Chapter 6: A Chance to Bring People Back
Natasha, who was back to having red hair but with blonde highlights, just finished making her a PB & J sandwich as she listened to Rocket's update. There were holographic calls from Nebula, Rocket, Jamie, Okoye, Carol (with a shorter haircut), and Rhodey in that order.
(A/N Jamie's outfit (minus the purse).)
"Yeah, we boarded that highly suspect warship that Danvers pinged," Rocket explained.
"It was an infectious garbage scowl," Nebula added.
"So, thanks for the hot tip," Rocket remarked to Carol.
"Well, you were closer," Carol smirked.
"Yeah. And we smell like garbage," Rocket commented.
"That must've been fun," Jamie stated, trying to lighten the mood a little.
That earned some soft chuckles.
"You get a reading on those tremors?" Natasha asked Okoye.
"It was a mild subduction under the African plate," Okoye answered.
"Do we have a visual? How are we handling it?" Natasha wondered.
"Nat, it's an earthquake under the ocean. We handle it by not handling it," Okoye responded.
"Carol, are we seeing you here next month?" Natasha asked Carol.
"Not likely," Carol shook her head.
"What, you gonna get a new haircut?" Rocket gave a snarky comment.
"Cool it, Rocket," Jamie told him.
"Listen fur-face, I'm covering a lot of territory. The things that are happening on Earth, are happening everywhere, on thousands of planets," Carol said with irritation.
"You took a point, you took a point," Rocket murmured to himself.
"So you might not see me for a long time," Carol replied.
"What about you, Jamie? Anything in New Asgard? Thor up for anything?" Natasha asked.
"I don't think so. Thor has been in depression mode since the fight. He doesn't act like it, but I can tell. Plus, someone has to help keep things in check around here," Jamie answered.
"Alright. Uh, well. This channel is always active. So, anything goes sideways...anyone's making trouble where they shouldn't...comes through me," Natasha told them.
"Okay," Rocket said.
"You got it," Jamie nodded.
"Alright," Natasha responded.
They started signing off one at a time.
"Good luck," Carol said before ending the call.
This left only Rhodey on the line to talk with Natasha alone.
"Where are you?" Natasha asked.
"Mexico. The federales found a room filled with bodies. Looks like a bunch of cartel guys. Never even had the chance to get their guns off," Rhodey answered.
"It's probably a rival gang," she stated.
"Except it isn't. It's definitely Barton. What he's done here, what he's been doing for the last few years... I mean, the scene that he left...I gotta tell you, there's a part of me that doesn't even want to find him," he explained.
Natasha felt tears forming while thinking about Clint. She ate part of her sandwich to cover it up.
"Will you find out where he's going next?" Natasha requested.
"Nat..." Rhodey began to protest.
"Please," she pleaded.
He sighed then said reluctantly before ending the call, "Okay."
Once off, Natasha cried, but still tried to hold the tears back.
"You know I'd offer to cook you dinner but you seem pretty miserable already," Steve's voice sounded.
Both he and Y/N stepped into view as Natasha wiped the tears from her face.
"You two here to do your laundry?" Natasha sniffled.
"To see a friend," Steve answered.
"Clearly, your friend is fine," Natasha remarked.
"Bullshit," Y/N said while handing her a tissue, looked to see Steve give her small glare, and said, "Yeah. I know. I know. 'Watch your language'."
Natasha took it while Y/N gave her side hug, rubbing her arm in comfort.
"I'm not usually a hugger," Natasha remarked.
"I don't care, Nat; you're getting one," Y/N responded.
That made her and Steve chuckle a bit.
"You know I saw a pod of whales when I was coming up the bridge," Steve informed.
"In the Hudson?" Natasha questioned.
"There's fewer ships, cleaner water," he pointed out.
"You know, if you're about to tell me to look on the bright side. Um...I'm about you to hit you in the head with a peanut butter sandwich," she threatened jokingly.
"You gotta wait in line for that one. I'm his sister; I can do it first," Y/N said.
"Sorry. Force of habit," Steve smiled a little.
They sat down across from her as he threw his jacket to the side.
"You know, I keep telling everyone they should move on and...grow. Some do. But not us," Steve pointed out.
"If I move on, who does this?" Natasha asked.
"Maybe it doesn't need to be done," Y/N told her.
"I used to have nothing. Then I got this. This job...this family. And I was...I was better because of it. And even though...they're gone...I'm still trying to be better," Natasha explained, deep in her thoughts.
"We three need to get a life," Steve commented.
"You two first," Natasha smirked.
"I get it. Why you're not moving on. I can't either. With Bucky gone, part of my life is missing. I feel like I'm in a tunnel, looking for the light at the end of it, but never finding it. But I keep looking. That's why I never took my wedding rings off. He was my first love and he'll be my last," Y/N explained, earning a smile from Natasha and Steve.
Then the camera footage popped up, showing Scott Lang with his Quantum Realm Van behind him.
"Uh...Oh! Hi. Hi! Is anyone home? This is Scott Lang. We met a few years ago, at the airport? In Germany? I got really big, and I had my mask on. You wouldn't recognize me," he called.
"Is this an old message?" Steve asked in shock as he and Y/N stood up.
"It's the front gate," Natasha answered as she stood up as well.
"Well, let's bring him in," Y/N urged them.
"Ant-man? Ant-man, I know you know that. I need to talk to you guys," Scott called.
They let him in and he was just pacing worriedly in front of Steve, Y/N, and Natasha.
"Scott. Are you okay?" Steve asked.
"Yeah. I'm fine," Scott answered.
"He doesn't look fine to me," Y/N commented.
"Have you ever studied Quantum Physics?" Scott blurted out.
"Only to make conversation," Natasha said.
"Alright. So...five years ago, right before Thanos, I was in a place called the Quantum Realm. The Quantum Realm is like its own microscopic universe. To get in there, you have to be incredibly small. Hope, she's my...She was my..." Scott tried to say, but instead continued, "She was supposed to pull me out. And then Thanos happened, and I got stuck in there."
"I'm sorry. That must've been a very long five years," Natasha replied.
"Yeah, but that's just it. For me, it was five hours," Scott told them.
The three looked shocked at this.
"Oh my god," Y/N said.
"See, the rules of the Quantum Realm aren't like they are up here. Everything is unpredictable," Scott said then commented, "Is that anybody's sandwich? I'm starving."
He took Natasha's sandwich and ate it.
"Scott, what are you talking about?" Steve asked.
"What I'm saying is, time works differently in the Quantum Realm. The only problem is right now, we don't have a way to navigate it. But what if we did? I can't stop thinking about it. What if, we could somehow control the chaos, and we could navigate it? What if there was a way to enter the Quantum Realm at a certain point in time but then exit at another point in time? Like...Like before Thanos," Scott explained.
"So you're saying that we could go back in time through the Quantum Realm and make things back to where they were?" Y/N guessed.
"Basically yeah," Scott nodded then added, "We can even bring one person back who died before the snap."
"Wait, are you talking about a time machine?" Steve asked.
"No. No, of course not. No, not a time machine. It's more like a...Yeah, a time machine. I know it's crazy. But I can't stop thinking about it. There's gotta be some way...There's gotta be..., it's crazy," Scott finished.
"I get e-mails from a raccoon, so nothing sounds crazy anymore," Natasha commented.
"So who do we talk to about this?" Scott asked.
"I think we know the perfect guy for this. And I also think I know someone who would be interested in bringing that one person back," Y/N answered.

A/N I think you guys can guess who that one person is. 😜
