The Fortune Teller
It's been a couple of days since Adara met Katara and Sokka. It wasn't exactly the best meeting and Adara knows that it's going to take a while for Sokka and Katara to trust her. About three times already, Sokka has accused Adara of being a spy for the Fire Nation and sending them messages, but really she was just practicing her archery in the woods and wanted some peace and quiet. Right now, they were next to a river and Adara was reading a book that she bought at a village yesterday. Suddenly, a fish started jumping out of the water.
. "Look!" Katara exclaimed while pointing at the fish. Adara observed the fish more closely and she recognized what the fish was. It was a se tu. They were fairly common in these parts and Adara remembered going on fishing trips with her father to try to catch one.
"He is taunting us! You are so going to be dinner!" Sokka exclaimed.
"Just a warning. They're extremely difficult to catch because they are very smart. My father and I used to try catch them and we've only been successful once." Adara warned. Sokka turned to her with a smug look on his face and stated,
"Well, you and your father never had the training of those from the water tribe! Watch and observe, Adara! I'll just go grab my fishing pole and that fish will be dinner in no time." He ran to grab the fishing pole from the tent, but was unsuccessful at casting it into the water.
"Wow. I'm so amazed at your brilliant fishing skills." Adara said.
Sokka glared at her and said, "That's because there's no line. You must've take it!"
Adara was about to punch Sokka, but Aang spoke up, "Actually, Sokka. I took it because I didn't think that you would need it." He holds up a beautifully crafted necklace decorated with a red flower. Adara groaned because now they would have to buy some more fishing line at the next village.
"Aw, it's all tangled!" Sokka complained.
"Not tangled. Woven! I made you a necklace, Katara. I thought since you lost your other one..." Aang paused and displayed the neckalce while holding it between his hands and flashed a toothy grin. Aw, that was sweet of him. Adara couldn't help, but wonder what happened to Katara's other necklace. Guess that there was a lot that Adara would have to learn about the group assuming that they would trust her enough to tell her these things.
Katara smiled and grabbed the necklace while admiring it, "Thanks, Aang. I love it."
"Great, Aang. Maybe instead of saving the world, you can go into the jewelry-making business." Sokka sarcastically suggested.
"I don't see why I can't do both." Aang stated. Oof. The boy found a loop hole. While Katara was trying on the necklace, Sokka and Adara turned back to the lake and saw the fish continued jumped around displaying an almost an acrobatic skills. Adara went to grab her bow and arrow while Sokka threw his fishing pole into the river to try and spear the fish. He was unsuccessful.
"Stop taunting me!" Sokka shouted. He was about to run into the water with his dagger, but Adara stopped him.
She took a couple steps in front of him and said, "Stand back, boomerang guy. I'll show you how it's done." Adara aimed for the fish being careful to watch the fish's movement. She fired and... she missed the shot. Adara stood aghast at what just happened. She missed! After all these years of training as a Yuyan Archer, she STILL couldn't catch this stupid fish!
"You've got to be kidding me!" Adara yelled.
Sokka started laughing and said, "I can't believe that one of the legendary Yuyan archer's actually missed their target! Wow. Maybe you guys aren't as good as people say you are." He continued to laugh, but Adara quickly grabbed two arrows and aimed at Sokka. She pinned him to the tree with the arrows faster than you could se tu. Adara marched straight up to Sokka and growled, "You were saying."
"First of all: OUCH! And, second of all, you still missed your target, but point taken." Sokka simply stated. Adara grabbed the arrows and freed Sokka from the tree. Sokka grabbed his knife and attempted to catch the fish again.
"So, how do I look?" Adara heard Katara question. She turned and saw that she had put on the necklace. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Aang smiling awkwardly while rubbing the back of his head and saying, "You mean, all of you or just your neck? I mean, because both look great." Adara smirked and realized that the kid had a crush on Katara.
Sokka emerged from the water holding the se tu while saying, "Smoochie, smoochie, someone's in love!" He made kissing noises until the se tu slapped Sokka across the face with it's tail and freed itself. Adara laughed and was glad that she missed her shot otherwise she wouldn't have been able to witness that.
"I ... well, uh ..." Aang stuttered.
"Stop teasing him, Sokka. Aang's just a good friend. A sweet, little guy! Just like Momo." Katara said while patting Aang on the head then, pet Momo. Wow. She is oblivious.
"Thanks." Aang said dismayed. Poor guy. Sokka emerged from the lake with a sour look on his face. Suddenly, everyone heard a loud noise. Aang jumped on a rock that was nearby to see what the commotion was about.
"Someone's being attacked by a platypus bear!" Aang announced. Aang raced ahead of them since he was faster and it took a moment before Adara, Sokka, and, Katara to catch up. The platypus bear kept trying to strike the man it was attacking, but the man had surprisingly quickly reflexes and dodged every move.
"Well, hello there." The man said calmly while dodging another strike, "Nice day, isn't it?" Adara was surprised by how calm the man was while facing that huge beast.
"Make noise! He'll run off!" Aang shouted.
"No, play dead! He'll lose interest!" Sokka yelled.
The bear struck again and the man dodged it while saying, "Whoa, close one!"
"Run downhill, then climb a tree!" Katara shouted.
"No! Stand still and make yourself seem bigger!" Adara exclaimed.
"No, punch him in the bill!" Sokka suggested while demonstrating the move.
"And then run in zig-zags!" Aang continued.
"No need, it's going to be fine." The man said. The platypus bear tried to strike again, but it cut off a large chunk of wood from a near by branch. Adara watched as Aang leaped into the placing himself between the man and the platypus bear. He tried to use airbending to send the bear back, but it didn't do much.
"Whoa there!" Aang told the bear, but the bear only reared up on it's hind legs and let out a loud cry. Adara, Sokka, and Katara were about to go in there to help Aang, but Appa landed behind the ferocious beast and bellowed at the bear, which caused the animal to shake in fear. An egg popped out and the bear ran off and swam into the river.
"Mmm, lunch!" Sokka exclaimed. Adara cheered because she was also really hungry. Sokka continued, "Lucky for you, we came along."
"Thanks, but everything was already under control. Not to worry. Aunt Wu predicted I'd have a safe journey." The man explained. He folded his hands and bowed slightly.
"Aunt who?" Aang questioned again.
"No, Aunt Wu. She's the fortuneteller from my village. Awful nice knowing your future." The calm man stated.
"Wow, it must be. That explains why you were so calm!" Katara said. Adara frowned upon hearing this. She thought that this stuff was complete nonsense.
"But the fortuneteller was wrong! You didn't have a safe journey; you were almost killed!" Sokka exclaimed.
"But I wasn't! All right, have a good one! Oh, and Aunt Wu said if I met any travelers to give them this." The man gave Aang an umbrella and Adara was just hoping that they would leave and continue on their way. That was until Katara spoke up, "Maybe we should go see Aunt Wu and learn our fortunes. It could be fun."
"Please no. That sounds like a complete waste of our time." Adara complained.
"Yeah. As much as I don't like agreeing with Adara, she makes a point. Fortune telling is nonsense!" Sokka exclaimed. Adara's eyes widened. For once, they actually agree on something. Aang opened the package and said, "What do you know? An umbrella!" Then, rain started to pour and Adara's mood soured even more.
"That proves it!" Katara exclaimed.
"Pfft. Lucky guess." Adara said. She covered her arms to try to keep herself warm from the rain.
"No, it doesn't! You can't really tell the future!" Sokka stated.
"I guess you're not really getting wet then." Katara said with a smug look on her face. Adara rolled her eyes. Suddenly, Sokka lost his grip on the egg and it flew through the air and landed back on his head. There goes lunch. Adara sighed as Sokka and her stayed away from Katara and Aang who were shielded by the umbrella.
"Of course she predicted it was going to rain. The sky's been gray all day!" Sokka determined.
"Just admit you two might be wrong, and you can come under the umbrella." Katara said.
"Look, I'm going to predict the future now. It's going to keep drizzling. See?" Adara stated as it continued to drizzle. Suddenly, the rain stopped falling and the sky lightened up. This made Adara very angry. Of course, the rain had to stop then.
"Not everyone has the gift, Adara." Aang said. Adara and Sokka strolled behind Katara and Aang. Appa shook his fur and it got Adara and Sokka even more soaked. This is just great. Soon, they reached the village that the fortune teller lived and a man said, "Aunt Wu is expecting you."
"Really?" Katara wondered. Adara rolled her eyes knowing that it was all just for show. They entered a room and there were four pillows to the right of the room. The four children sat down and awaited their turn. Adara was hoping to get this over with as soon as possible. A young girl in a pink robe with braids that stuck out from both sides stepped through the door and introduced herself,
"My name is Meng and I'm Aunt Wu's assistant." Adara didn't pay too much attention after that until she heard the words curd puffs. That snapped her back into reality as her stomach growled. She raised her hand and said, "Yes please." just as Sokka said, "I'll try a curd puff."
Meng held up her hand and stated, "Just a second. So what's your name?" Adara held back her laughter as she realized that the girl had a crush on Aang and judging from Aang's expression, he wasn't noticing this at all. One thing about Katara and Aang is that they're both completely oblivious when it comes to people liking them and just to prove her point further, Aang answered back flatly,
"Aang."
"That rhymes with Meng! And you've got some pretty big ears, don't you?" Meng exclaimed with excitement. Adara tilted her head. Big ears? What has that got to do with anything.
"I guess." Aang said.
"Don't be modest! They're huge!" Sokka exclaimed. As Aang covered his ears in embarrassment, Adara nudged Sokka in the shoulder and said, "Knock it off."
"Well, Aang, it was very nice to meet you. Very nice." Meng said. She turned and as she was walking away Aang said, "Likewise."
"I can't believe we're here in the house of nonsense." Sokka grumbled. Adara's thoughts exactly.
"Try to keep an open mind, Sokka. There are things in this world that just can't be explained. Wouldn't it be nice to have some insight into your future?" Katara questioned.
"It would be nice to have some bean curd puffs." Sokka stated. Adara chuckled. She grabbed her bag, took out her book, and began to read hoping to done and out of here as soon as possible. That was until the bean curd puffs showed up. She snapped back to reality and was ready to try some of the curd puffs, but Sokka snatched them before she could get to them. She would've fought him right then and there, but an elderly woman, clad in a yellow robe, entered the room.
"Welcome, young travelers. Now, who's next? Don't be shy." The lady, who must be Aunt Wu, said. Adara looked away and heard Katara pipe up, "I guess that's me." When she left, she turned her attention back to the curd puffs and watched with envy as Sokka munched on them saying, "Mm. Not bad, not bad." He held out the bowl to to Aang, but he declined saying,
"I'm good on puffs. So, what do you think they're talking about back there?"
"Boring stuff I'm sure. Love, who she's going to marry, how many babies she's going to have." Sokka said.
"Yeah, dumb stuff like that ... Well, I've got to find a bathroom." Aang said nervously. Aang walked away and Adara watched as Momo snatched the bowl away from Sokka and bring it near her. She rubbed Momo's head and said, "Thank-you, Momo." She gave him a couple bean curd puffs and grabbed more for herself.
"Aren't you going to share?" Sokka complained.
"Were you going to share with me?" Adara questioned. The questioned seemed to stump Sokka. Adara smirked and continued eating. Aang came back from the restroom looking fairly pleased.
"Looks like someone had a pretty good bathroom break." Sokka pointed out.
"Yeah ... when I was in there ..." Aang began, but Adara held up her hand and said, "I don't even want to know." Then, Aunt Wu and Katara came back and asked who would be next.
"Okay, let's get this over with." Sokka grumbled about to stand up, but Aunt Wu said, "Your future is full of struggle and anguish, most of it. Self-inflicted." Adara snorted at this. Okay. Maybe Aunt Wu wasn't so bad after all.
"But you didn't read my palms or anything!" Sokka exclaimed.
"I don't need to. It's written all over your face. You there, come with me." Aunt Wu said pointing to Aang. Aang stood up and followed her. Adara sat back and relaxed for a bit while Katara and Sokka whispered. She wasn't sure what they were talking about and she couldn't help but realize that this was the first time that Sokka, Katara, and her were actually alone to talk to one another. Adara felt awkward to say the least and she could see that the two siblings were awkward as well. She tried to run through every possible conversation topic, but it was hard to find one suitable. So, they sat in awkward silence until Aang returned.
Aunt Wu turned towards her and said, "Are you ready, dear?"
Adara thought about it for a moment. Maybe she should give this woman a chance. She stood up and followed her into the room and watched as Aunt Wu sat down. Aunt Wu faced her and said, "Please sit and hold out your hand." Adara sat down and couldn't help, but still feel awkward. She shouldn't be reliant on what this woman says.
"Young one, I sense that you've had to make difficult choices in the past that have led you to where you are today and I can see that you will have to make more difficult choices in the future that will help you grow into the woman you will become." Aunt Wu said. Adara frowned at that. More difficult choices. What could've been more difficult than leaving the Fire Nation? Then, she asked something that surprised herself.
"Do you see... Do you see anything in my love line?" Adara asked sheepishly. She was embarrassed to ask, but she couldn't help, but feel curious if she will ever meet someone special. During her time with the Yuyan Archers, Adara never really thought about it because she needed to focus on her training.
"Aw, yes. I do see someone in your love line. Your lover will be a great warrior and leader." Aunt Wu said. Adara's eyes narrowed. How generic is that? There are a ton of great warriors and leaders in the world. She stood up and said, "I knew that coming here was a waste of time." She stormed out of the room as Aunt Wu yelled, "Wait! But, he is not a be-" She didn't here the last part of what Aunt Wu said because she slammed the door. She felt like a fool for even giving the woman a chance.
As she reached Katara, Aang, and Sokka, she crossed her arms and had a sour look on her face, as she asked, "Can we please go now?"
"What's wrong, Adara?" Katara questioned. Seriously, now she's concerned? Adara huffed and walked out of the room ignoring their questions. She needed to be alone right now. She sat on a boulder on the edge of the town and played with one of her arrows trying to calm down. For a while, she was tempted to use her fire-bending, but decided against it because she wasn't very good at it and she could hurt someone if she got out of control. She heard a bunch of people talking and turned to see that a crowd had gathered in the center of the town. She was mildly curious to see what was going on, so she stood up and walked to the center of the town. She saw Aunt Wu and heard Aunt Wu announce, "The village will not be destroyed by the volcano this year!"
"Adara, there you are! We were worried about you." Adara heard someone call out. She turned and saw that it was Aang running up to her. She said, "Hi, Aang."
"Are you sure you're okay?" Aang questioned.
"I'll be fine. I just needed to cool off. I just really don't trust fortune tellers and I felt like a fool for even going to see what Aunt Wu had to say.." Adara admitted.
"Why is that?" Aang questioned.
"Well, she said very generic stuff and I felt like I was wasting my time, plus I still think that it's complete nonsense because there was this one time, my dad told me that he and my mom went to one while they were pregnant with me and the fortune teller said that I would be a boy and that my parents will live long and happy lives. As you can see, neither of those things came true. It's not good to be reliant on fortune tellers." Adara admitted.
"I'm sorry to hear that, but, like I said earlier, not everyone has the gift, but, according to the villagers, Aunt Wu hasn't been wrong so far." Aang said putting his hand on Adara's shoulder to try and comfort her. Adara remained silent at that statement. Maybe she was being too harsh with Aunt Wu, but she still wasn't going to be reliant on what she says. In the distance, she saw Sokka marching up to them with an angry expression on his face and yelled, "I can't believe all these saps! Someone really needs to scream some sense into them."
"They seem happy, Sokka." Aang pointed out.
"Not for long. I'm going to prove Aunt Wu's predictions are nonsense. Hey you, I bet Aunt Wu told you to wear those red shoes, didn't she?" Sokka demanded while pointing at the shoes. Adara smirked and thought that this should be entertaining.
"Yeah. She said I'd be wearing red shoes when I met my true love." The man said.
"Uh huh ... And how many times have you worn those shoes since you got that fortune?" Sokka wondered.
"Everyday." The man admitted.
"Then of course it's gonna come true!" Sokka shouted.
Really? You think so? I'm so excited!" The man exclaimed and walked away. Adara chuckled. She watched as Sokka hit a nearby stone, then a turkey duck flew down and started attacking Sokka. This made Adara burst out laughing and she said, "That was great. You truly have inspirational persuasion skills, Sokka. I can't wait to see how you handle yourself next time." Sokka growled at her while he was crouched down trying to swat away the bird.
Adara departed from them and browsed through the shops. This town was interesting, and, in the distance, she could see that Sokka was still trying to attempt to prove Aunt Wu wrong and she saw Katara with a papaya in her hand. Katara noticed her and asked, "Hi, Adara. Do you want some papaya?"
"Thanks, but no thanks. I'm not a fan of papaya." Adara explained.
"Me neither, but Aunt Wu said I should." Katara said. Adara raised her eyebrows at that statement, but didn't say anything. It was silent for moment until Katara spoke up, "Look, I know that we haven't exactly gotten a chance to truly get to know each other over the past couple days, so lets start now. As you can see, Sokka and I from the Southern Water Tribe and, as you know, I am a waterbender. I'm actually the last one in the South Pole."
"Really?" Adara questioned surprised. Katara nodded and told her the story of how her and Sokka met Aang in the Iceberg and found out he was the Avatar and how they are taking him to the North Pole so that Katara and Aang could learn water bending from real masters. Katara told her stories of how they meet the Kyoshi warriors, about Bumi, about Haru, the Winter Solstice, the Waterbending scroll, Jet, the Great Divide, and about the storm they were in that caused them to get sick in the first place. Everything that happened to the Trio up until they met Adara, Katara told her everything.
When she was done talking, Adara said, "That is absolutely incredible. You guys have been through so much together. No wonder it was so awkward to have me suddenly join the group besides the fact that I'm..." Adara held her arm and looked down.
Katara put her arm on Adara's shoulder and said, "Look, what matters is you're helping us now. I see that now." It was silent for a few moments before Katara said, "Hey, you know what would be fun?"
"What?" Adara wondered.
"We should go see Aunt Wu and see if she can give us another reading! I think it would be fun if the both of us went." Katara said. Adara groaned, but Katara begged, "Please..."
"Fine." Adara said. Katara hugged her and dragged her over to Aunt Wu's place. Adara almost felt bad for the old woman. When they got their, the man guarding the place said that Katara wasn't allowed inside. Adara snorted as Katara argued with the woman. In the distance, she saw Aang and Sokka come up and Aang said, "Hi Katara. Hi, Adara."
"Can you believe she won't let me in? And after all the business I've given her?" Katara exclaimed in anger.
"But, she doesn't even charge." Aang pointed out.
"I know, but still..." Katara sighed.
"Well, we have other things to worry about. Aunt Wu was wrong about the volcano." Sokka said.
"Really? We have to warn the-" But, Adara was cut off by Katara saying, "Sokka, you tried to convince me she was wrong before. It's going to take an awful lot to change my mind -" But, she was also cut off when volcano rumble violently. They looked at the volcano and saw that smoke was ascending from the peak of the volcano.
"Oh no." Adara said. They ran towards the villagers and Sokka shouted, "Everyone, that volcano is gonna blow any second! Aunt Wu was wrong!"
"Yeah, yeah, we know you don't believe in Aunt Wu, Mr. science and reason lover." A woman said.
"If you won't listen to him, maybe you'll listen to me. I want to believe Aunt Wu and her predictions as much as you do, but my brother and Aang saw the lava with their own eyes." Katara tried to reason.
Well, I heard Aunt Wu's prediction with my own ears." A man said.
Please listen to us! You are all in danger! And we have to get out of here! You can't rely on Aunt Wu's prediction, you have to take fate into your own hands!" Aang said. Another explosion happened and Adara was getting worried. What if they couldn't reason with them. She stepped forward and said, "Look! Can your fortune telling explain that?"
"Can your science explain why it rains?" The man retorted. Adara din't need to answer because Sokka yelled, "Yes! Yes, it can!"
"They just won't listen to reason." Katara said dismayed.
"But they will listen to Aunt Wu!" Aang pointed out.
"I know that's the problem." Sokka said.
Well, it's about to become the solution. We're taking fate in our own hands. First, I need to borrow Aunt Wu's cloud reading book." Aang said. He explained the plan and they headed towards Aunt Wu's building. Adara, Sokka, and Katara stood guard and did their best to act casually while Aang sneaked in to grab Aunt Wu's book. When he got back, Katara and him quickly got to work to create the symbol for volcanic doom and Sokka and Adara grabbed Aunt Wu.
"Aunt Wu, look! Something is happening in the clouds." Sokka said.
"That's very strange. It shouldn't ... Oh my!" Aunt Wu shouted. Adara looked up to see a skull shaped cloud. Aang and Katara got back.
"We still can save the village if we act fast. Sokka has a plan." Aang announced.
"Lava is gonna flow downhill to this spot. If we can dig a deep enough trench we can channel all the lava away from the village to the river." Sokka explained. Aang told all the earthbenders to follow him and they did. Sokka continued, "Everybody else grab a shovel! Come on! We've gotta hurry!" Everyone did as they were told. Adara was doing her best to shovel as fast as she could. They were doing their best to transport other boulders out of the way with the help of Appa. Another explosion happened.
"Dig faster! Dig faster!" Sokka exclaimed. Adara saw in the distance as lava creeping slowly towards them.
"Everyone needs to evacuate! We'll come for you when it's safe!" Aang shouted. Adara climbed out of the trench and joined Sokka, Aang, and Katara to see if the trench would work. The lava burned several headstones and when it reached the trench, it looked like it was going to overflow.
"It's too much! It's gonna overflow!" Katara shouted. Another explosion happened, Sokka, Adara, and Katara were about to run to safety, but Aang propelled himself forward and began to air bend. As the lava overflowed, Aang blew the lava straight up not allowing to reach the village. Then, with a mighty breath he blew the lava and it cooled to stone. Adara stood their completely shocked. This was the first time she saw Aang do something so powerful with his bending.
"Man, sometimes I forget what a powerful bender that kid is."
"Wait, what did you just say?" Katara questioned. She looked shocked for some reason.
"Nothing, just that Aang is one powerful bender." Sokka said.
"I suppose he is." Katara slowly said.
When the smoke cleared and the knew the village was safe, they gather in the middle of the village where they were saying goodbye. Adara was already on Appa and she could wait to get out of this village.
"By the way, we kind of borrowed your book." Aang admitted handing Aunt Wu her book.
"So, you messed with the clouds, did you?" Aunt Wu questioned. Then, she said, "Very clever."
"No offense, but I hope this taught everyone a lesson about not relying too much on fortune telling." Sokka said.
"But Aunt Wu predicted the village wouldn't be destroyed and it wasn't. She was right, after all." The calm man from earlier pointed out. Adara narrowed her eyes and Sokka got near the man and growled, "I hate you."
"It's okay, Sokka. Everything's going to be all right." Katara said leading him away. They got up on Appa and Aang joined soon after. Katara shouted, "Goodbye everyone! It was so nice to meet you! Take care, Meng."
"Take care!" Meng shouted. They left the village and Adara sighed with relief. She's had enough craziness for one day and she was glad to have some peace and quiet at last.
