Chapter 2
Autumn peered out of the hole she was hiding in and looked around the den. All the wolves were gone, but a chill went up her spine as she noticed the stillness of the den.
She scrambled out. The den was filled with the scent of blood. "Mama?" Autumn squeaked. There was no answer. "Papa?" Still no response. She crept closer to the center of the den. Two lumps of ginger orange fur lay there, each a few feet away from each other.
Autumn scrambled over to her mother. "Mama!" she cried. Her mother's eyes were closed and she did not respond to Autumn's cry. Autumn nudged her with her paw, but nothing happened. Tears started to well up in her eyes.
She bounded over to her father. "Papa!" She prodded him with her tiny paw, but he didn't move either. His glazed eyes stared at nothing. She prodded him again. "Papa!" Still nothing happened. She started cry. She had just been in a little bicker with her mother, and she didn't get the chance to apologize.
Autumn curled up next to her dead father and cried herself to sleep.
