Silence is golden
Kailua - Lo'ak's twin sister. She's very quiet, quieter than her twin, thanks to her insecurities about her human look. She hates the way her family seem to pit against her brother - and only when she witnesses how Jake & Neytiri discipline Lo'ak after the Payakan incident does she finally speak up.

"You've brought shame to this family," Kailua winced. That was a bit harsh. She felt her ears pin back, despite not being the one being told off. Her first finger played with her pinky: a trait only shared with her sister, twin and father. Her mom, older brother and younger sister didn't have 5 fingers, they only had 4. It was something she was painfully reminded of in the forest: usually with nasty remarks from the other girls of the clan. As she was the eldest granddaughter of the Tsahik, she was in training alongside her adopted sister, Kiri. But Kiri wasn't allowed to be Tsahik, as she wasn't a direct descendent.
Something both parties found unfair. Kailua would much rather by sitting up in the trees, sketching on a bit of paper and ash stick rather than deal with sick and injured people all day. Plus, she wasn't all that great with blood. That fact was discovered after she was tasked with helping Ninat, a close friend of her mother's, give birth to her fifth child. She woke up to Ninat feeding her newest daughter with a look of amusement.
Due to her insecurities, she clung to her twin tightly, probably too tightly. She knew her dad was still singled out sometimes, but he'd learned to adapt in the sixteen years he'd been on Pandora. She'd been on Pandora for fourteen years and still didn't know what to do. She knew her brother felt the same: even if he didn't show it. He'd always joke to her quietly how the five fingers helped grasp the tree trunks better and how the ten toes helped them move quicker.
But, as she watched her father lay into her twin, she realised that he was punishing him for his own insecurities. She took a step forward to speak in his defence, but her eldest brother, Neteyam (the one who always defended them and fought against their parents as best he could for them) gave a single head shake: You'll get yelled at too. Just leave it. Talk to them later, when they're calm. He said. Kailua sighed softly and stepped back into the shadow again.

Later that night, long after Tuk and Kiri had turned into bed, she sat with her feet in the water, listening to her parents lay into her brother once more. She kicked them quickly, hoping the sound of the splashes would overpower her father's voice. "It's not nice to hear them do this," She turned with a scoff. "He didn't do anything wrong, 'Teyam. I heardAo'nung. He was happy that Lo had gotten lost." She kicked harshly. "They never wanna hear his point of view." Her oldest brother sighed in agreement. "I know. I do try to stop them," Kailua shook her head quickly. "It's not your job to do that. They're just shitty parents," She mumbled. A cuff to the back of her head was expected, but it didn't hurt any less. "Watch it. They do the best they can," He said. Kailua rolled her eyes. "Ronal listens to her kids. Ikeyni listens to her kids. Hell, even Grandmother listened to Mom. Why the hell don't they listen to Lo?"
Before Neteyam could say anymore, Lo'ak stormed out onto the decking. Kailua shot up into a standing position, Neteyam following suit. "Don't walk away from me, boy!" She took a step forward in front of her brother, staring her dad down defiantly. "Kailua, move. Or I'll move you," She continued glaring. "Stop shouting at him," She growled lowly. Her mom placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Your father will stop shouting if you move." A few more beats passed until he sighed. "Fine,"
Kailua stepped aside. "Dad, I know what you saw, but for the nineteenth time, Ao'nung left me there. He'd left by the time I turned back." Lo'ak tried. Her dad scoffed. "And I told you to make friends. That didn't mean letting them walk all over you," Kailua frowned. Lo'ak growled loudly. "And what was I supposed to do, huh? Tell him no? Fight with him again!?" Kailua winced with each word spoken, each louder than the last. "No, but not be such a disappointment as per usual!"
Kailua gasped, anger flooding her veins. "How DARE you speak to him like that?!" She yelled. "Kailua!" Her mom exclaimed. She spun. "He's done NOTHING wrong! WHY are you yelling at him!?" She yelled. "Stay out of it, this does not concern you," Her dad hissed. Kailua screamed in frustration. "NO! You do NOT! Get to disrespect MY BROTHER LIKE THAT!" She screamed. She took a step forward. "IF HE WON'T DEFEND HIMSELF, I WILL!" She yelled.
"THAT IS ENOUGH!" Jake shouted. Kailua faced him, panting and glaring. "You do not... ever speak to anyone like that, are we understood?" He hissed. Kailua scoffed. "But you can him? Or him" She snapped. Jake raised a hand. "You are a child, Kailua," He snapped. She glared with more ferocity than she ever had at her father. "I will not stand by and watch it happen," She hissed. "Keep going and you'll get slapped, do you read me?" Jake hissed back. Kailua froze. He'd never threatened to hit her before. Kailua bit her cheek, hurt burning through her body. She stalked over to the entrance of the mauri and flung the door open. "I hate you," She spat.

Later, after Neteyam had sat with her for a while apologising on their dad's behalf, and Lo'ak had come to keep her company, their dad turned up. She felt Lo'ak's tail whipping angrily behind. "Lo'ak, I need to speak with Kailua," Lo'ak didn't move. "I'm not going anywhere. She'll just tell me anyway. Cuts the middle man out." Jake huffed. "Boy-" He stopped himself. "Fine, fine."
He stepped closer. "I'm sorry, ok? I shouldn't have lost my temper like that." Kailua shut her eyes with an invisible shake of the head. She shrugged. "S'fine." Whether her dad left straight away or later, she'd never know. She never turned to face him. "Thanks for back there. I know 'Teyam and Kiri try to stop him, but they always fold," Kailua glanced at her fifteen minutes older brother. "It's what sisters do. Somebody needed to challenge him, and it wasn't gonna be Mom," Lo'ak's tail slapped her leg. She smiled slightly. "Accept the thank you, penis face."
She shoved him in the water, cackling until he yanked her in by her ankles.
