Detention has somehow always found its way to you.
Every single week wouldn't feel like a week if you didn't visit the detention room and listen to Captain America preaching about following the rules (even if you know damn well he didn't use to follow any rule whatsoever).
Today, however, things have just gotten more interesting when you see the infamous Pietro Maximoff. Now, the first thing that comes up to people's minds when someone says the 'infamous' someone, they'll think of this person as anyone else but a nerd. Except that's exactly what he is.
You've never been too fond of him, though you're not sure why. He's handsome, he's tall, he's sort-of-maybe your type...
Huh. Why don't you like him?
"Hello," he greets politely, disturbing your train of thought. "What brought you here?"
"Oh, um..." you say, shocked at how someone is actually asking you why you're in the detention room as if you've never been here at all, "I defended a girl from the principal because he was giving her shit for wearing a skirt that's above her knee."
"And he put you in detention?" Pietro asks. "That doesn't seem like a good enough reason."
You shrug. "I'm used to it anyway," you reply simply, fiddling with your fingers. "If I have to come here and listen to Captain America just because I wanted justice, then so be it."
"I see that listening to Captain America has had its effects on you," he says, chuckling, making you laugh. "In all seriousness, though, being here affects your overall grade. Greatly."
"I don't really care about grades, as you've probably heard." The insults from the people you used to call friends ring in your ears, telling you that you're not even trying, and that you're a straight-up failure.
"I don't believe everything I hear," he says, like the smart person he is.
Sometimes you wish you could steal some of his intelligence.
"What people say about you doesn't dictate who you are," he explains. "I used to be bullied, but I told myself that I can be who I wanna be, no matter what they say."
"Sounds easy when you say it."
"Sometimes I just shout 'Positive Mental Attitude!' in my head to get myself back on track."
"Sometimes you what?" you ask, dumbfounded. "I genuinely thought that only worked in movies."
"Well, it doesn't," he says with a smile, and you try your best not to smile back at him. "It works in real life."
Something shifts in your mind and you shake your head. "What am I doing?" you whisper to yourself.
"We're talking, Y/N," Pietro says lowly, "It completely fine if you don't wanna talk, though."
"No, I mean," you pause, gathering your thoughts, "I do. I want to. This is just the first time I've felt so... weak."
"You? Calling yourself weak?" He scoffs. Pietro Maximof himself. Scoffing? Today really is interesting. "I think you're many things, but weak isn't one fo them.
"I've seen you stand up against the others. I've seen you stand up for others. I've seen you hold yourself in such high standards when it comes to rules and regulations, and how you'd complain about how the dress codes are unfair. I've seen you hold back tears when the teacher told you that you're not doing so well in class.
"Now, I don't know you that well, but I know you well enough to know that you do care about grades. And I know you well enough to know that you're a good person.
"So, please do me a favor and just... stop putting on the front that you're so strong. It's okay to be vulnerable sometimes. Let people help you, Y/N."
"They don't understand, nor do they bother to try to," you say with a sigh. "I know what you're tryna do, Maximoff."
"What?"
"You're trying to make me like you," you accuse boldly.
He laughs. "Well, that's not exactly the main reason, but I might've had that in mind."
A small smile makes its way to your lips. "Maybe it's working."
"I'm glad," he says, flashing a toothy grin.
"So, why are you here?" you ask him.
He chuckles shyly, his hand finding its way to the back of his neck. "I accidentally screamed in the library."
"You accidentally screamed in the library."
"Well, I mean, um..." he stammers, red covering his cheeks. "It was a dare... and the librarian happened to be sleeping... and someone told on me, so now here I am."
"Are you worried about your grades, then?"
"To be honest, not really."
"'Cause all your other grades are enough to compensate for this one?"
"No! I mean... kind of, but that's not the point. I'm glad to learn that the school's 'worst' student isn't an all-around asshole."
"Did you just curse?" you ask, mindblown. "Pietro Maximoff curses?"
"Yes," he laughs. "Being a good student doesn't mean being robots."
"So you're saying that everyone curses."
"Not necessarily," he replies, laughing lightly. "I just mean like, I have emotions too, and sometimes I curse because of said emotions."
"That's fair," you conclude.
"Yeah," he sticks his hand out, "I don't think we've actually properly introduced ourselves."
You laugh, shaking his hand.
"Hey, Y/N. I'm Pietro. Nice to meet you."
"Hi, Pietro. Nice to meet you too," you reply, and he shakes your hand firmly.
"From now on, you sit with me during lunch, okay? The lunch table is lonely with me being the only one sitting on it."
"For sure," you say, looking at him properly, for the first time these past half an hour. You finally notice how blue his eyes are. "But what about your friends?"
"They have their respective groups," he says simply. "I'm just the backup friend."
"Maybe you can be my non-backup friend, then."
"And you'll be mine," he says, grinning. He sticks his hand out once more. "Come on, shake on it."
You shake your head in disbelief as you laugh along, shaking his hand.
Maybe I do like him.
