Part 1

Prince Fajar, as he was once called, knew that the people of Avaris would not survive if the dragons were left unchecked. He traveled throughout the lands seeking the advice and counsel of those who knew the old tales. He researched everything he could so that he could find a way to bring peace to Avaris. Then one day, while in the great library, he came across an ancient book that revealed the way to obtain the power to control the dragons. Knowing how valuable the book was, he stole it.

He spent months engrossed in the pages of the book trying to verify that all the information it contained was accurate before he could put his plan in motion. He traveled to the places described within the book and found the lairs of the five great dragons of Avaris. With the knowledge of the book in his hands, he now had the key to protecting the people of Avaris. But was he strong enough to do what had to be done?

He gathered his courage and traveled to the Caves of Kalnas; the lair of Oro the Air Dragon. There he would put his plan in motion and finally fulfill the quest he had embarked on so long ago. He would obtain the power to subdue the dragons and save the people of Avaris.

He removed his sword from its scabbard and entered the caves. He cautiously approached the chamber where Oro resided, making sure that he was downwind of the slumbering dragon. He raised the sword and stabbed deep into the breast of the dragon piercing the heart that beat within.

The dragon awoke at the shock of being stabbed. He looked furiously for his attacker and found himself starring in the eyes of the panicked prince.

“To think I would be slain by such a young pup” The old dragon spoke still struggling to hold on to life that was slowly fading from him. “Tell me Young One, why have you done this?”

“Forgive me honorable Dragon Oro, but you and your kin have tormented these lands for many years. My people are starving and will not survive much longer should you be allowed to continue. I need the power that resides in your blood to save my people.”

“I see... The power within my blood. And how have you come to learn of this?”

Prince Fajar reached in his sack and pulled the book from its depths. “From this” he replied as he held it out for the dragon to see. “The book of Galia.”

“That book contains many truths about the dragons of this world, but... there is much more to us then what is written within those pages, Young One.”

“What do you mean?” The Prince asked earnestly. “What else is there?”

“You will know soon enough... for, from the moment my blood enters your body, you will be bound to the fate we dragons share.” The great dragon struggled tremendously and then collapsed upon the ground before the young man. He looked the Prince in the eye one last time and with his dying breath said “Protect... all we... hold dear... Promise me... Young One... Prom... ise...”

The young prince starred at the body of the dragon for quite some time after it spoke its final words. What fate do the dragons share? What does he want me to protect? What should I do?

He approached the dragon's body and removed his sword from its breast. Then he cupped his hands and filled them will the blood flowing from the open wound. Slowly he raised his blood filled hands to his lips and drank the thick dark red liquid.

Suddenly, he collapsed to the ground with his hands clutched to his head screaming in agony. His body felt as though it was tearing itself apart. Two large black scaly wings burst from his back, his eyes transformed from light brown to pitch black and his hair drained of all color becoming pure white.

When the pain had subsided, he slowly rose and looked back at the dragon's lifeless body. He now understood what Oro had meant when he said that he would be bound to the dragon's fate. The prince not only obtained the power to control the dragons, but he gained all the knowledge that Oro had possessed. He gathered all his belongings, except the book of Galia, and headed home.

Once he reached the cave's entrance, he spread his new wings for the first time and took flight. He arrived in his kingdom in a fraction of the time it took him to reach the Caves of Kalnas. As he approached, the people of the kingdom fled in fear for a dragon was approaching.

He landed in the courtyard of the castle calling out to his subjects. “Be not afraid good people of the Kingdom of Oro. It is I, Prince Fajar, returning home after so long.”

The King, hearing the words the so called dragon had spoke, made his way to the courtyard to greet his son. Despite his advisors' objections, he flung open the doors to the castle, descended the stairs and embraced his son. “Welcome home, my boy! Thank goodness you are alive!” he wept.

The Prince's fiancé stood in the doorway with tears in her eyes as the people of the kingdom flocked to the courtyard. They all welcomed the Prince home and held a feast in his honor. At the banquet many people pleaded with the Prince to share his story and tell of how his appearance came to change.

“I'm afraid that my story is nothing special. My quest was to find a way to save the people of Avaris from suffering the constant threat of an attack from the dragons which have tormented us for generations. I have returned today, because I have finally fulfilled that quest. My appearance is proof of this. The people of Avaris shall be able to rest peacefully knowing they are safe from harm.”

The King stood and raised his glass. “My son has finally returned to us. Let us celebrate this day! Let it be known that my son has returned triumphant in his quest to subdue the dragons. From this day forth, he will be known as The Dragon King.”

The people cheered and rejoiced in the prince's return. All except for the council advisors who now feared him, because he now possessed a great power they knew nothing of.
