Roman Empire (end of Ancient Arc)
Domini who was sitting in his seat in front of them. He then began to speak
"Alright, since everyone is ready, today we are going to talk about the most influential empire to exist in all of the Terran kind. An Empire that lasted over a Millenia. The Roman Empire."
"Roman Empire?" Asami said
"Yup!" Servus said "The Roman Empire lasted over millennia, and it was huge. More huge than the Fire Nation Empire. It conquered the entire Mediterranean Sea. Here is a map of the Roman Empire."
The entire audience was shocked to see what the Roman Empire looked like. Especially Kuvira. She was impressed that they could conquer all those lands.
"It was the year 117 AD when they were at their greatest extent. It conquered the entire whole Mediterranean sea. It gained the World's wealth, fame, vast lands, then one day it disappeared."
"Disappeared?" Asami said
"So are you going to show us a video or something?" Korra asked
"Yes, I will but later."
Kuvira: I'm ready to hear it.
Domini began to speak
"It began in the eighth century BC. Ancient Rome grew from a small town in central Italy into a vast empire that controls the entire Mediterranean sea."
"If that's the case, they must have a very powerful military," Kuvira said
Servus: that's correct Kuvira. The Roman Army was one of the most successful in the history of the Terran Society. Each legionnaire carried a short sword called a gladius. This was the main weapon. They also carried a helmet, armor shield, and pack with supplies. They were highly trained to march long distances, fight in formations, and kill expertly with all the weapons they created. Here is a video of them fighting.
https://youtu.be/OvzTcoQ0YMU
https://youtu.be/8BnIigcHaEU
Pema and Tenzin covered their children's eyes seeing it was just too violent. Varrick and Zhu Li watched in silence. Korra smiled with all the action. Asami watched all the amazement. Hiroshi's jaw was opened wide. While everyone else watched in silence, Kuvira was more amazed at these Roman Fight. She was highly amazed at their fighting techniques, including their formations. She couldn't stop watching the screen. Her eyes were glued to them.
"Amazing! These Romans are so powerful! They gave all of their strength to those barbarians. Even in that fireball scene, they were able to stand still until those hit them. They might have more guts than anyone in my army. " Kuvira Finally Admitted
"Throughout history, Terran Historians believed that the Romans didn't have a national anthem, but they actually do. I'll explain why later, but for now on, I want you all to hear it."
Domini and Servus began to turn on the screen and turn on the audio. The video begins to play.
https://youtu.be/TeCIZLXwkI8
Everyone felt so happy after hearing their national anthem. The language they speak was beautiful compared to the language they were speaking. Though they had national anthems for themselves, this anthem was just beautiful.
"That sounds so beautiful," Korra said
"What language do the Romans speak?" Asami asked Domini as she turned her head towards him
"The Romans spoke Latin. In modern times it's considered a dead language, but in reality, it's not. It's still widely spoken on a small city-state in Italy." Domini said
"The letters they used, it doesn't look like our standard language." Zhu LI said
"They used a script called Latin Script. It's pretty obvious that they came from the Roman Empire. Even the name said Latin. I'll show you the letters."
Domini showed a screen on what they used. The picture showed the letters of the Alphabet.
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXY
Asami and Hiroshi carefully observed the Alphabet. It was short compared to their language, yet it looked difficult to learn due to the fact it was a dead language. The daughter and father quickly took notes and copied off the letters.
"not to mention, the Chinese also made contact with the Romans despite both being faraway" Domini added
"How did they make contact?" Asami asked
"There was a thing called the Silk road. An ancient trade route that linked the Romans with the Middle East and Asia. In fact only a few Chinese people made it to Rome and spoke to the Emperor." Domini said
"They call China, Serica meaning the Land of Silk" Servus said
"Interesting. I'm so glad the Chinese made contact with the Romans" Asami said
"Now are you all ready for the fun part of the show?" Domini asked
"yes, let' us observed the Roman Empire," Varrick said
"I'm ready for it" Rangi said as she sit back on her seat next to her lover.
The screen went dark and then it enhance to a video that is going to show Roman History.
https://youtu.be/x3FFDPdLVNw
"From law and politics to architecture and civil engineering, from literature and the arts to the very languages we speak, the Roman Empire's echoes continue to be heard."
"Laws, Politics, architectures and Civil Engineer? Ooh sounds like the Romans really put effort into science" Asami said looking excited like a little child who is getting ice cream.
The mythical origins of Rome's foundation begin in the Latin city of Alba Longa. There, the twin newborn sons of the war god, Mars, and a priestess have been sentenced to death by their great-uncle. Romulus and Remus were famously saved by a she-wolf and raised by a poor shepherd. As young men, they set out to establish their own city, but Remus was murdered by his brother in a dispute over its location. As king, Romulus declared Rome an "asylum city," which very quickly attracted unsavory characters from across the Italian peninsula.
"oof looks like Rome started off as a violent process," Korra said
"That's not a good way to find a nation. I mean, compared to Republic City" Tenzin said
Wives were needed for this mostly male population, so young women were abducted from neighboring cities and tribes, in an act immortalized as the "rape of the Sabine women."
"Wait....what!" Pema said shockingly
"Abducting Women out of their will? and Raping them?!" Mako said in an irritated tone
"That is fucked up," Bolin said "I mean instead you should've asked nicely instead of abducting them"
"I don't like where this is going," Aang said as his wife Katara nodded
Despite this, within a matter of years, Romulus and the king of the Sabines arranged to co-rule. Roman Kings.
"Well at least they shared," Kyoshi said
What happened next would be repeated throughout Rome's history: the mysterious or violent death of the ruler. First, it was the Sabine king, Titus Tatius, who died during a riot. Then, Romulus disappeared during a storm. In the myth, he became the god Quirinus and left this earthly realm. He was likely killed by political rivals.
"oohh very omnious" Sokka said
"During the reign of the second king, Numa Pompilius, key Roman elements appeared, including the twelve-month calendar, the Vestal Virgins, and the position of Pontifex or priest."
"Ah so they invented a calendar system. Very nice...very nice" Asami said
"Even to this day, the Terrans used the same Roman Calendar" Domini added
"Really? A calendar that would last thousands of years" Hiroshi said
"Numa was followed by five other kings, the last of whom, nicknamed Tarquin the Proud, not only murdered his predecessor but was overthrown by the people. Thus was the 'free republic of Rome' born in the sixth century BCE."
"HA! Serves him Right," Kya said
"That's what you get for murdering your predecessor" Lin said
The Roman RepublicOnly a handful of aristocratic families, known as the patricians, held political and religious power. The plebeians, who made up the majority of Rome's population, were excluded. However, between 494 and 287 BCE, protests brought about some change, including the formation of the Concilium Plebis, dedicated tribunes, and the Twelve Tables of written laws.
"Ah so they managed to clean things up quickly. Very smart" Suyin said
Progress was slow, but eventually, the wealthy plebeians, or equestrian class, came to have the same rights as the patricians. However, many changes were only surface-deep, and nothing changed for the poor.
"Like they say the power shall rule and the poor shall stay weak," Kuvira said
In the years that followed, the Republic was in an almost constant state of war as it brought all of Italy under its control. By 130 BCE, Rome was a Mediterranean superpower, having expanded into North Africa and Spain following the Punic Wars with Carthage. The consul, Marius reformed the military. By 102 BCE, soldiers were paid for their service and given farms upon retirement. Wealthy men used their money to create loyal private armies.
"Well they deserved it after serving the nation itself," Kuvira said "They fought so hard and all"
Corruption and greed in Rome led to civil wars starting in 88 BCE when Marius' rival, General Sulla, marched his army into Rome. Sulla eventually won and became a consul.Julius caesar 49 BCE, Rome braced for civil war again as General Julius Caesar, the hero of Gaul, crossed the Rubicon River into Italy with his army. He was about to face off against both the Senate and his former friend and political partner, Pompey.
"Too much civil wars is Rome that unstable or there is just so much corruption," Opal asked
Pompey mounted an unsuccessful military campaign. He was assassinated on the orders of Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII, who hoped to win favor from Caesar. Instead, a fateful meeting between Ptolemy's sister, Cleopatra, and Caesar led to a famous love affair and the Pharaoh'sdeath.
"Wow...He lost the love of his life and ends up dead. That sounds a terrible ending" Asami said
Back in Rome, Caesar's merciful treatment of his opponents had only increased his heroic status. The Senate declared him an absolute ruler for ten years, but Caesar overextended his powers.
"This is what I am talking about. When someone wants to take power, she claims she will rule for 4 years, and then she will say 10 years" Korra said
After he made himself Dictator for Life in 44 BCE, he effectively signed his own death warrant. On the Ides of March, he was stabbed to death by some 40 senators.
"Well at least he admits he might get killed," Lin said
The Liberators of the Republic faced the wrath of Romans. The civil war eventually erupted again,
this time involving Caesar's trusted friend, General Mark Anthony, Mark Anthony's lover, Cleopatra, and Caesar's nephew and heir, Octavian.
"Too many civil wars, Rome is cursed!" Korra shouted
" OH SPIRITS! Korra! Be quiet" Tenzin shouted in a whispered tone
Korra then sat down quietly and continues to listen
Octavian emerged victorious with the deaths of Anthony and Cleopatra. Egypt, with its vital grain harvest, came under Rome's control. It was the end of the Republic and the beginning of the Empire.
"This is where the famous Roman Empire began," Domini said
The Early Roman EmpireOctavian renamed Augustus, was declared "emperor, son of the god Caesar" in 27 BCE. As the sole ruler, Augustus maintained at least an illusion that the Republic remained. While the Senate was still important, its real purpose was to give legitimacy to the Emperor'sdecisions.
"Hm sounds like a fair share of power," Bumi said
Augustus' 41-year-long rule was a golden age. Peace reigned; there was prosperity and stability, and culture flourished. Augustus developed a road network and courier system.
"It's about time," Varrick said
He established both a standing army and the Praetorian Guard, as well as created dedicated police and fire-fighting services in Rome. He also embarked on a vast rebuilding project for the city.
"This is truly amazing," Hiroshi said "The Roman Empire is such an amazing thing to learn. So many inventions and so many new ideas they created. The Romans are truly ahead of their time"
"That is correct Hiroshi," Domini said "The Romans were so advanced for their time in combat because they had all the equipment, armor, and weapons that would be far superior to everyone else in the world. Of course back in their time"
The empire enlarged dramatically, stretching into central Europe, and the conquest of Spain was completed. Losing three legions in Germania in 9AD, however, brought an end to Rome'sexpansion into that province.
"That's also good, no need to expand more," Korra said "Don't want to take the risk of feeding too many people."
When Augustus died in 14 AD, his stepson, Tiberius, succeeded him. He was a competent but disinterested ruler. Instead, he delegated power to Sejanus, the ambitious commander of the Praetorian Guard. After Sejanus had Tiberius' heirs murdered, the Emperor went on a paranoia-fuelled killing spree, convinced he was surrounded by enemies. Ironically, he may have been killed by his successor, Caligula, in 37 AD.
"oh dear, that guy went mentally insane," Opal said
"Aww...poor dude" Korra said
Although Caligula was popular at first, soon, his true nature emerged. Over the space of a four-year rule, he declared himself a living god, executed many people killed, including family members, and embarked on incestuous liaisons with his sisters.
"The heck? Did you declare yourself a god? What miracles you can do to prove yourself? By Murdering too many people?" Korra ranted "ME myself am a religious figure, but there is no way I will murder anyone"
The Praetorian Guard murdered him and appointed his uncle Claudius in his place.
"There we go! That's what happens" Bolin said
Claudius never expected to be emperor. Various physical challenges meant he had lived asa scholar away from public view. Despite his lack of experience, Claudius was a good administrator and ordered building many roads, aqueducts, and canals across the empire.
"Finally a good emperor with morals," Tenzin said
During his 13-year reign, the successful conquest of Britain began. In 54 AD, he died, possibly at the hands of his fourth wife, making way for her son, Nero.
"Traitor" Lin whispered
Everyone knows the story that Nero "fiddled while Rome burned." He blamed the devastating great Fire of 64 AD on the Christians, who were a troublesome sect. The fire distracted the public from the empire's empty coffers due to his overspending.
"So the Emperor technically did nothing while these people are ransacking the city? What a great guy he is" Suki said sarcastically.
Nero was widely despised and routinely dispatched his opponents. Eventually, the army and Praetorian Guard mutinied, and the Senate declared him an enemy of Rome, leading to his suicide in 68 AD.
"Yep you basically abandoned your people," Suki said
The FlaviansNero left no heir. Over the following year, four men vied for the throne. It was the fourth,a general from the equestrian class called Vespasian, who triumphed in 69 AD. Vespasian worked hard during his 10-year reign, restoring the empire's finances, and erecting many important buildings, including the symbol of Rome itself, the Colosseum.
"Good.....we finally got another good emperor," Kya said
The looted treasures of the temple in Jerusalem bankrolled much of this building work. Vespasian had been the governor of Judea before becoming Emperor, and his son, Titus, made a name for himself by putting down the Jewish resistance in that province. Titus governed for only two years before his brother succeeded him in 81 AD. Domitian had an autocratic streak but seemed to have the support of both the public and the military.
"If the public and the military supports him, then they show he is a promising Emperor," Hiroshi said
Rome prospered under him during his 15-year rule. But he got on the wrong side of court officials who had him murdered.
"Seriously, he probably made an oopsy and got murdered for it?" Suki said
"Probably they mistook that as a threat," Sokka said
The Nerva-Antonine DynastyThe second century AD was an era of relative stability under the Nerva-Antonine emperors. Unusually, they were mostly adopted by their predecessors rather than being their biological heirs. They included men such as Trajan, a charismatic military commander, who expanded the empire from the Caspian Sea all the way to Scotland; Hadrian, whose famous wall formed a bulwark against marauding Scottish tribes in Britannia; and the philosopher-warrior, Marcus Aurelius. His son, Commodus, was an incompetent egomaniac who fancied himself a gladiator. He was strangled by his trainer on the orders of the Praetorian prefect in192 AD.
"Showing off a bit huh?" Mako chuckled
The Late Roman Empire
Commodus's death was the opening act in a century-long period known as the ImperialCrisis.
"Uh oh that doesn't sound good. Another Civil War?" Korra said
Twenty-nine emperors came to power through plots and violent death over five decades. In 284 AD, Diocletian, a former soldier, sought to end the chaos. He split the empire into two: he ruled the eastern portion, which was mainly Greek, and his friend, Maximian, the western part, which was Latin. They were senior emperors with the title of "Augustus".
"I bet that is a bad mistake he made," Kya said
"Especially if you got 29 emperors who are power-hungry which resulted in a violent phase," Kuvira said
"Then again the Empire got too big and decided to let them be independent nations," Korra said
Each half was further divided and governed by junior emperors or "Caesars". Thistetrarchy or "rule of four" only lasted about 30 years, but it created peace and stability.
"See I told you that would work," Korra said
Christians did not fare well under the new regime as they refused to worship Diocletian, who had styled himself the embodiment of Jupiter on Earth. Churches were torn down, sacred writings burned, and followers persecuted.
"Christians? Who are these people? Are they Romans or something like that?" Pema asked
"I'll tell you that another time" Domini said
Paradoxically, this only made Christianity stronger, and ultimately led to the abdication of both Diocletian and Maximian in 305 AD. In-fighting over who would legally succeed them ensued. Constantine, the son of the former western Caesar, emerged victoriously. Constantine the GreatOnce the ruler of the Western Empire, Constantine legalized Christianity, claiming that Christ had led him to victory over his rivals.
"I think Christianity is a type of religion," Asami said
However, he made sure not to alienate those who still followed the old religions. In the east, his counterpart, Licinius, had persecuted the sizeable Christian minority out of fears they would rise up in support of Constantine.
"Not to Alienate, I guess this guy deserved to be called Constantine the Great" Korra said
In 324 AD, Constantine and Licinius clashed in Byzantium. Constantine's win saw eastand west united under one ruler. In the years that closely followed, Christianityflourished, and many of the less savory practices of the past were banned, such as ritual sacrifices, gladiatorial games, and crucifixion as a form of execution.
"Well that sounds good and promising. I mean all those have cruel intentions"
In just six short years, a magnificent new Roman capital was established in the ancient city of Byzantium. New Rome, as it was known during Constantine's life, lay between the eastern and western edges of the empire on important trade routes. Eventually renamed Constantinople, it attracted people from across the empire in search of a better life.In time, the empire was split into east and west again.
"Again and Again," Suki said
In 476 AD, the Western Roman Empire fell after years of fending off the military and political intrigues of barbarian interlopers.
"Nooooo!" Asami said in horror "That empire is just so amazing. They created so many things"
"Eventually all nations will fall in some way. Everything must come to an end" Servus said
"That is true" Zhu Li said
The Eastern Empire continued on as the Byzantine Empire, finally collapsing under the mightof the Ottoman Turks in 1453. After almost a millennium, the Roman Empire had come toan end.
The video fades to black. Everyone was like "wow" The Romans were just an amazing thing to learn, despite lasting almost a millennia. Asami on the other hand couldn't accept the fact that the Romans fall.
"So how did the Roman fall?" Asami asked Domini
"Ooh, The fall of the Roman Empire was brutal and devastating. As I said, the Roman Empire was one of the most influential Empires of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. When Rome fell, this started the Dark Ages." Domini said
"The Dark Ages? Oh no....Now I can see why it was devastating" Asami said
"Yup knowledge was lost, scientific advancement was lost, and so many others" Servus said as he turned on the screen again to show them something
https://youtu.be/YBIO-jKuFpE
Everyone sat and watched quietly. No words can be made after watching that. They learned it was barbarians who lead the downfall of Rome. They toppled statues, burned down buildings, destroyed knowledge, and put Europe into a scientific dark age.
"Barbarians...of course, they are uncivilized fools who know nothing," Kuvira said with a hint of anger.
"They also raped innocent people," Asami said
After watching the video, everyone was shocked at how Rome fell. An Empire that was once an invincible empire, until the Barbarians found their weak spot and ended up in the Dark Ages.
"Well, that is the end of the Roman Empire and the Ancient Era. I think it's time we take a break. We'll send you back to your world and we will set up what you will react to next" Servus said
Everyone was relieved to hear that they will return to their home.
"Farwell for now you all. I hope you learned something" Domini said as he smiled
"I sure did" Korra said
Then with a snap of a finger, all of the audiences returned to their destined time and places. All the while, Servus and Domini began to setup up what they had to watch next.
WELL, THAT'S THE END OF THE ANCIENT ARC. IS THERE ANYTHING ROMAN RELATED THAT I MISSED FOR THEM TO REACT TO? IF SO LEAVE IT IN THE COMMENTS, AND I WILL ADD IT LATER.
