Chapter 33: Time to Say Goodbye

In the woods, Bruce, Sam, Steve, Bucky, and Y/N prepared the Quantum portal for Steve to return the stones. Bucky and Y/N held hands as they waited for that to come.

(A/N Your outfit.)

"Remember...You have to return the stones at the exact moment you got them. Or you're gonna open up a bunch of nasty alternative realities," Bruce said.

"Don't worry, Bruce. Clip all the branches," Steve assured.

"You know, when I had the gauntlet, the stones, I wanted to bring her back. I miss them, man," Bruce confessed.

"Me, too," Steve nodded.

"You know, if you want, I can come with you," Sam offered.

"You're a good man, Sam. This one's on me, though," Steve politely declined.

Steve then went over to Bucky and Y/N.

"Don't do anything stupid 'till I get back," he told Bucky, remembering when he left for the war.

"How can I? You're taking all the stupid with you," Bucky responded.

Y/N giggled and said, "I'm glad my two favorite men are in my life again."

They all got in a group hug.

"Gonna miss you, Buddy," Bucky whispered to him.

"It's gonna be okay, Buck," Steve whispered back.

Steve went over to the Quantum portal and put the Quantum suit.

"How long is this gonna take?" Sam asked.

"For him? As long as he needs. For us? Five seconds," Bruce answered.

Steve picked up Mjolnir.

"Ready, Cap? Alright. We'll meet you back here, okay?" Bruce asked.

"You bet," Steve nodded.

"Going quantum. Three, two, one..." Bruce counted down.

Steve disappeared into the Quantum portal at that.

"And returning in, five, four, three, two, one..." Bruce counted down again.

But this time, Steve didn't come back. This worried everyone.

"Where is he?" Sam asked.

"I don't know. He blew right by his time stamp. He should be here," Bruce answered.

Then Bucky looked over towards the lake. He got a little closer to get a better look.

"Well, get him back," Sam said.

"I'm trying," Bruce remarked.

"Oh god," Y/N whispered, a little panicked.

"Get him the hell back," Sam almost yelled.

"Hey, I said, I'm trying!" Bruce almost shouted.

"Sam. Y/N," Bucky called.

Y/N and Sam went over to Bucky where they all saw an old man, sitting on a log. They all got a little closer before Sam and Bucky look at each other.

"Go ahead," Bucky told him.

Bucky smiled as Sam went up to the old man, seeing it was an elderly Steve Rogers.

"Cap?" Sam called.

"Hi, Sam," Old Steve greeted.

Old Steve looked at Sam. In realization, Y/N cupped her mouth shut as tears started to appear in her eyes. In reassurance, Bucky held her close. In response, she laid her head on his shoulder.

"So did something go wrong, or did something go right?" Sam wondered.

"Well, after I put the stones back, I thought...Maybe...I'll try some of that life Tony was telling me to get," Old Steve answered.

"How did that work out for you?" Sam asked.

"It was beautiful," Steve smiled in content.

"I'm happy for you. Truly," Sam nodded with a smile of his own.

"Thank you," Steve thanked.

"Only thing bumming me out is the fact I have to live in a world without Captain America," Sam told him.

"Oh...That reminds me..." Old Steve remembered, brought out his shield, then told Sam, "Try it on."

Sam looked over to Bucky and Y/N, who nodded. So Sam held Steve's shield.

"How's it feel?" Old Steve asked.

"Like it's someone else's," Sam answered.

"It isn't," Old Steve insisted.

Sam tried his best to keep the tears that were forming back.

"Thank you. I'll do my best," Sam assured.

"That's why it's yours," Old Steve told him and they shook hands.

That's when Sam noticed the wedding ring on Old Steve's left finger.

"You wanna tell me about her?" Sam smirked.

"No. No, I don't think I will," Old Steve just smiled.

Y/N smiled, knowing what he meant. At that, Steve remembered when he and his wife, Peggy, were dancing in their home to "It's Been a Long, Long Time" performed by Harry James and His Orchestra.

Then Old Steve turned around to see Bucky and Y/N. She looked at him then back to Bucky.

"Go on," Bucky whispered to her.

She smiled at him, kissed his cheek, then sat beside her older brother with some tears in her eyes.

"What am I going to do without my big brother?" she asked.

"Whether I'm dead or alive, I'll always be there for you. I just wanted to spend time with the one person I've truly fallen in love with. You and Bucky can have that now," he told her.

Y/N looked back at Bucky with a smile, which he returned. Then she looked back at Steve.

"Y/N, you will be fine without me. You even told me when you wanted to go look for Bucky that it was a good opportunity for you to be on your own. Now you get that chance," Steve told her.

"But I didn't mean to exclude my brother out of my life," Y/N pointed out.

He put an arm around her, kissed her forehead, then said, "It'll be okay. I promise."

She nodded at him for that.

"I missed you," he told her.

She chuckled and said, "I missed you too. Even though it felt like ten seconds."

They laughed lightly at that. Then Steve brought out Mjölnir and handed it to her.

"Thor wanted us to have it, but I don't need it anymore," he told her.

She took it then started crying and they hugged each other.

"I love you, big bro," Y/N sobbed.

"I love you too, little sis," Steve told her.

They parted then she helped him up. Sam took over as Y/N went over to Bucky.

"You gonna be okay?" he asked her as she put Mjölnir down.

"Yeah. I will. He spent a fair amount of time without me; I think I can do the same," she said.

He nodded and gently took her left hand, gently rubbing his thumb on her fingers. He then saw her wedding rings and smiled at her.

"You know, we never did get a honeymoon," Bucky pointed out.

Y/N giggled, leaned in, kissed his lips, then asked, "Where to then?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A/N The End! You can pick your honeymoon with Bucky!
