nurses will live without having you there," he said, making you feel much better.

That was thing about you two, is that you were close. Always have been, always will be. At first, when he met Steve Rogers, you were scared he was going to become Bucky's new best friend, and he'd finally shove you away. A lot of your girl friends used to be close with their older bothers, until Aage and puberty caught up and suddenly they weren't.

Not for you two, though. In fact, you felt like you couldn't get any closer. Steve saw that, too, and made sure you felt like his friend. After a bit, you actually became really good friends. He felt like a brother to you, even.

You and Bucky enjoyed your walk home, both trading off talking about your days- his at the dock, yours at the hospital- and all the things that happened, interesting or not. Because to you two, everything was interesting.

That's how it was. You worked most of the day and sometimes the night in the hospital as a nurse, Bucky worked from sun up to sun down on the docks. Up until one day, this is how it worked.

Then, the war was happening.

"Nurses, may I have your attention please." You looked up from the paperwork in front of you to your supervisor, along with every one else. "As you may have heard, there is a war. We, the United States, have decided to join our allies against the Nazis after what happened in December."

You remember that day, hearing about the bombing hours after it occurred. FDR had made a speech. Since that day, you'd been scared for Bucky. He was a great draft candidate.

"Well," your supervisor went on, "they need nurses." That caused the murmurs to start. "Since we're in New York, the government is starting the recruitment here. Representatives will be here tomorrow." That caused the gasps and protests.

You were worried about Bucky, but you hadn't even begun to think about how your own profession would be vital to the war effort. And in your mind, there was no doubt you'd be going.

That night, you were released early. There was no need for an explanation.

At home, you broke the news to your parents first. How nothing was confirmed, but to be ready for the news tomorrow.

After, you sat near the door, hoping to catch Bucky when he came in. He'd be exhausted, but he would want to know. From you especially.

The second he walked in the door, you stood up. You fidgeted with your fingers as you waited for him to close and lock the door.

He did and started to turn around with a smile on his face. But when he saw the look on yours, his smile dropped.

"What happened?"

The two of you sat and you told him everything. Despite the fact that you didn't even know if you would be going or not, tears ran down your cheeks. Bucky's eyes weren't dry, either. The two of you knew how this was going to go.

And the next day, you weren't surprised when you were told you'd been "drafted" in a sense for the war effort. They handed you a uniform and told you to go home. Spend the afternoon and night with your loved ones.

The next morning, you'd be heading to training. Because being a nurse in a hospital is very different than being a nurse in a battlefield.

So you walked home. You took the scenic route, enjoying some last moments before going off to war. Gosh, that just sounded scary. But they needed you. A lot of good men needed you.

When Bucky got home from work and saw the uniform, he just hugged you for hours.

"I'm scared, Buck. I- It's war. Nothing like I know. I... I don't know what I'm doing, but I just know I need to do it."

He held you tighter. "I know. I wish I could give you some fantastic advice but I'm scared, too. I can't lose you. So just... just try to get into one of those safer hospitals where you don't actually see the combat."

You chuckled. "Well, I can certainly try my best."

The next morning, Bucky decided he'd take you to the airport, where you'd meet the other nurses and the military officers who'd escort you all to where you're going.

You had an emotional goodbye. Especially because you had no idea when you'd see him next. If you ever would.

The next few weeks were "training", which was really just getting you familiar with some of the homemade medical products and getting each of you more under pressure training. Days were nearly twenty hours long, and you were dead tired at the end of each. But you were serving your country. You knew Steve would do anything to, so you tried to hold your position with pride.

It was getting harder and harder to. Then, nearly a month later, you were being sent overseas to Europe and never had a moment of rest, except for the half hours you could catch here and there to just pass out.

Everything was going insane, and you would hear some chatter from the incoming soldiers about some things happening out there- they were your only news sources. Apparently there was a "super soldier" doing shows to try and rally the troops. They didn't sound successful. Well, to anyone older than five.

It was probably somewhere around a year since you became an army nurse when things finally got interesting. A unit had been captured, which was heavy on everyone's shoulders. You didn't know specifics, but did you have to?

Then, a while later- time didn't exist to you, you had no idea how long it was between events- commotion was happening.

You weren't tending to anyone emergent, so you stepped out of the tent to see what was happening. And by the looks of it, it was the missing unit, having walked back to safety.

The applause had you smiling and nearly giddy. Then you heard calls for doctors and nurses, so you hurried out there to help the injured. Same old. Until...

"(Y/n)!"

The voice made you freeze, because you knew it. Of course you knew it. But there was no way...

You spun around finally, and saw a stunned Bucky standing there, surrounding by a parting crowd, all looking at you.

"Bucky...?" you breathed, tears immediately coming to your eyes.

Your body acted on instinct, carrying you to him on running legs. The world disappeared once Bucky captured you in his arms and spun you around. Sobs of happiness racked your body as you held him tight.

"Oh my god... I never thought... I didn't think..." You didn't finish those sentences. He was here and he was alive.

He knew what you were thinking anyways. Typical. "I know, me too. I am so happy to see you," Bucky said, holding his own emotions back. He was certainly better at that than you were.

Finally, you two parted, and that's when you looked over at the person standing next to him. "Geez Louise, Steve?!" you exclaimed, shock written all over your face, the tears finally stopping.

He was no longer the scrawny little guy that had a heart to big to fit in his chest. Nope, he was taller than Bucky now and rather... muscular, one could say.

A giant smile finally broke onto your face and you brought Steve into a hug. It felt weird, having to get up on your tiptoes to do so, but he still had the same hugs. He was still your Steve, who you'd always think of as a little bother. Even if he was no longer little.

"What the hell happened to you?" you asked, pulling away.

He opened his mouth, attempting to say something about five hundred times before landing on, "I volunteered for a top-secret Super Soldier experiment."

You nodded. "I heard chatter about some kind of super soldier in the medical tents. Speaking of..." Trailing off, you looked the boys over. Steve looked fine, but Bucky had some bleeding by his ear and looked all around exhausted. "Come on, let's check you out."

The boys followed you over to the medical tents and you found an empty bed for Bucky to sit on and looked him over.

He really didn't want to tell you about what had happened, but you needed to know. Not just because you were his twin, but because you were his doctor at the moment.

So he carefully told you. When he started, you felt your knees lock and would have gone down if Steve weren't next to you to hold you up until you could regain composure. Your brother? Being tortured and experimented on? It made you want to puke. You could have.

"Well, I'm so glad Steve was there," you said, after they also recounted how Steve broke many, many rules to go out there and save the 107th. "That rebellious part of you didn't go away then?" you joked, smirking a little as you cleaned up Bucky's ear- which was fine.

They both laughed. "No, no it didn't. I can just back it up a bit better now," Steve said. It made you laugh.

However, they couldn't stay forever. Steve was Captain America, and Bucky was no doubt going to follow him into battle. You wish you could do the same, but you couldn't just leave to be their personal nurse. Your job was right where you were.

So you stayed and got updates frequently. The other nurses at first were jealous, until you just out and said Bucky was your brother. Then they all wanted to be set up with him, which made you gag.

You got similar comments about Steve, but according to Bucky, he had his heart set on an English agent. And it seemed as though she felt the same.

"I'm sorry, Gertrude, but I'm not going to set you up with my brother. That's just weird and I don't like to think about it," you said one day as you tended to a soldier's upper arm cut.

Gertrude, someone who had become a pretty good friend to you, was at the bed next to yours changing a soldier's dressing. "But he's so handsome! None of the men look like that back in my small town. This is my shot at finding a man whom I actually might like," she said.

You just laughed and shook your head, finishing with the soldier on the bed.

"Ms. Barnes?"

You looked up, seeing a general standing at the entrance to the tent. "Yes sir, how can I be of... assistance..."

The sentence faded away as you saw what he was holding. A letter. Whenever you got a letter from Bucky and Steve, you always went a got it. No one- especially not a general- brought it to you.

"Sir?" you asked, your jaw already starting to quiver. You knew, but god you hoped and prayed you were wrong.

His solemn look and official manner, however, told you that you were right. It was what he said next that hammered the final nail into the coffin.

"I'm so sorry."

Suddenly you couldn't see, your vision being blurred with tears. Sobs broke free from your throat and you collapsed to the ground.

Someone was next to you in an instant, holding you and letting you sob into them. They held you close, trying to console you, but your sobs were so loud you couldn't hear any of the words.

You lost Bucky. You lost your twin brother.

The next few weeks were a blur of a bunch of nothing. After a few days to grieve, you moved through the motions with barely any thought. Everyone noticed the shift and everyone knew why. They'd never understand how.

It felt like a part of you had been ripped away. There was a sudden emptiness to you. You lost him.

Then, a bit later, the news of Captain America's sacrifice came around. But while everyone grieved Captain America's sacrifice, you grieved for Steve Rogers, the kid who never turned down a fight because his heart was just too big. Even as a new man, he always stayed true to himself, and helped win the war with his sacrifice.

At some point, you received Bucky's dog tags. You decided to wear them always, hidden under your blouse or your uniform.

Once the war was done, the military asked that you stay on with them. You agreed. What else did you have? Once some time had passed, you turned from a depressed girl into a stone cold woman. People were scared of you.

Even so, you found a husband and had a family. Once you had a house, you made a little memorial for Bucky. On a shelf in your room stood a picture of you and Bucky when you were kids, having fun at Coney Island. There was another picture of him and Steve in their uniforms after Steve saved the 107th. You draped his dog tags over that one.

For decades you remained in service to the US military, mainly sticking with the army. You went from being a nurse at base camps to being out on the battlefield, near the front lines, helping soldiers right then and there. Your service earned you a lot of appreciation and recognition.

Then, decades later, when Steve was defrosted and living his life with Bucky who was starting to be able to shed Hydra ties, they took a chance and looked you up, finding everything you did.

"She really did some amazing stuff, huh?" Steve whispered one day as the two men stood in front of a museum display, one dedicated to you.

Bucky just hummed, not really listening. Instead, he was looking at every single picture. "She's not smiling. Anywhere," Bucky said, sadness washing over him. "Even when she's being recognized. It's like... it's like she has a face of stone."

You were one of the first things he started to remember when he started regaining control of himself again. It was your smile that haunted him for a while. But it wasn't bad, it just made him sad he couldn't remember who belonged to that smile. Then, he remembered you. That was a huge turning point for him.

"Once she lost her brother, she lost a lot of her will." The men turned and saw the person who spoke. A much older woman. She turned to look at them and smiled. "I knew her during the War. Since she was older than me, she took me under her wing. She was such a beautiful soul."

The woman smiled as she reminisced, but then suddenly got sad. "The day she got the letter of her brother's passing, she changed. I don't know if I ever saw her smile again, at least not until she got married and had a family. But even then, they always seemed so sad."

Bucky felt something in him move. "She had a family?" he asked, his voice small.

The woman nodded. "Two children, a boy and a girl."

Steve thanked the woman and gently guided Bucky away. "Do you want to try and get into contact with them?"

Bucky nodded.

A couple days later, they were knocking on the address they found for the daughter. It was a beautiful house, and sounded like it was maybe her childhood home. So you would have lived there at some point for a while. Bucky hoped to find traces of you anywhere he could.

When the door opened, the girl had a polite smile on her face and a phone in her hand. Both dropped in shock at the people at her door.

The men thought it was because of Steve, but she was looking straight at Bucky. "You... you..." When the words didn't work, she hurried off, leaving the door open, and then hurried back with a frame clutched in her hands. "This is you."

She held the frame out and Bucky gently took it. Inside was a picture of him and you. His chest deflated and the saddest of smiles came onto his face, tears accompanying it.

Somehow, the daughter- Evelyn- managed to put herself back together before either Bucky or Steve could. "Would you like to come in? I can tell you all about her?" she asked gently.

Bucky looked up at her, nodded. "Yes, yes please."

A/n: Okay, first, I am sorry this is late. It's been a weekend and day. Second, I am sorry this is kind of depressing. It was happy at first, but because I don't feel good/have been sick since Friday, it got more depressing. plus, it's hard not to.

But I hope you liked it anyway! I love Bucky, and I know he has a sister in the comics and it's criminal we don't see that in the MCU. He'd be the best brother of all time.

Also, for those of you still reading, I start classes Wednesday! The fact that I'm halfway done with year two of college is freaky and I don't like it.

See you next week Lovelies!!!!!!
