The Spinning Gates

Gedun and Inasa stare wide eyed at the spinning gates that Izuku had just passed through on only his second attempt. To be fair, it was technically his first attempt as the first time he tried to enter it he stopped himself right before entering the spinning maze. Izuku on the other hand is quite excited to have completed the first lesson from the airbending masters, eagerly walking up to the two before asking, "What's next?" though it didn't do much to get the two airbenders out of their bewilderment. It takes a few moments for them to process the information but once it does so Gedun turns to face Izuku who is excitedly waiting for them to continue their training.

"We had requested that these be made fireproof for when you got frustrated with them. Avatar Korra and Genji both incinerated their own spinning gates when they attempted to learn airbending but you... didn't have a problem with it." Gedun says as the spinning gates come to a slow stop. "Forgive my skepticism but, would you mind going through them again? We need to make sure that it wasn't a fluke."

"Dude, that took me almost ten tries to get through them for the first time. You got through the gates, on your first official attempt." Inasa echos, his jaw still partially on the floor after having witnessed Izuku pass the first lesson.

"Yeah, do you want me to get them to spin or are you going to do it?" Izuku asks as he walks up to the gates.

"Allow me, Avatar Izuku. If you get through them again, then we will progress with some simple airbending techniques." Gedun responds, he draws his hands inwards towards himself, pulling the air around him to follow the motion of his hands.

He lifts both hands upwards and around in a circular motion before pressing both hands forwards directing the air currents towards the spinning gates. With movement of his bending, the air around them follows suit, picking up speed and carrying with it a significant force that causes the airbending master's cape to flutter behind him and the gates to begin spinning once more. Gedun motions for Izuku to begin the exercise once more, prompting the young avatar to draw in a deep breath. He lifts his hands upwards with his palms open much like how Inasa had shown him on his first attempt and takes a step forwards entering the spinning labyrinth. Calmly he steps forwards, moving his body to evade the gates as he passes them, slipping around the spin of one gate only to follow the movement of another. Remaining on the platforms of his feet the entire time he moves with the air currents displaced by the gate, rotating with it as it moves towards him before feeling another gate behind him. He slips past gate after gate, shifting his feet and his body nimbly through them. He breathes a sigh of relief once he passes through the last gates, once again leaving the two airbending masters bewildered at how fast he learned.

After definitively proving that it wasn't a fluke, Izuku is able to move on to the next lesson that the airbenders have in store for him. Getting the air to follow his motions, and the easiest way to do so is through running. Running displaces the air that the runner is traveling through and airbenders can use these air currents to increase their speed to upwards of 200mph. The only problem with this lesson is that Izuku hates running, frankly he's a bit more interested in being able to move the air with his hands rather than run around for the next hour or so before having to go to his last class for the day. Nevertheless, he concedes after slight protesting, following Inasa over to the perimeter of the gym Gedun motions for the two to get ready to run. Gedun raises his hand and chops downwards signaling for them to begin running and immediately Inasa takes off with his bending assisted sprint, rounding the first corner of the gym by the time Izuku has taken a mere three steps.

Izuku shakes his head, annoyed that Inasa is already showing off but increases his speed to a decent run focusing on his breathing like the two had instructed. As he gets to the first corner of the gym his focus is interrupted by Inasa speaking to him as he gets to the corner. "On your left." Inasa says with a grin on his face, causing Izuku to grumble to himself knowing that this is going to be a common theme with this exercise. He can't even use his firebending to assist with his speed, though he'd likely set the building on fire in the process if he was to do so. He tries to clear his mind and focus on the air around him, he can feel the air against his face as he runs and feels it being pulled closer to him as he takes deep breaths. Gedun notices that Izuku's speed picks up slightly as the avatar makes it to the second turn and towards the longer part of the wall. Unfortunately for him, Inasa once again has already rounded all four walls of the gym and is sprinting past him.

"On your left. C'mon slow poke!" Inasa chides before picking up speed and darting off, clearing the straight away in a few seconds. Izuku growls in frustration again, picking up speed, breathing faster and continuing to try to focus. The descendant of Aang notices a slight rise in heat in the room as Inasa continues to egg Izuku on passing him a third time repeating himself. Gedun chuckles hearing Inasa repeat himself, "On your left." though he winces slightly as a puff of fire escapes Izuku's mouth as he starts shouting as he chases after Inasa. Though surprisingly the... 'encouragement' from Inasa has helped Izuku assist his running with airbending as his speed has picked up significantly. He's almost caught up with Inasa as they round the corner on the far side of the gym, despite Izuku having been lapped by Inasa three times now. Seeing Izuku hot on his tail, Inasa picks up speed easily out running Izuku as he passes the shorter end of the gym. Try as he might, Izuku isn't able to catch up to inasa this time with the airbender laughing as he comes up behind him. "You're getting quicker but not quick enough. I'm on your left again." This time Izuku's frustration gets the better of him.

"Knock it off Airhead! I'm going to kick your ass!" The green haired firebender shares some of the hot headedness that Katsuki has. Thrusting his hands behind him and flaying his fingers apart, two jets of fire erupt from his palms and from the soles of his feet as he takes off scorching his way across the ground. The wall of orange flames expelled from Deku's hands jets him across the floor easily catching up with Inasa's speed as the training exercise devolves into chaos. Gedun sighs, he knew firebenders had a tendency to get frustrated easily, and while he had made sure that the spinning gates were fireproof, he neglected to make sure the rest of his training equipment was as well.

Saturday.

"Momo are you awake? Father wishes to talk to you before your date today." A feminine voice calls out from the other side of Momo's door. The noirette woman stretches in her bed, breathing in deeply as she adds fuel to her inner flame.

"I am now, Saya-nee" She responds to her sister's question in a half mumble as she flexes slightly, getting the blood flowing. She sits up and pulls the covers off of herself allowing the maroon silk robes to drape over her form. With all the speed of a snail-sloth Momo rolls out of bed, putting on a pair of slippers before tying her nightgown closed so it looks a bit more proper. She quickly does up her hair in it's typical spiky ponytail before putting in the royal hair pin then heading to the restroom.

"Good morning lady Momo." A dark haired woman dressed in a maid's uniform greets as Momo leaves her room. "Lord Tadayori is in the dining hall awaiting your arrival. Your siblings are also present."

"Thank you Kiyone, and good morning to you too." Momo greets as she accepts the cup of tea that the maid had brought to her. Whatever her father wanted, that required being told by her older sister and now one of the maids was probably very important.

Reluctantly Momo walks through the west wing of the palace, glazing briefly at the tapestries of her ancestors before her. It's likely that her cousin Firelord Kenshi would already be down to business with foreign dignitaries as well as hero representatives from the world hero organization and the white lotus. That organization returned to secrecy after failing to protect avatar Korra, but she suspects that her father could be a member of the once again secret society considering his choice of decor. She walks past a framed pai sho table on the wall that guards Firelord Iroh the first's old room, it is the original table that he played on when in the palace itself all those years ago. As she rounds the corner into the grand dining hall she sees her father and mother sitting at the center of the large table and oddly enough the firelord himself seated at the head. Beside him is his wife Kimiyo sits calmly reading through the morning paper, showing her husband any interesting articles that come up. Her four siblings are all seated in front of their parents on the kneeling pillows on the floor, herself being left a spot in the middle between her younger twin siblings and her elder brother and sister. Upon seeing his middle daughter enter the room, Tadayori sets down his cup of coffee before motioning for her to have a seat.

"Morning Momo." He greets, his warm voice filled with an iota of pride this morning. The salt and pepper haired goatee sporting man removes the glasses from his face and locks eyes with the ones he shares with his daughter. "I wish to discuss something with you this morning."

"Saya-neechan mentioned you did when she woke me up, same with Kiyone as I made my way down stairs." Momo responds, setting her empty cup of tea on a porcelain coaster before neatly folding her hands in her lap.

"I have been told that you are going to begin courting the avatar today." The firelord says from the head of the table, the silver haired elderly man speaks with a tone of joy in his voice. "I am very proud of your choice of partner."

"Thank you, Firelord Kenshi." She says with a curt nod as one of the servants brings her her breakfast platter. "What did you wish to discuss, father?"

"I wanted to know what your plans are and to ask if you require an escort for your date today." Tadayori's response prompting Momo's mother to chime in.

"Ara ara, You sound like you already approve of him." The black haired mother, Akeno Yaoyorozu responds prompting Kenshi to chuckle slightly to himself on the far side of the table. "Though, I believe the literal incarnate of balance and peace is a good match for our daughter, if not the best possible option."

"Momo-Neechan has a date? Ohh! What's he like?!" Momo's younger sister Minei asks as the black haired 10 year old girl bounces excitedly in her seat tugging on her sister's arm.

"He's the Avatar, Minei. The kindest and most powerful man in the world." Saya answers for her sister, the 19 year old woman hides a mischievous smile behind a napkin, but Momo could definitely tell that her sister was scheming something already.

"If he can best me in a duel then he's alright in my book." Her eldest brother Mako responds before taking a bite from the rice that they had been provided. "What's the kid's name anyways?"

"Izuku Midoriya." Momo answers.

"He's Hisashi's brat?" Kenshi pipes up from the other end of the table, "If that boy is anything like his father and grandfather he's gonna be as stubborn as they come. Hikoshiki and I went to highschool together, the amount of trouble we got into, you'd wonder why we weren't ever thrown into the boiling rock!" The elder man laughs. "Bring the young man around here after your date. I wish to speak with him."

"Now now Kenshi." Kimiyo adds in her grandmotherly tone. "I'm sure the boy is already quite nervous about his date with Momo today. There's no point in getting him to be more worried about today. What do you have planned today?"

"We're going out to lunch and then to the movies." Momo answers, her youngest brother Kenji perks up hearing this being quite the fan of movies himself.

"What are you going to see?" Kenji asks.

"I'm not sure yet, I suggested just going there and seeing what looks interesting. As for where we're going to lunch, our mutual friend Bakugou Katsuki had mentioned to avoid going to Iroh's tea shop as its quality has greatly declined. So he suggested Ember's Steakhouse for lunch, it's a restaurant near our school. I'll have to pick him up at the front of the school unfortunately, since Principle Shyu doesn't allow male and female students within a hundred yards of the respective dorms." Momo explains.

"I won't keep you for much longer, that's all I wished to know. However I do need to remind you to not take part in any carnal activities until you're engaged at the very least." This statement from Tadayori causes Momo to accidentally break her refilled tea cup, her older sister to blush with a wide grin on her face and her oldest brother to almost choke on his food. Meanwhile the statement flies completely over the heads of the twins.

"F-f-father! Please!" Momo protests, causing her cousin and his wife to laugh as well as her parents.

Izuku similarly is awoken by Katsuki pounding on his dormitory door; he, Izuku himself and Shouto all share a dorm with their own bedrooms off the sides of the main living area. Though Katsuki hitting the door repeatedly wasn't needed, Izuku had been awake since dawn going through his meditation that Gedun had instructed as homework and one of the early airbending forms for new students to the bending discipline. The movements are pretty similar to Tai Chi, the exercise itself had him light some incense then move through a slow sequence or kata of techniques with the goal of getting the smoke from the incense to move. On his balcony, Izuku stands on the middle of the little out cropping, slowly he pulls his hands towards his chest then extends them outwards before pulling them around in a small circle back to where they were over his chest. Impatient Katsuki opens the door to Izuku's room and barges in only to see the incense that Izuku had lit being pulled towards the fledgeling airbender's technique. The smoke forms a ring around him as he continues through the motions of the technique breathing deeply in the smells of the lavender incense.

"Holy shit." Katsuki says prompting Izuku to stop his practice, slightly startled at hearing his friend's voice. "You've been the avatar for three days and you're already airbending." Katsuki was amazed to say the very least, sure the history books said avatars pick up new bending styles fairly easily (Unless it was an element opposite to theirs or their personality in Avatar Korra's case.) but to see it in person is a whole different experience.

"Master Gedun said that Avatar Aang picked up waterbending on his first attempt." Izuku responds as he uses a brief movement of his hands to snuff out the burning embers on the incense sticks. "I managed to get through the spinning gates lesson on my first try and I picked up the airbending assisted sprinting."

"But you hate running." Katsuki responds.

"I never said I liked it." Izuku responds, "Just that I picked it up pretty quickly... and kinda set the gym on fire when I got frustrated with Inasa continuing to pass me saying 'On YoUr lEfT.' every time he did."

"Ha! So that's why the basics class got canceled. Thanks for that Deku, it was boring as shit." Katsuki grins but Izuku just groans, despite the school being insured he's probably bound to get lectured by his father for doing that as it'd probably come out of his paycheck.

"So, why did you barge in my room? Again?" Izuku asks, being a bit displeased by Katsuki's antics this morning.

"To make sure you don't sleep through your date, dumbass, now go get dressed you have a couple hours before she gets here." With that, Katsuki leaves the way he came, leaving Izuku to his thoughts.
