Chapter 12
"Autumn! Wake up! Autumn!"
Autumn kept screaming. She waved her paws in the air, trying to grab something invisible. She was still dreaming.
"Autumn!" Ursula said again. She shook Autumn with her huge bear paws.
Autumn's eyes fluttered open and she stopped screaming. She sat up, panting.
"Are you okay?" Ursula asked.
"Yeah, never better," Autumn replied uncertainly.
"You want to eat something?" Ursula asked, trying to Autumn to calm down.
Autumn shook her head. "No. I think I'll just take a little walk by myself, try to get myself to calm down."
"Alright. If you say so." Ursula turned and curled back up in her nest and closed her eyes as Autumn made her way out if the den.
The sunlight greeted Autumn as she took in the scents of the forest. Winter was coming, and Autumn wasn't too excited for it. She hated the cold, and every winter, the bears would go into hibernation, leaving Autumn on her own for a while in the den. She would hunt for herself and have no one to talk to except for a few birds around the forest.
She remembered the first time she had seen Grizelda and the cubs go into hibernation. She thought it was very strange.
"We will sleep for all of winter. We won't wake up for a while," Grizelda had said.
"So you're going to die and then come back to life?" was Autumn's response.
"No. It's more like going to sleep for a while," Grizelda said chuckling.
Autumn padded through the forest as she remembered the memory.
Her memory was interrupted by a rustling in a bramble bush nearby. A mouse was scurrying over to an acorn by the bush.
Autumn dropped into a hunting crouch and stalked forward. Then she pounced and killed the mouse with bite. She then sat down and started to eat.
The juices of the freshly caught meat made her tongue tingle delightedly. The meat tasted so good.
There was another rustling behind her. Autumn pricked her ears stood up. She turned towards the sound. There was two glowing, amber eyes staring at her.
Those eyes are from my dream, she thought.
Suddenly, the creature jumped at her and pinned her to the ground. It was snarling, saliva dripping from its jaw.
"Scarlet?!" Autumn said stunned. Scarlet wolf was on top of her.
"Well, if it isn't the little kit I could've killed a year ago. Your species is a disgrace to the world, and you are the last one! I made a huge mistake sending those wolves to get you."
Autumn squirmed under her grip, but she couldn't get away.
"You know what I did to those wolves? I killed them. And now, I will kill you, the same way I killed them."
She snarled and aimed for a death bite. But it never came.
An orange creature knocked the wolf off of Autumn and wrestled with Scarlet. Autumn scrambled to her paws and watched.
Scarlet was losing the fight. The creature pinned her down and snarled in her face, "Never come here again! Understand me?!"
Scarlet was bewildered, but not because she lost the battle. "How? There are more of you? This can't be true!"
"DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!" the creature snarled again.
"Yes yes! Alright!"
The creature allowed Scarlet to get up. Before she walked away, she turned to Autumn and said, "I will kill you. And you too." She gestured to the other creature. Then she stalked off.
"Are you okay?"
Autumn looked at the creature. it looked, almost like her: orange ginger fur, long tail, pointy ears and-wings! He had wings! Only his wings were green leaves and his eyes matched the color of his wings.
They looked at each other. "Are you-"
"-an Atorina?" The creature took the words right out of Autumn's mouth. "Yes. I am."
"I thought I was the last one," Autumn said stunned.
"Me too," he replied. "What's your name?"
"Autumn."
"I'm Fall."
Interesting name. They both had the name of a season.
"But Autumn is a much nicer name," Fall said.
"So, I'll see you around then?" Autumn said.
"Sure. Nice meeting you, Autumn," Fall said. He then flapped his leafy wings and flew above the trees.
Autumn's heart had stopped and her paws tingled with excitement. She didn't know what to make of this meeting.
