James' description of Vedica while he snaps the photos is captivating; I felt drawn to her as if I were in his place. Then in the next chapter as she argues her case to keep the cat, I burst out laughing... you know which bit of dialogue I'm talking about; point being, the reader is taken through varied emotions and reactions. We get a feel for the characters without it being dumped, the dialogue and scene building feels real. All of this makes it a very enjoyable read. I am digging hard to find anything to complain about... some incorrect words here and there, and the blurb had me sort of confused for a second because it mentions James 'helping' her find the photographer. I wasn't sure about the title but after meeting the characters it seems fitting.

I love the contrast of human cruelty and compassion throughout the story. There are parts where a great amount of detail is added but other places where I would have liked to see similar or more attention. Overall it is very well written and really hits during scenes of bullying, and the parents' fighting. The friendship and understanding builds nicely and at a natural pace. It was very enjoyable.

I wasn't sure at the start about the parents getting married the day they move in, but then we meet them and... yeah, sort of fits :/. I think the story captures life in a pandemic lockdown very well along with the friction between the ex-friends. I like that they each seem to have their own version of why they parted but it sneaks out, so we aren't really sure of the truth, just yet. The switch to the game characters is excellent, believable, and has a real feel of the characters being tossed into the game and figuring out their role, especially Nyx. I think I might read more.
