Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace

The Avengers went on many different kinds of missions, from taking down hidden Hydra bases to dealing with threats that arose and were big enough to need the power of the Avengers. Hardly was there ever a mission big enough for the whole group to go.

Well, today was that day.

"Do we know what we're dealing with?" you asked, grabbing your arsenal of weapons and comms device.

Steve shook his head. "An enhanced individual is all we know. The details are few because hardly anyone can get close to this guy without getting the bad end of the stick."

"I'm sorry," Tony asked, turning around in the pilot's chair. "What does 'bad end of the stick' even mean?"

Another shake of the head, this time accompanied with a sigh. "I wish I could say. Whatever it is, we have to be prepared, okay?"

There was a collective agreement before the door opened and everyone fanned out. You were paired with Natasha and Clint, watching some of the tight corners. Tony and Vision took on watching the skies. Steve and Wanda were going to try and get the dude first, and hope he didn't escape.

Hulk smashed, and was ready to smash the guy if needed. Overall, it was a lot of people for one guy. This was a pretty bad dude.

"Hey, what's happening?" you asked, everyone being radio silent for too long. You shared a quick look with Natasha and then Clint.

"We have- we have an issue!"

Steve's strained voice was all that was needed to get everyone running into the building. What you didn't know, was it was a trap.

Moments after arriving into the building, your sight went dark and you crashed to the ground. Everything sounded muffled and there was a high pitched ringing. You were breathing heavy and could feel the hard ground on your back.

After gathering your thoughts, you blinked rapidly and found your vision clearing up. "What the..." you mumbled, sitting up carefully and rubbing the ack of your head.

You looked to your right and saw Natasha sitting up as well. "What the hell happened?" you asked her.

She turned to you and gave you a funny look. "Pochemu ty govorish' na frantsuzskom?"

However, you didn't understand a word she just spoke. "Huh?" Many thoughts raced through your head, thinking maybe you ended up with a concussion and that's why her words just sounded garbled to you.

"Frantsuzskiy. Ty govorish' po-frantsuzski. Pochemu tak slozhno ponyat'..." Nat asked, sighing and looking around the room at the others.

Still, nothing worked. "Natasha, I genuinely cannot understand you right now," you said.

She thought for a second, then something clicked- you could see it on her face. "YA govoryu po-russki. Der'mo. Pochemu ya ne mogu pereklyuchit'sya..." Natasha mumbled to herself. Again, it was all gibberish to you.

"Ugh, che diavolo...?" The new voice caused you to turn your head and see who else woke up. It was Tony, and he also made no sense. "Quello che è successo? Dove è andato?" A couple words felt vaguely right, but you were still confused.

"What?" you asked.

He gave you a funny look. "Cosa?"

Natasha, off to the side, started standing up and going over to others. She helped a waking Wanda up to her feet. "Ty v poryadke?"

Wanda nodded. "Áno, cítim sa dobre. Čo sa stalo?"

You looked over at the girls. "Wait a second, you can understand each other?" you asked. How could they but not the rest of you?

Natasha shrugged. "My govorim na ochen' blizkikh yazykakh. YA govoryu po-russki, a ona govorit, kak mne kazhetsya, po-sokovski, chto-to, chto yavlyayetsya otvetvleniyem russkogo."

Even though her explanation was probably wonderful, you looked at her, head tilted in confusion. Wanda also looked confused, but it was because she knew what Nat said and was just lost.

You looked over at Clint, who was moving his hands furiously. They seemed to make sense to him, but to you, you had no clue what he was trying to do. So, you moved on.

"Hey, a bheil a h-uile duine ceart gu leòr?" The newest voice was Steve, who had been getting himself off the floor. Next to him, Bruce was slowly waking up, so Steve was going to help him. "Dè a tha a' tachairt?"

Bruce gave him a funny look, as did you. "Uh, Cap? Why are you... what?" Bruce asked, rubbing that back of his head.

You lit up. "You make sense!" you practically yelled. That caught everyone's attention, and they all stopped their mumbling and grumbling to focus on you and Bruce. "You're speaking English!"

"Yes... and you're speaking French. Why?" he asked.

"What? I'm speaking French? Man... haven't pulled that out since I was in high school," you commented, remembering how after you left for college, you stopped speaking as much French since everyone around you spoke English.

Bruce just shook his head. "Okay, so you're speaking French. I think Steve's speaking in Gaelic? Which I can't understand for the life of me. At least I dabbled in French in high school."

Tony stood and started walking toward Bruce. "Steve che parla gaelico? Quanto poco americano da parte sua. Perché?" he seemed to ask.

"Okay, and you're speaking Italian I think?"

Natasha nodded and she and Wanda made their ways to the group. "YA ne mogu ponyat' Stiva, no ostal'nykh poka mogu. Gel'skiy ne to, chto mne nuzhno bylo imet' za poyasom v S.H.I.E.L.D."

Again, Bruce just looked lost. "And you sound Russian. Fantastic. This will be great fun."

Then, Clint joined the group. He had yet to say anything, but was still moving his hands like crazy. Natasha seemed to understand what he was saying, nodding along, but she was the only one.

"ASL? Okay... clearly that guy did something to us," Bruce said with a sigh. "Let's just... let's get back to base and figure all this out."

So, everyone piled onto the Quinjet. When Vision got in, he was only speaking in numbers. Bruce, for the first time so far, nodded along. "Binary code. At least I can understand one of you."

Back at the Upstate Facility, everyone was a clamoring mess of all sorts of languages. No one could really understand each other. Even Bruce missed some of Vision's binary code and some words in Sokovian were different enough to Natasha that she had no clue what Wanda was talking about.

The only thing they all knew? They were all freaking out.

"Okay!" Bruce called out, getting everyone to quiet down. They could all understand him at least. "I think I know what happened. After reviewing some things and files and whatnot, I believe this magical being has done something to us that forces us to speak in our first language."

You made a face. "Really? Then why does Tony speak Italian and Steve Gaelic? Those are their first languages?" you asked. Other than those two curveballs, the theory made sense to you.

Natasha was born and spent early years in Russia, Wanda grew up in Sokovia, Clint and his sign language, Vision being a robot and speaking in numbers, and you grew up in France before moving to the States when you were twelve.

"Ti mostra quanto fossero genitori i miei genitori," Tony mumbled, but no one could understand the Italian.

Steve hadn't spoken too much, just sort of sadly mumbled to himself every now and then.

"Chto eto za plan?" Natasha asked, despite the fact that Bruce didn't understand. Habits were hard to break.

Bruce sighed. "Okay, I think you want a plan. Which is what I'm working on. I need to do some scans on all of you and see if anything got messed up within your DNA. If yes, then I can go from there. If no... then we might be stuck for a bit longer."

Clint sighed something, and it had Nat nodding in agreement. You just nodded and waited for it all to be over.

This entire thing had you going nuts. But it also made you realize how much you had strayed from who you used to be. Your French background. It started to slip when your family moved here, but then it really faded when you left for college and stopped speaking French. Even as an Avenger it hasn't felt necessary.

It made you miss who you used to be.

When the scanning was all done, Bruce pushed you all out so he could focus on studying everything and finding some answer.

Everyone was "banished" to the common room. With the only English-speaker gone, it was hard to communicate with each other. Natasha only understood so much, and that wasn't the most helpful to everyone else.

You and Tony say, carefully speaking. Every now and then, one of you would say a word the other understood and get really excited.

"This whole thing has been weird. I should go visit home in France after this. Reminisce for a bit, you know?" you said, as if Tony would be able to answer.

He did, but you had no idea if it was even close to answering what you had said. "Quasi mi manca parlare italiano. È stato divertente condividere segreti con la mia tata. Poi è stata licenziata e io ne ho avuto uno che parlava inglese."

Everyone sort of jabbered on, both to each other and to themselves. You looked and saw Steve sitting off to the side, speaking the only language Nat didn't understand. He looked extra lonely, and you hoped this stupid spell would go away so you could talk to him and know what he was saying, and for him to know what you were saying.

After hours, and a decision to just put something on the TV, Bruce came walking into the room.

The group stood up. "So?" you asked.

He just looked at you for a second and nodded. "I think I found something, which means I think I know how to fix the problem. It'll take another half hour before it's done, but I've made a drink. It's made to hopefully correct the abnormality created and we should all go back to normal!"

Everyone let out small cheers and smiled. You were just excited to know what everyone had been trying to tell you. And who knows, maybe this'll get you all to open up to each other about who you all were before the Avengers.

When the half hour was up, Tony volunteered to go first, which didn't surprise you at all considering he likes it when people actually talk to him in more than just random phrases.

He took a drink and then took a deep breath. "Did it work?"

When everyone nodded, Bruce let out a small cheer and got everyone else their own glasses. You all drank rather excitedly to ward off the effects of whatever magic spell that guy cast on you.

"How we lookin?" you asked, and you could tell by the look on Bruce's face that he knew what you asked, and that it had worked.

Nat finished her drink off. "So far so good..." The smiles kept on the assumption that the drink was working.

Steve nodded. "Yeah, I actually know what everyone's saying," he said. His usually demeanor was down, however.

As the others were drinking, you pulled Steve aside. "Hey, you okay? You've seemed pretty down..."

He sighed. "Not really. Gaelic... my mother was an immigrant. This was the first language she taught me, and then followed it with English. After she passed... I never spoke it again. I forgot most of it. Today made me realize how much I miss life before Captain America. When it was simple."

You smiled sadly at him, then brought him into a hug. "I'm so sorry, Steve. But, hey! You could start learning it again. Get back to where you used to be," you offered as the two of you pulled apart.

He smiled. "Can you teach me how to do that? I'm sure there's an app somewhere I can use."

"Of course I'll show you. For now, let's go talk to the others and learn something about each other."
