Ancient Civilizations Part 2 (China)

The doors wide opened showing a bright light in the background. Everyone looked in shocked to see who they were. Korra, Tenzin, Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo were more shocked to see who it was. The bright light dimmed out for a bit. The people who came into the theater room were Aang, Sokka, Suki, Toph, Katara. But there are in their prime years. At least in their 20s. Not only that the Past Avatar Kyoshi and Rangi were also present.

Korra: By the Spirirts!

Tenzin: F-Father?! Mother?!

Bumi: Hey Tenzin why do those people look like Mom and Dad?

Tenzin: Because it is Mom and Dad!

Tenzin shouted at Bumi.

Bolin: it's the past Avatar! Avatar Kyoshi and her girlfriend Rangi!

Kya: Not only that it's Auntie Suki and Uncle Sokka, Mom and Dad's companions during the hundred-year war!

Korra walked up to meet with Aang and Kyoshi.

Korra: Aang! Kyoshi! It's nice to meet you two!

Aang: Korra, it's great to see you again!

Kyoshi: Me as well!

Everyone got up to meet each other. Most importantly, Aang's children can finally meet with their father again but in their prime years. While Domini and Servus watch them, Servus was speaking to Domini.

Servus: Lord Domini, what are the next topics.

Domini: oh yes, It is China, and Greece

=====

After everyone calmed down and spoke to each other, they all went to their seats and began to listen to Domini.

Domini: Ok, so our next topic is Ancient China. After that is the Roman Empire.

Servus: Now China might interest you more because the Chinese have a similar culture as you guys have

Korra: What do you mean by that?

Servus: China takes place in East Asia. The Chinese have the same writing system as you guys have but your dialects are a bit off.  Not only that, similar clothing, similar names, music, and much more.

Domini then showed the Chinese Language.

智慧

Domini: Can you read what this text says?

Bolin: It says Wisdom

Domini: That is right. This also means Wisdom in the Chinese language called Mandarin. In China, they speak the same language as you guys do, but the dialect is very different compared to yours.

Tenzin: Amazing to see the Terran People have a similar culture to us.

Rangi: If that's the case, I'm excited to watch.

Aang: China sounds very fun to learn. If Servus says they have a similar culture to us.

Katara nodded.

Sokka: Well I'm ready to learn

Toph, on the other hand, is still blind and though she won't be able to see. But Aang is next to her and he will describe what is going on the screen. Servus offered her to cure her blindness, but she rejected. After that the video began to play

https://youtu.be/6Ne6_4mzRVE

The intro begans with the camera panning over to the Asian continent.

Narrator: Ancient China boasts the longest lasting empire in history and is coveniently divided into periods called Dynasties, which are lines of kings or emperors from a single family.

They showed the 13 Dynasties that existed on Earth. They were amazed to see how many dyansties it goen through.

Wu: Wow! China has the longest lasting empire in history? Juding by the dates, China is at least 5000 years old

Mako: Even in the Earth Kingdom, the ruling dyansty is the Hou-Ting Dyansty.

Narratoe: Chinese civilizaito nbegan along the Yellow River valley where legned claims that Yu the Great establihs the probably fictional Xia Dynasty after working relentlessl to control the river flooding which have been destroying the farmer's crops.

Korra: Legendary? But he has to be real I mean.....

Domini: Oh he was real alright, but you gotta remember, record keeping didn't began until like the 3rd Millenium BC.

Kyoshi: Man I feel bad for the farmers. They worked so hard on thoese crops but then, it got all ruined thanks to those floods.

Rangi: All thanks to this Yu the Great, he was able to maintain the flood.

Narrator: The Shang was supplanted by the Zhou Dynasty whic introduced the concept of the Mandate of Heaven to justify thier rule.

Aang: Mandate of Heaven?

Katara: Lord Domini, what is the Mandate of Heaven?

Domini: It's a Chinese political philosphy. It would established the Chinese monarch system. The Chinese believed that heaven emobides the natural order and the will of the universe. So it was a spiritual and phisophicaly concept.

Sokka: You don't say

Narrator: The concept is in some ways similar to the European divin right of kings. However it dose not confer an unconditional right to rule. Intrinsic to the mandate of heaven was the right of rebelion against an unjust ruler.

Suyin: I get it now. Every Dynasty will be a new age of China, but when they get corrupt, they believed that some type of diety will interfere with the ruler and help the people establish a new Dynasty.

Narrator: It was often invoked as a way to curtail the abuse of power and was used to explain that divine intervention based on the ruler's fairness is the rease for the dyansity rise and fall for the next 3000 years.

Then the video showed the cycle of the Mandate of Heaven.

Narrator: Much of traditional Chinese culture abd philosiphy inclduign Confucianism and Taoism developed during the troubled times that saw wars between smaller Chinese states.

Hiroshi: Even China went through a similar issue as the Sumerians, and the Egyptians have gone through.

Pema: Confucianism and Taoism?

Bumi: what are those?

Kya: are they some type of religious morals or something?

Narrator: In response to the surrounding Chaos, Confucius looked at the historical sage emperors of China and recommended family as a basis for ideal government and a more stable society.

Tenzin: oh! So Confucius is a person

Narrator: Respect of elders by their children and of husbands by their wives.

Korra: Yes! A moral that I follow!

Aang nodded at Korra

Opal: Yes, we should always respect our elders. No matter what. We can learn from them and it can help our lives.

Narrator: Generation of ancestors especially male ones, personal and governmental morality. Justice, kindness, and sincerity were values emphasized by Confucius.

Tenzin: I really like this Confucius guy! He shows good morals, and smart ideas for the young people.

Narrator: Ultimately, this system of though and behavior strongly influenced not only Chinese but the whole Asian cultural sphere until now.

People were happy to see that Confucius Morals expanded all over East Asian including China, Korea. Including Aang, Kyoshi, Katara, Sokka,  and many others.

Narrator: When Qin became the first ruler to reunify China and establish himself as China's first emperor. Although the Qin dynasty lasted only 38 years, it is so important that it gave the country its name China.

Wu: Hmm something similar to what the Earth Kingdom has done.

Narrator: Besides standardizing the writing system, the Qins were famous for massive building projects including roads of thousands of miles, the beginning of the Great Wall of China, and the largest burial complex in the world featuring thousands of life-size terracotta soldiers.

Korra: Wow!

Asami: Amazing!

Wu: The Great Wall of China?

Domini: Now this would interest you. The Great Wall of China is a wall that was built around China's borders. To keep barbarians from entering their nation.

Wu: I see! It's just like the Ba Sing Se Wall. To keep outsiders from entering the city.

Domini: Sadly, the wall was constructed by force labor

Everyone was shocked to hear that. The wall was created by forced labor.

Asami: what?!

Domini: Keep watching

Narrator: Qin was however an oppressive ruler who believed in legalism. Which is considered akin to Machiavellianism. He burned all non-legalist books, including Daoist and Confucian ones.

Domini: Not only that he was responsible for building the Great Wall of China. By using forced labor, I mean it was built by slaves, peasants, POWs, and Confucius scholars. A lot of people died making that wall. As a result, their bodies became a building block for that wall.

People were shocked and horrified to hear that Qin was just a horrible tyrant bastard who used their people to create a wall made out of stone and dirty including bodies. Asami, Kya, Rangi, and Wu had their hands over their mouths to hear this monstrosity. Even Kuvira was disgusted with Qin's motives!

Korra: That Bastard!

Aang: Why would he do such a thing?!

Tenzin: Not only that he was against Confuscianism. That man has no morals at all!

Kuvira: Although I was a dictator, I will never go far as using slave labor, and put people to work, and using their dead bodies as structures.

Narrator: He was supplanted by the less extreme and longer-lived Han Dynasty which maintained the mandate of heaven by behaving as wise and benevolent Confucians." According to Confucian scholars who were writing history.

Pema: Oh sure! After you burned those Confuscious books and using your own people as building blocks as walls!

Meelo: Daddy! That guy is a meanie!

Ikki: I want to punch that guy in the fact and teach him a lesson!

Jinora: Seriously you guys he is long dead before we were born.

Narrator: The Han set the pattern for most of CHina's history and was arguably the most important dynasty to the point that the Chinese call themselves the Han people to this day.

Domini: Actually about 90% of the Chinese population are Han Which is an ethnic group!

Narrator: Confucianism was promoted as the state religion.

Tenzi, Pema, Aang, and others were happy to hear that Confucious ideals became their state religion.

Aang: That's good to hear!

Tenzin: How wonderful!

Narrator: China became the largest state in the world along with the Roman Empire.

Asami: The Roman Empire?

Servus: Oh, your gonna enjoy Roman history and culture, but that will be another topic for another time.

Narrator: The silk trade route to Europe was established, which may have contributed to the propagation of Buddhism from India to China.

Asami: Silk Trade Route? What is that?

Servus: A route that links China and Europe together. For trading, diplomacy, and much more.

Asami was impressed that the Chinese and these Romans were able to make contact with each other and start a trading route and diplomacy.

Asami: Whoever these Roamsn are, I wanna learn about them.

Domini: Like I said another time.

Narrator: A merit-based bureaucratic system of governance was established as young men were carefully selected through difficult examinations. The Han Period was however tainted by deadly dramas involving eunuchs within the royal court.

Katara: Uh oh!

Sokka: This dosen't look good!

Toph: Although I can't see, I can think what this China might look like. if you say it's like the Earth Kingdom, then I'll definitely like to learn more.

Narrator: The rebellion of Taoist peasants called Yellow Turbans marked its gradual end, The beginning of a 400 years-long period of political chaos and rise in Taoism and Buddhism that would transform China.

Aang: Just like the Mandate of Heaven prophesized.

Narrator: The Tang Dynasty was a golden age that feature greater freedom for women, the rise of the only female ruler nad saw 8th Century China as the largest and more prosperous country in the world.

Hiroshi: Amazing! China is like the leading nation of the ancient world.

Asami nodded to her father.

Narrator: After a time of political disunity, the Song ear was a period of prosperity and technological advancement of the Chinese inventions of paper, the compass, gunpowder and printing.

Hiroshi: So they invented paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing? It's just getting better and better. China is truly amazing!

Mako: Just like the Earth Kingdom. They invented a lot of stuff.

Domini: That's quite true. China invented a lot of stuff including Toothbrush, paper money, kites, bronze, rockets, Iron Smelting, Acupuncture, umbrellas, silk, tea, clocks, and much more.

Narrator: In fact, the oldest known printed book originated in 9th Century China, hundreds of years before printing was developed in Europe.

Hiroshi: China is truly ahead of its time than anywhere else on this Earth.

Narrator: The Great Wall did not effectively keep China's great enemies, the unified Mongol tribes, from invading the country and bringing it's under foreign rule for the first time. The Mongol Dynasty of Yuan deemed the Chinese legally inferior and recruited outsiders such as Venetian merchant Marco Polo to administer the realm.

Kuvira: So China got weak after these barbarian invaders called Mongols.  They also established a new dynasty in China.

Rangi: You know that Genghis Khan guy kinda reminds me of Emperor Chin.

Kyoshi: You know your right.

Kyoshi said at her girlfriend.

Narrator: Han Chinese Rebellions led to the rise of the Ming, who were known for their porcelain and for their trade expansion to the outside world.

Kya: An Era of trade and exploring the outside world.

Narrator: The last dynasty of Qing reached its high point in the 18th Century, the gradually declined due to internal revolts, corruption, and foreign powers.

Kuvira: you see! That's what happens if you allow foreign powers to come to your country. They will take advantage of your nation, and find a way to destroy it.

Narrator: Forcing China to trade under unequal treaties.

Kuvira: what's Opium War?

Domini: Basically China and the British went to war over drugs.

People were dumbfounded. Two nations were getting mad at each other over drugs.

Korra:......what?

Asami: you gotta be kidding me?

Tenzin: So they went to war over drugs?

Some of the facepalmed.

Kyoshi: What's next their gonna start a war over a kidnapped boy?

Domini: Possible

Some of them shook their head in silence.

Narrator: Following humiliation defats to colonial empire and a revolution led by a Dr. Yat-sen in 1911, ended a 2000 year of imperial rule with the establishment of a republic.

Korra: Oh! so it became like the United Republic of Nations after 2000 years.

Narrator: Mao Zedong later proclaimed the People's Republic of China which carries strong influence from the Chinese Empire making it one of the oldest cultures that still have a presence in the modern world

Hiroshi: This Mao guy, he says that this new China carries strong influence from the Chinese Empire. Sound promising.

Domini: oh, I wouldn't have your hopes up. But that's another topic for another time.

The video ends to a fading black. Everyone stretched their arms and some yawned. Domini then asked them

Domini: So how was that?

Asami: China has a wonderful history. I can't believe Terrans have a similar culture to ours. I mean located in a nation called China.

Korra: I agree

Kuvira: I think China has a fascinating history. So many inventions and so much written history.

Tenzin: They have wonderful morals, but I truly admire Confuscious.

Wu: They have so many dynasties, In fact, the Earth Kingdom has at least 5 or 6 Dynasties, but China has 13 Dynasties that lasted over thousands of years.

Domini: Actually there was an ancient king named King Wu of Zhou.

Wu: Really? What is he like?

Domini: He was the first king of the Zhou Dynasty, and he established many federal states under is 16 younger brothers and clans allied by marriage.

Wu nodded

Domini: There was another Wu of the Han Dynasty, He set up Confucian academies throughout the country and Confucianism the state philosophy.

Tenzin was happy to hear about Emperor Wu making Confucianism as the state religion.

Kya: So what is China like today?

Domini: All I can say is it's doing better days.

Kya nodded as she was satisfied with that answer.

Suki: Even their outfits are so similar to ours.

Asami: Ok Lord Domini, Whats is our next topic?

Domini: Ancient Greece

Kyoshi: What is Greece?

Servus: A nation that resides in the Mediterranean area. There are many famous scholars, strong warriors, artists, athletes, and they also had the ideas of Democracy. Greek ideas are still used today. Not to mention they were also pagans.

Sokka: I see.

Servus: So shall we get started? The next part of histroy?
