On Thin Ice

There's a sense of dread among the first year students, with the disappearance of Chan under mysterious circumstances the entire class is on alert. While Izuku has offered help trying to use his position as the avatar to benefit the search, the Anchorage police have the investigation under control. Kihon had brought some of Chan's clothing and other belongings from his room so that the police could use their polar bear dogs to track him into the wilderness. When asked about the reason why she has access to his room, Kihon merely blushed and admitted that they are in a relationship. With the authorities handling it for the most part, the staff elect to try to keep the students' minds off the disappearance of their friend while the heroes and police continue their search. However the Four Nations Bending Games tournament has been canceled until Chan is found leaving most of the students to mill around the hotel for most of the day. After being awake for most of the night, Izuku returned to his room and immediately passed out on his bed leaving the others to speculate about what happened.

"When was the last time you all saw him anyways?" Momo asks as she, Kaminari, Katsuki, Setsuna and Kihon walk from their rooms towards the cafeteria. "I haven't seen him since we got off the boat, and even then he was still with you Kihon."

"I snuck back to his room just after one in the morning and he was going to sleep when I left." Kihon amidst, much to the suggestive smirk she's receiving from both Setsuna and Kaminari.

"I hope you at least used protection." Todoroki says which earns him an evil look from both Kihon and Momo.

"I don't fraternize with that extra, He chatted with Deku yesterday before Deku's firebending lesson." Katsuki responds, though calling their missing classmate an extra annoys both Momo and Kihon.

"Think he was just sleepwalking?" Kaminari asks

"He sleep walks around the dorms sometimes, He is my roommate and I've had to tie him down twice in the past month." Shouto responds. "The last time he got loose, he took a shower fully clothed and ate a reverse ham sandwich."

"He managed to get outside, past all the security measures and cameras, all while sleep walking? I doubt it, somethin's fishy about this and I wanna know what the fuck it is." Katsuki says as the group exits the elevator. "Also, the fuck is a reverse ham sandwich?"

"Ham on the outside bread in the center." Todoroki responds as the group continues walking down the hallway.

"Do you think it was the wendigo that took one of the firebenders?" One of the male waterbending students asks as the group rounds the corner. As they do, the other boy he was talking with abruptly shuts his mouth and shushes him.

"SHHHhhhhhh!!! Are you insane?! Do not say that word or you could attract one to hunt us down you idiot!" The other boy says, prompting the group to stop and stare at the bizarre display that the two waterbenders are putting off.

"Got somethin' to say ice for brains?" Bakugou asks, folding his arms and lifting an eyebrow at the two. "One of our classmates goes missin' and you two just so happen to be talking about something you don't want us to hear?" Katuski asks before creating a few small sparks from the agni eye on his forehead. "Talk, or I'll blast you to bits."

"We don't know anything!" One of the boys shouts as he throws his arms above his head, surrendering to Katsuki. "I'm Nevrak and he's Doli." The older of the two, Nevrak says before pointing to his friend, "We were talking about old legend, a monster that causes people to disappear."

"Well one of our friends has disappeared, would you care to tell us what creature can cause this?" Momo asks, creating a small towel to drape over Katsuki's head to prevent him from combustion bending at the two.

"Alright, but if anyone else goes missing don't blame us ok? If you say the creature's name it will hunt you down and eat you." Nevrak responds, the taller man sports a warrior's wolf tail hair style and loose fitting bender's clothes responds. "It's called the Wendigo."

"The hells a Wendigo?" Setsuna asks.

"It's someone or something who went insane after using the forbidden waterbending form. That power drives them mad and they kidnap people in the night to eat them." Doli answers. "They turn monstrous, feral, have icy daggers for teeth and they become cannibals."

"Forbidden? What's forbidden about waterbending? I've read stories of waterbenders freezing people's hearts and organs to kill them." Todoroki asks, recalling an old police case his father was a part of when he first started hero work.

"Bloodbending." Nevrak responds, "It's been forbidden since forever, and the northern watertribe is chalk full of them through history. Remember Amon from the history books of Avatar Korra's time? He and his brother were both bloodbenders and they could do it at will, without a full moon!"

"You think this Wendigo took Chan?" Momo asks, prompting both of them to shush her now before looking frantically. As they do, another member of their class passes by them. The tall narrow eyed brown haired man from before that Izuku had told Momo about.

"Are you telling ghost stories again Doli?" The man asks as he stops before the group of water and firebenders. "Don't let these two ice-brained morons get to you. The wendigo isn't real, just an old wives tale." He dismisses before turning to Momo and bowing before her. "I am Taruna lady Yaoyorozu, it is a pleasure to meet you." He says before grabbing and kissing the top of Momo's hand.

"Woah woah woah, she's taken, buster. She's the avatar's girl." Setsuna says as she forces herself between Momo and Taruna before sticking her arms out in a t-pose position in front of her.

"My apologies, I meant no disrespect. It's merely how a respectable man greets a woman of great power. I wouldn't expect a firenation peasant to know these traditions. Send Avatar Izuku my regards." He says as brushes past her, purposely bumping Katsuki in the process as he continues walking down the hall.

"Asshole." Katsuki says as Taruna turns the corner. "You two coming to get food too? Might as well fraternize with the locals since we can't do jack shit around here with that kidnapper on the loose."

"We were just heading to the training yard but sure, I could eat." Doly responds.

"Who is he to think I'm a peasant?! That puffed up narcissistic... Grrrrr I'm gonna incinerate him." Setsuna shouts before Kihon extends an arm out and stops her.

"He's not worth it, there's already enough happening as is. Let's just go get something to eat." Kihon says in a depressed tone before she walks ahead of the group towards the cafe.

"Why did you let him do that?" Kaminari asks as the group picks up their pace slightly to catch up with Kihon. "That's not actually a thing rich people do right? My folks own Benders' Electric and even they never do that."

"I... I didn't move my hand." Momo says, prompting the other five to stop dead in their tracks. "It felt like it got pulled forwards... against my will." She says as she stares at her own hand for a moment.

"You don't think..." Setsuna trails off, leaving the question hanging in the air.

"It might have just been force of habit, I had to do that repeatedly when my father kept having sutors over to the royal estate asking for my hand in marriage. We're probably just all spooked, let's go get something to eat shall we?" Momo responds before leading the group down the hall to go get their lunch.

"There's no way that was muscle memory. I saw that bastard's hand move and hers moved with it." Katsuki thinks to himself, shooting another glare in the direction that Taruna had walked off in.

Izuku ended up sleeping through the afternoon and night into the following morning. He would have remained asleep for even longer however a series of hard knocks on his door raised him from his sleep. Groggily he rolls out of the queen sized bed and stumbles over to the door half prepared to incinerate the person on the other side. However, by the time he reaches the small hallway between the door and his room, a key card is slid into the lock and his father barges into the room. "Thank fuck, ok quickly did you see anything that happened yesterday?" Hisashi says as he rushes over to his son and embraces him. "Two more people in your class went missing last night. Lee Kamato, a friend of yours and Momos. She and Kihon both vanished and the last thing we have on the cameras is them boarding the elevator after dinner." This statement causes Izuku's eyes to snap wide open as his blood runs almost ice cold from the news.

"I went to sleep after I got back from training with Aunt Mitsuki, I've been here since." Izuku answers, causing his father to exhale a breath of relief.

"Ok, we saw you on the cams around one yesterday and you hadnt come out since so I was beginning to get worried." Hisashi says before having to take a deep breath in order to stop himself from rambling. "Endeavor and the Anchorage police force think they've got a trail so I'm gonna be joining them for this. I just needed to make sure you're ok."

"Do they need my help at all? I know I'm still in training but I could at least do something." Izuku asks.

"No, you need to stay here and protect your classmates in case this situation gets any worse. Mitsuki is gonna stay here with you guys, and I've called for Enji's apprentice Moe Kamiji." Hisashi finally takes another breath after getting that explanation out.

"What about my training then? I'm supposed to be with the Izumi's today." Izuku asks, watching his father check his phone after receiving a text from Endeavor.

"Mrs Izumi went into labor last night so you got assigned to Master Viku for today for a one on one. I gotta go, I'll see you when we find them." He stammers before hugging his son tightly and taking off.

Izuku slowly makes his way out of the room, now seeing that the hallway has a police officer and waterbender stationed at every door in the hall. The policemen are members of the metal corps from Republic city that have been hired out to the other nations to bolster their ranks and seeing them here gives him a little bit of relief. When they notice him walk out of his room, metal bender and waterbender alike snap to attention then bow to the new avatar as Izuku walks down the hall towards the middle aged master waterbender. Master Viku has the reddish skin of the northern water tribesmen with salt and pepper colored hair. He sports an imperial style curled end mustache and has a cigar sticking out of the side of his mouth. He's wearing the traditional master's attire that consists of a bushy blue parka with a lined hood, shoulders and three feathers on his chest. Upon seeing the green haired firebender the older man puffs on the cigar for a moment then blows out a smoke ring towards the ceiling.

"Morning, Avatar Izuku." He says before cutting off the burning end of the cigar so that he can save it for later. "I wish we could have met under better circumstances but we have to play with the cards that fate deals us." His voice is gruff from the years of teaching and yelling at students but it's disciplined like that of a former military man.

"Thank you for training me today Master Viku." Izuku responds, bowing to the waterbending master in front of him. "I don't suppose I could talk you into letting me get breakfast first. I haven't eaten anything since lunch yesterday." Izuku asks, causing the slightly chubby master to chuckle to himself.

"I was gonna head down there myself." He says before turning and leading Izuku towards the cafe. "I'm not gonna train you as rough as Joki does, It's been nearly 6 centuries since anyone in the watertribe has trained a firebender to bend water. We're going to start with the very basics and work slowly. I believe that there is a way to help you get past the block that happens with firebending avatars and water. I'm going to have you try to bend water while partially submerged in it so you feel how the water moves around your body."

"All Joki would do is throw me into the lake whenever I couldn't get the water to move." Izuku answers, causing Viku to chuckle to himself.

After a full continental breakfast the waterbending master and his new student head out towards the hot springs near the resort itself. Along the way Momo decides to join the two and observe Izuku's training. Though the fact that she has decided to also enjoy the hot spring in a maroon and black bikini is rather distracting. Viku has Izuku enter the water then begins detailing the beginning movements of waterbending. The forwards and backwards movements of waving the water. Leaning forwards and pushing the hands outwards then shifting backwards and pulling them back. Viku sits on a small wooden dock and monitors Izuku's training, giving him critiques as he goes through the movements. What neither of them notice is Taruna standing in one of the windows observing the avatar training in waterbending, scowling at Izuku the entire time...
