Spent Summers

The journey's end has come at last

I travelled far, and I travelled wide

These aching bones and weary heart

Beg to be finally released from duty.

My bent back against this old sentinel

I drink in the boundless benevolence

Of the eternally spreading blue skies

Golden yellow hues, cloudless at noon.

I possess a lot of stories yet to be told

The lifeblood flowing through my veins

My skin is a thing of wrinkles and scars

Obscuring a treasure trove of experience

Let me rest among this autumn grass

Before my final moment comes to pass

And then I will become one with night

Forever abandoning the brilliant light.

White and black always tend to mingle

When you have lived as long as I have

Everything is seemingly tinged in gray

Dichotomies cease to hold any sway.

It was a fruitful life filled with wonder

Full of fun for as long as it has lasted

I basked in the glory of the bright sun

And sighed longingly under the stars

All good things must come to an end

And it is time for my sun to finally set

The moon turns away its doleful face

Farewell smiles undercut with sorrow

It surely had its various ups and downs

But it was an epic journey unparalleled

And if I am given another chance at this

No amendments, I will do it all over again.
